'Auto HDR' for PC? The Witcher 3, Control + More - Tested in HDR with Special K Mod!

Ойындар

What if you existing library of SDR-only PC games could render in HDR? That's what Kaldaien's new Special K mod upgrade can potentially deliver for a range of games with no high dynamic range support. In this special KZread HDR video, Alex Battaglia takes a look at the mod and how effective it is across a bunch of games.

    HDR is such a mess. When it looks good, IT LOOKS GOOD but it's so hard to get that. So many panels don't have the brightness or have far to few dimming zones or none at all. Heck there are so many cheap monitors/TV's that advertise HDR but meet literally no standards for HDR, they just accept HDR signals. Even some of the vesa standards are suspect. HDR 400 for instance is barely worth turning on in most cases and the TV/monitor your buying is probably bad for HDR in a bunch of other ways if it's using HDR 400. For the average person not buying a super high end display with 10 bit HDR 800, or higher, you are just going to be left with the impression HDR is all hype when it's really not. Good HDR is sadly only available on expensive stuff and I feel like before it trickles down people are going to have decided it's crap because they've only ever seen bad HDR.

    I agree. Imo it should be treated as false advertising if the panel's nits are sub 1000. People don't realise how significant HDR is on a proper display.

    I've found when tweaking this mod on my LG CX that you want to find like a reference point in the image, such as the sun. If whatever game you're playing doesn't have a sun to look at, play around with the heatmap and brightness settings until you find some element in the scene that's hitting max luminance like say 1000nits. Once you've done that, lower the max brightness until the sun or whatever bright spot you've found contrasts quite well against the surrounding visual elements, but it's still quite bright. I've found by doing that it creates a fairly balanced image.

I was there when the strength of windows failed, that the memory leakism, UI collapsing, multi explorer.exe drunken blur effect, single thread maxing out for no listable reason in task manager..... I was there when the greed of x86 licensing faltered via SSE3 roads to emulation, and the days of system and compressed memory being interminable. Alex, thanks for the great work as always. This is very informative. :D I wonder if you've had any personal experiences playing SDR games on a Sony Bravia such as x950g or x950h, with X-tended Dynamic Range enabled. This is an algorithm developed by Sony to enhance the contrast of image by 3 times, so it makes your SDR games look like HDR ones. I'd say the result is very splendid. The only difference noticable between it and real HDR to my eyes is that it lacks the fine control of light sources in real HDR, but this is due to the way that lights rendered in SDR are coded to have a larger bloom area, not the TV's problem. I'd say some of the dark areas could lack visibility of details compared to HDR, but still it's only a bit worse imo. And I wonder how the Special K Mod compares to Sony's X-tended Dynamic Range in terms of effects?

    Not familiar with the situation. I fiddled w mine the first time for setup and everything just looks fucking juicy every time. It's important to only use 1 screen at a time (using the windows menu to switch between screens in "show only" type) and to restart after making the adjustment... This to make sure the native res is booted into. Little shit imo.

    @@MrGencyExit64 But color gamut has to do with the monitor specification itself rather than HDR. Color precision is a toss up too, especially when calibration exists, and also some games are overly exaggerated and much less "precise" looking in HDR mode anyway. Finally, luminance not an issue if you play in a dark room or completely in the dark. The only thing I did suspect was increased banding when faking HDR, but then again, banding shouldn't be an issue for most scenes anyway (unless single RGB values are used or the scene is extremely dark). Other than that, the only thing left with HDR is the better contrast ratio with good local dimming displays, but even that gets beaten if you own an OLED.

    Isn't this a little like making a copy of a copy and fiddle with the levels in-between? I mean, many games are using HDR/PBR internally and then have a tonemapper (often filmic or unrealic) down to SDR before sending it to the screen buffer. Games with built in HDR support can convert the internal HDR to HDR10, scRGB, etc. and then bypass the tonemapper before sending it to the screen buffer. I assume that this solution is doing some kind of reverse-tonemapping (like with HDR MSAA) to pull things back up to HDR levels. Wouldn't that mean that information (luminance resolution) is lost and banding will occur?

  • @ArcadiaP

    This is also one of the larger concerns in attempting to autoHDR games for precisely the reason you stated, they already employ an HDR to SDR tonemap. AutoHDR will be at its best if such a system could be disabled, but I don't think that's easily feasible and may provide other issues.

  • @meatsafemurderer7743

    @meatsafemurderer7743

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ArcadiaP It's possible. ENB grabs the untonemapped HDR buffers. The problem? You can't really do that in a generic one-size fits all fashion. It would need to be done on a per-game basis. Special-K could in theory do this, 3DMigoto can let you access the HDR information...of course with 3DMigoto you still need to perform quantization (and thus tonemapping to SDR) before output but in theory you could retain much of the color correction and such that is often done in that final post processing shader (depends on whether it's done before/after tonemapping) while outputting to a HDR buffer instead. Again, it'd be per-game and would require a level of shader programming knowledge that most people just don't have...but it *is* doable.

    You're thinking of the Xbox implementation. Mine actually increases the precision and range of the intermediate render targets (8-bit, 10-bit and 11-bit can all be promoted to 16-bit per color and allowed to go beyond the 1.0 brightness limit of SDR / fixed-point render targets), Microsoft's just takes the final image and does funny AI stuff to it :P AI can produce interesting results, but cannot create detail where none existed. Additionally, in a handful of games, I can control the luminance of the game scene and the HUD independently. That's not a general feature at the moment, but the tools to find the game's UI shaders are built-in to Special K. It's just kind of time consuming :-\ Still, a million times more than what Xbox does :)
