For many years, automotive HVAC or climate control systems, were vacuum based, when it came to all the air flap actuators. The vacuum source was the engine vacuum itself, and a vacuum reservoir was also used. Other manufacturers, like Mercedes Benz, used a dedicated vacuum pump to generate the required vacuum, used to operate the air flaps. Regardless of where the vacuum comes from, we will now discuss this system in depth.
The main purpose of using vacuum in the car's HVAC system is for flap door actuation. The newer way to do the actuation of the flap doors, is through electrical power, or using motors. Why was vacuum abandoned for the most part? The answer is due to control. Electric actuators afford a wider range of control. Also, the vacuum actuator technology exposed here is more costly to implement.
There are three basic components to any vacuum HVAC actuation control system. These are, a vacuum source, either engine or pump, the vacuum diaphragm actuators, and the ...

Pros to this system is they hardly ever fail you can have a 20 year old car and all the blend doors will still redirect air just like it did when it rolled off the assembly line. All the electric controlled blend door fail all the time or get stuck and too fix them you gotta pull the entire dash out.

2001 Ford Escort under wide open throttle will lose air flow from Center vents, I have checks all the vacuum hoses at the engine to the EGR valve into the AC switchover valve, I am unable to find a vacuum Reservoir that's exactly what my car is doing it's not holding vacuum.. this is a very good video thanks hoping I can find the reservoir valve or it never had one I bought this at a used car lot..Wade.. does anybody know where the reservoir valve is at?.. I have open the glove box Tray all the way to the down position I still can't find that Reservoir..

Great video. My HVAC system in my 98 Cherokee seems to all be working except for the mode controls. I need to check the reservoir and all the connections. However, there’s nothing coming out of the vents besides the defrost (which is fail safe of course) and maybe a little bit of air that creeps through closed vents, I wonder if the issue’s on the cab side of the firewall.

How do you restore vacuum to the stupid reserve box so it won't switch from vent to defrost when driving. I disconnected the box once and I heard it loose the vacuum but since it will not regain and hold a vacuum.
Where do you buy assist vacuum pump gasket (Hella brand) does someone know.

very nice, Scenario: You just purchased a vehicle from 1997. The previous owner tells you no information regarding the AC system. You turn it on and no air blows out? What do you do? First Check wiring (relays and fuses) Second Check Vacuum Lines and Vacuum Canister Third hook up a manifold gauge and verify refrigerant levels. I consider those your top 3 culprits, from there it could be the blend doors, actuator, ac switch disconnected, etc.

Does anyone here know where I can find vacuum line replacements? I have a 2000 class A RV with a 454 Chevy that still uses the old vacuum system for the flap doors in the AC system. Unfortunately, some of the hoses/lines have not aged well and are falling apart. I have looked everywhere for replacements. Any ideas?

Vacuum lines? They're sold in feet or rolls. I don't quite understand your question. If you want ready made vacuum circuit as in the original, probably not. You'll have to replace them one by one.

Yes, that is what happens if you loose vacuum. That's an easy fix. Look for the vacuum leak. Follow the vacuum hose from the intake.
Just to contribute to the discussion and those looking for solutions. My 99 E150 blend door problem turned out to be the dash mounted round temperature switch knob itself was broken where the female plastic hole on the back gripped and turned the male control cable mounted inside the control panel. in other words the temp knob was broken even though it turned... unusual problem and resolution for sure but I thought worth mentioning.

2006 ford explorer has no vacuum to heater control valve. Vac. source is good. The black hose has vac. The gray hose does not.The reservoir has and holds vac. All I get is very hot air. The A/C is good. The blend actuator is good. The manual HVAC control unit is good. I need to check the temperature blend door. However, that does not answer why the heater control valve is not getting vacuum. Otherwise everything else works fine. no check engine light on. no vac. leaks detected.

Diesels have a separate vacuum pump. They also use service electric for AC controls.
