Been using Inventor unprofessionally since the 2012 version, great to finally see a dark mode!

It's nice to have new features

Sheet formats are the primary reason most people should ditch multiple template files. You can set different borders and title blocks on them as well.

Hi Neil, Very nice video! A few more things worth highlighting: 1. Remove Excel.exe dependency in PosRep, iPart/iAssembly, and Parameter linking workflows; Excel.exe is only needed when you want to create or edit a table within Excel. You no longer need to have Excel.exe installed in order to run Inventor. 2. Linear diameter dimension (the ability to dimension the diameter of a cylindrical cross section). 3. Rotate dimension (the ability to change aligned dimension direction). 4. Shaded view of reference components. 5. Shaded views honor model lighting style (enabled by a registry key for now; to be enabled in coming updates).

My engineering class was a joke and the teacher was hired last minute so he did not know much about Inventor. Now that I am out of school he has assigned multiple projects that he has not even covered. Thank you for saving my ass and providing amazing and hilarious commentary along the way!!

Good intro to 2021....The Eclipse theme will go down well, but all dialog boxes need to follow the "Dark" theme. Thanks for your efforts.

I personally skipped 2020 (stayed at 2019) as there wasn't much change apart from GUI, yet again 2021 Dark mode is such a big change that I'm hopping over as soon as it's available :)

tips from a pro: if you handle a lot of drawings, there is a possibility to change the background color of the drawing - so the white doesnt hit the eyes so hard.

Sheet formats have been in Inventor for ages. Measure in drawings was introduced several releases ago, then removed when the measure tool was revamped. They have reintroduced measure in drawings in the 2021 release.

Good job, thanks. But i really like to see an upgrade on left browser panel, witch makes the background transparent, like in fusion 360. Why they don't do it?? It's not like they don't know how!! So what's the delay??? It bugs me. ❤

a things that is too need for inventor is, add or remove list in every dialog box features for selecting face or edge same as solid work.... when we chose to mistake a face we must close window of feature or remove evry selection...... is it true? what do you think?

Installed it this morning, and now need to think when to switch and migrate Vault and so on. Sheet formats and window select for bodies are good. Sad that face command still doesn't have new selection method like extrude. As I mostly run white background for good pictures now need to rethink that in dark mode. Got update to subscription now need to go read the all the small things, would like a link for that as google doesn' seem to help me with it.

The drawing and the sheet metal to me are the most useful improvements. Love the dark theme beginning. What I'm interested in is drawing annotation automation. There is a lot of tedious and time consuming shit detailing drawing that would could definitely be automated l like the internal project number, the company name, the stock material, views like that are expressed here. I feel like I do the same things over and over again with drawings.

Sheet format is in Inventor for as long as I can remember. More then 5 years for sure

In 2020 a dark-theme for engineers with a >27inch monitor is a must have! White is a disaster for your eye's.

10:30... yeah we do this "trick" since Inv2016 with separate IDW template. Having ALL IN ONE template might be confusing and rise the file size. Tiny trinket in Open window.

Could be interested to compared opening files on Inventor 2010, 2015 and then on 2020 o 2021, to check if the accumulative updates on performance makes some difference, maybe we don't notice from year to year, but if don't change in 5 years, then there is no real improvement on performance.

i could tell you from a 2013 to 2019 data migration that inventor still can handel its old .ipt and .iam files. idk about the newer versions, but their basic file data structur does not change dramatically - newer versions just had added information in the file.

It's still first on my mind.

Isn’t the file system still based on explorer so if you apply a windows dark theme would that fix it?

I hope Autodesk will include a more powerful/customizable cfd simulator that is able to handle thermodynamics problems better. The only reason my company still uses solidworms is for the more powerful simulation software. If Inventor sim improves I'd switch in a heartbeat.

I love the Partial Eclipse theme colour. Though the boxes not being changed is disappointing. I HATE pitch black dark themes, I find they're just as hard on the eye's because the contrast difference is still about the same.

I don't get why when the updated thing like the Frame generator that they take away functionality, 1 dated box is still quicker to use that having to hit different menus. Even though the new way looks cooler....

Niel, don't forget the new ilogic improvements for drawing dimensions :-). it's not in the what's new documented, but it's a great improvement for automation.

There's a lot of good stuff in the update the drawing sheet format is a huge deal, dark theme maybe not so much I prefer the presentation

What happened to the part configuration change (or whatever the heck it was to be called)? I recall parts were going to be able to get "configurations" just like in solidworks where you could have holes removed (for example) when you dont need to see them in a higher assembly, machining, etc? I was so stoked when I heard about that months ago.

Dude, the Inventor Revit link is so good for our work! We have to build stuff that fit into Revit models so we often have to ask for new updates of the Revit model, import and replace it... This feature could save us so much time and trouble... PS. please make your video a bit longer next time, so that the end music has his right to finish instead of being cut off...

It's helpful for sure. But does updating the RVT model kill the existing constraints and relationships already placed against the previous version? Or do you just use the RVT file as a link rather than an inserted component? If the RVT is client-supplied, how do you maintain the already applied constraints, I mean.

Does the 2021 is available on the autodesk site?

They’re usually a bit slow to update their trial downloads but it won’t be long if it isn’t there now

Cheers for the review. We're on 2019, we don't generally update every year as its a pain. Every other year there are probably enough improvements to warrant it. I don't understand why they cannot move to a rolling update, the whole installation and uninstall process is just so dated.

I'm beginning to align with that thought process now, it's becoming incredibly fatiguing to constantly test and deploy new versions (I'm doing it right this second). The problem is that would require a constant online Fusion 360-style connection which isn't compatible with a lot of their larger clients. But I've personally hit the wall now with annual platform migrations, both Inventor & Vault.

Patiently waiting for a native thread modeler

Perhaps the lack of a dark theme for the start page, is an indication that’s gonna get a revamp like the properties panels 🤔

The other thing people need to remember is the release cycle for Inventor is quarterly now. Not annual. Lots of features, some even quite big get released through the year.

Is that actually documented though? When you subscribe, is there a contractual guarantee that there'll be subsequent point updates throughout the year...? Obviously they happen but the big tock release is what people expect to see where their money is going, rightly or wrongly, I think that'll always be the case for as long as a product increments each year with a year suffix like 2021 etc

Looks like I will stick with 2013 for one more year... at least.

Standard in SolidWorks since 2008. Inventor is a decade behind SW in almost every aspect of the software and for two names that are supposed "competitors" in the sector, Inventor really does fail to deliver in so many ways. I use both pretty much daily and cant see how Autodesk are able to keep their product competitive other than companies implementing it on the back of established AutoCAD installations. You really are doing a disservice to your company by specifying IV as your chosen solids modeller.

I'm assuming that the killer feature that you said you couldn't mention was Level of Detail for Parts forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/level-of-detail-for-parts/idi-p/3822718 which had been accepted and was reported to be in the 2021 beta. I'm bitterly disappointed that it didn't make the cutoff, it's such a basic feature for anyone doing multi-step manufacturing processes (e.g. pre-machine, weld, final machine) and doing it with derived parts is very clumsy. I'm really hoping that it appears in a mid-year update, and I don't have to wait another year for it. Everything else in 2021 is just cosmetic compared to this.

I'm not installing this until we're free of all this other [virus] stuff. 2020 works well, I'm in the middle of a big project and sticking with 2020 until summer...although I like the dark theme...
