I knew which was which, but I preferred the Melodyne it just has that natural tone that i like

agreed. I use melodyne more of a pitch correcting feature, as in, you sing a C but it's just a bit lower than it's supposed, then I fix it. My pitch fixes don't even reach 1/2 step. Which means you have to sing properly in order to work with me for vocals. I also use it for guitars since sometimes they're a bit out of tune in just one string and I make it perfect

Yep melodyne sounds natural

I definitely preferred melodyne to auto tune. I think that the 2nd clip sounded more like synth, especially that transition. Melodyne gives you a certain control over the vocals that auto tune just don't. Auto tune is good if something needs to be done quick or to get that "poppy" sound that everybody seems to enjoy nowdays. Melodyne requires more patience but the results are always more worth it and the sound is way more natural as long you don't do anything super extreme. Sometimes I've combined them to get a super clean sound for overproduced stuff. Then I start with melodyne and add auto tune right after to really get every sylleble corrected and to get that smooth "poppy" effect without having that annoying T-Pain sound because all the notes are pretty much already corrected so you can get away with more retune speed etc.

The only reason people who like pop music prefer Auto Tune is because of the cliché "repetition legitimizes". The mass populace are just inundated with repetition of Auto Tuned everything that is almost devoid of dynamics and emotion

Thanks much, Daniel! The line tool is definitely bad ass! I usually work exclusively in Melodyne for manual edits, but making these last 2 videos has me wondering if I should return to Auto-Tune. 🤔🤔🤔

I guess the bottom line is that it’s gonna be personal. I started with AutoTune in 1997, so I know it really well. With that said, Melodyne is fantastic for beginners, and nothing can beat it for tuning polyphonic material.

I guess at the end of the day it all boils down to what you prefer as a musician in terms of sound, or the music genre? Like example for me I dont do rap, I sing mostly ballads or love songs so I prefer to really sound more natural than robotic.

Awesome! Happy to help. What kind of production are you trying to achieve with your vocal tuning? I think that’s the biggest thing to figure out in deciding melodyne or autotune. Second would be workflow.

great videos. I think the cliffhanger comparison was unfair though. It seemed to audibly weight workflow considerations, not really compare sound considerations. That was later explained so it's all still good.

Thanks much! At the end of the day, they are both incredible processors. It’s hard to simply pick one over the other. Hopefully sharing my experiences will help others get a better idea.

You totally sold me on autotune, great video. The sustain especially to me is apparent. Do you think that part of the difference could be which of the two programs you're more comfortable working with? Just as a devil's advocate thought.

Yes, your experience with one or the other definitely factors in. I used to be 100% team autotune. I grew into Melodyne over time. And now I’m primarily Melodyne, but as I’ve said, both have strengths. There are plenty of times I will use each to get the best of both worlds. Sometimes it’s just easier to “draw” tuning in Auto-Tune for a specific inflection or vibrato. Sometimes Melodyne is more transparent. It depends. Try both, but still strive to learn one (if not both) in depth. “It’s the ear, not the gear”. They both “tune vocals”.

I have used both. In my opinion Melodyne is better for a natural sound while Auto-tune is better if you are looking for an obvious pitch correction or effect sound. More robotic. People I have recorded usually prefer the more natural sound than the obvious sound of a pitch correction. It's just a matter of opinion. Kind of old school thinking in that I am looking to smooth out the vocalists pitch issues without adding any apparent artifact. I am usually looking to to make the vocal sound better rather than different.

They both will work. Auto-Tune if you want to be a little lazier and just use Auto mode for that classic sound. Melodyne if you want to be very hands on and detailed. Though, you CAN be detailed in Auto-Tune graph mode - I prefer Melodyne for most manual tuning.

I use melodyne so I could hear that #1 used it and I also predicted people would think #2 was better because it has more mathematically rational note transitions. I think melodyne is WAY better for a cappella and acoustics, little better of everything else. It’s easier to control, but you need to ask yourself if you like to micromanage things - melodyne is great for that. The only exception is autotune has more artifacts which sound more edited - so EDM and some pop will sound more crystalline with autotune.

Roy Thompson Audio cool I’ll watch. Also, I don’t mean to even say melodyne has no artifacts, because it does but they just sound more like manipulations in the harmonic series while waves and autotune actually sound like square metallic sounds. Nice channel

@@danielcha9945 for me, I use it mostly just to fix little notes. Not even reaching a half step. Even harmonies, I prefer to keep it as natural as possible and then just fix it. So basically, I need good takes and good vocals out of the bat. My changes are almost seamless since I pick up just a bit out of tune and not a whole lot

Yep. Like the lines, not the blobs.

if you were to turn down the amount the tuner is working, couldn't you still get a good natural sound from a strong vocal performance?

That is very cool. Would love some ARA integration with pro tools...maybe one day!

Example 1 sounded much more natural to me. Example 2 sounded effected.

I like 1 ...2 sounds too robotic on the intervals...if you are a pop singer or rapper okay i see why

MELODYNE WHY!!! Cause you can go to any note! Shrink the work zone. And do vocal climbs or drops or odd lines.

I was wrong.

Granted this video is a year and a half old but you clearly didn't realize or was too lazy to use the tools in Melodyne 4. M4 did everything you were complaining about but not automatically, which is exactly why most professionals I've worked with like Melodyne rather than AutoTune. I'm not picking on you but the video seems clearly biased toward you wanting to have everything done for you with a simple push of a button. I can't help but wonder if you play an instrument or if you just use loops to "create" music (that someone else played for you).
