Author Salman Rushdie: "Truth Is a Battle...Maybe Never More So Than Now" | Amanpour and Company

Salman Rushdie is no stranger to attacks on freedom of speech. In 1989, he was the subject of a fatwā from Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, who deemed Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses" blasphemous against Islam. Over 30 years later, the threat has receded and Rushdie is releasing a new collection of essays. He speaks with Walter Isaacson about the importance of storytelling and the dangers of cancel culture.

Basking in willful ignorance doesn't require reflection, rather, it's a form of conformity or compliance. Common sense can be colloquial and/or accepting some archaic "wives' tales," tho, doesn't resist tests for validity, as its only value is consistency over time. The "uncommon sense" that results from questioning tradition, and evaluating the intent and basis for "truths" that are held up as concepts to fight for, is crucial, and can't be limited to academia, if society, much less democracy, and freedom of ideas, faiths and perspectives, are to survive the onslaught of untruths as motivation. Fables are endearing, but we've zero need for contemporary, contrived fairy tales. There's been a ton of backlash to celebration of Juneteenth being enacted as National Holiday, as those who want the truth of their history as victims of melanin-based condemnation and oppression know a gratuitous concession when confronted with such. The theme is not unlike Indian colonization and its consequece, save the fact that those subjugated [mostly, by descendants of Empire-obsessed Brits] were abducted en masse from their homeland to be enslaved in a land that wasn't even a nation, by folks who claimed to have fled to pursue religious freedom, indicts all Christians to be in solidarity, turning the tide of injustice, and demonstrating the ideals and practices of their Savior. Yet, in modern US, we endure the jarring cognitive dissidence of "Pro-life" gun-toting "believers" who resist overhaul of the whitewashed history, and perpetuate prejudice, their racial animus, and xenophobia, having been stoked to consolidate intransigent denial of not just Climate crisis, but the necessity to realize "Justice for all ." Ignorance embraced = truth denied. Unsustainable and devoid of divinity.

What a pleasure to hear a writer speak with such clarity and forthrightness. If freedom of speech is a value we hold dear, then agreement is irrelevant. I agree that protection of people is most important. Limiting freedom of speech is more dangerous than allowing wide differences, including versions of reality that sound crazy. We CAN learn how to relate to people without having to agree on what is true.

I grew up looking up at The Satanic Verses on my parents' bookshelf with awe. They'd told me about this giant of democracy, this hero of freedom of speech, so many times that he became an almost mythical figure to me. But here he is, in the flesh, very real & speaking truths that are just as urgent today. We are very lucky to have his wisdom at this pivotal point in history.

The freedom to speak a lie is precious ONLY when the truth can freely rebuke the lie. If the hearer of the lie is KEPT in any way from the introduction of the truth, it is very dangerous. While I don't have the answers to this paradoxical dilemma, if something isn't done in America to counteract the “protection” from factual information that these “freedom of speech” abusers seem to be accomplishing, we will lose our freedom! Sadly, I hear nothing about hearing of truth, except for when it is incidentally mentioned as pertaining to the freedom of speech, yet BOTH rights MUST always dwell together. This is the MOST important issue to address in the 21st century!

I can only recommend everyone to read Salman Rushdie's autobiography. If today an unfortunately very large faction of the political left is rightly accused of behaving opportunistically in the face of the danger of identitarian Islamist movements: When Rushdie was under the protection of the British police for too long, it was Prince Charles who complained that money was being spent on an 'unproductive' person. And Conservative backbenchers tried to endear themselves to a strong faction of England's Muslim communities by attacking police protection for Rushdie. As members of Western states, we have fewer problems with "left" and "right" than with backbone and conscience.

I agree with a lot of Rushdie's ideas, but not with calling someone an idiot because of what they say. When having a discussion, just present your point of view and the evidence to back it up. Good ideas will sparkle like pearls and bad ones will fade away. Attacking someone else, or their point of view, just ends the sharing of ideas, or makes people defensive. The main idea of discussion is to get many ideas on the table, so the best ones are shared instead of staying hidden because someone is afraid to present them.

Satirical Magical Realist piece regarding Salman Rushdie incident.... This is what my fellow Muslims should do when someone insults our great Nabi (SAW)? I believe that when someone insults our Nabi (SAW) it is nothing but a test from Allah'tala. Allah is testing us to ensure we maintain our composure, our restraint, our patience, our tolerance against those who degrade the image of our beloved Prophet (SAW). Whenever we detect an insult, we should approach those who have no respect for our Nabi (SAW) and embrace them closely and warmly with compassion and humility. We must do this to show how amazing Islam is - in that we persevere in the face of hate and criticism. We must love and respect those who hate our Prophet. These are the teachings. This is the Way. When these evil people see what Muslims are, and what Islam teaches they will immediately abandon their own belief and accept Islam. Our beautiful deen will grow faster than ever before. Alhmadulliah. Allah will be pleased as we've passed the test and we will all enter Jannah inshAllah. What is happening now is a failed test. After every insult our Muslim brothers and sisters go on a witch hunt against those who insult, with assaults, killings, bombings, stabbings, death threats, violence, anarchy and general mayhem. Even those who silently support these radical Muslims are failing the test. Those who were thinking of embracing Islam will now turn their backs on the greatest religion of Peace because of these extremists. This makes Allah'tala very angry and you will bring his curse and wrath upon you. Once you fail the test there is no coming back. Jahanam (hell) is your final resting place where you shall abide therein forever.....

I am not advocating for/against Snowden/Assange's actions nor those of the people/governments pursuing them, and I understand the intention behind your comment. *HOWEVER,* I would like to simply say that your comparison deserves a great deal more nuance. I believe it important to point out that there is no actual *Fatwa* against those men. But most importantly - the Fatwa issued against Salman in 1989 was as follows: "14 February 1989 Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa *ordering* Muslims to *execute* author Salman Rushdie over the publication of The Satanic Verses, along with *anyone* *else* *involved* with the novel." No one has ever ORDERED Snowden/Assange should be executed where they stand if ever seen. No one has been promised entrance into their own personal idea of heaven for assassinating them nor has any leader of a nation/people/religious group declared to all that fall under their purview that Snowden/Assange *MUST* be murdered, let alone that doing so will bring eternal reward. I think these differences are pretty crucial to your point. Again, I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with your premise but I do believe that these facts and this nuance should not go without saying. Edit: Nor has any leader additionally ordered that anyone who had anything to do with Snowden or assange's actions must also be executed. These differences matter to your question.

This makes you sad to see him speaking, not knowing shortly later his old book Satanic Verses would catch up with him, in June 2022. It is sad to realize that the reason most places do not attack openly the gods and goddess that are sacred to many is precisely because it can cause emotional (not logical) reactions in people. As it was realized that the "wounds" do not heal in the minds of hearts of the crazies, who endured the "abuse" from their perspective, by someone who did not realize the consequences. If our rules of "freedom" are important to us, then there are also rules of "constraint" that can be applied on us by others, who will then feel they have the right to apply their rules on you - as unfair as it may seem. Clearly, when ideas are given freedom of expression, progress follows. However, Salman Rushdie at great cost realized that one cannot impose "their" understanding of truth on others. If I call someone's mother a prostitute, even if that was the truth - I should be ready to face the consequences.

i think, the main problem of common muslims and including most of their Quranic scholars, are too much "legalistic," (fiqh oriented), as if ayatollah (god guidance) is only one: al Quran (holy scripture) and its derivatives (hadist, ijma, qiyas, etc). factually, God him self, in very first revelation to Muhammad, is not asking Muhammad to study (iqra) the holy Quran (cos the kitab doesn't exist at that day), instead He command Muhammad to study (iqra) other ayatullah, we called as ayat Kauniyah (universe and all of His Creations in it). That why in serious and encyclopedic Islamic traditional school, we always taught that beside al Quran, there is another god guidance (ayatullah) called ayat kauniyah (the universe and all god creation in it). and for qur'anic scholars, we also know --from al Quran it self, there are two others god guidance (ayatullah), that we as muslims should seek for God Guidances: called as ayat insaniyah (human being) and ayat tarikhiyyah (human history). if common muslims and it scholars, uses all 4 God Guidance in balanced ways, we will not always fall into legalistic point of view when we talking or examining Islam point of view about woman/feminism, politics, evolution, LGBTQ issues, democracy, secularism, separation between religion and state, on terrorism, etc. for me, if sociology, political science, statistics, history on the rise and fall of civilizations/countries (as interpreters of ayat kauniyah and ayat tarikhiyyah) comes to the conclusion that democracy with separation between religion and state, is the best political system in the world for advancement human civilizations, then all Muslims should choose democracy with separation between religion and state, as preferable political system to practice in all Muslims majority countries. also if expert on biology, doctors, psychiatry, etc (as interpreter of ayat kauniyah and ayat insaniyah) , said that beside man and woman (as gender), we also has intersex, hemaprodyte, woman with more testosterones, man with more X chromosome, etc, then all Muslims should choose to agree that god him self gave us guidance / ayat that beside man and woman as gender, there also another genders/pronouns that we should cherish, protect, and respect (cos if we don't respect others God Creations, are similarly with we don't respect our God as their Creator). if we stubborn, only picks, one ayatullah, we called al Quran (holy scripture/ayat Qauliyah), as the one and only god guidance to follow, then muslims and it scholars, will always fall upon into legalistic point of view (fiqh oriented) when we examining what is islamic point view on everything under the sky. wahabbiyah, isis, al Qaida, etc are trapped in this narrow point of view about Islam and its believe. of course, for responsible and encyclopedic islamic teaching, all those narrow point views on Islam are wrong (at least incomplete), misguided, and disrespecting God. umar bin khattab, as on of few sahabah (closed friend of Prophet), several times choose to disregarding some textual issues stated clearly in al Quran, and pick other decision after he choose as Muhammad successor, as leader (khalifah/amir), if there are more fairer and more justice way (socially) on making decision as Amir/Leader, rather than choose from what already state very clear in al Quran. he always choose more fairer and more justice decisions, even others sahabah question his decision. and as we know it, umar bin khattab is one of several sahabah (closed friend of Prophet) that guaranteed (informed) by the Prophet that he is going to heaven. his way of leadership decision, was a hard evidence that the closest friend to Muhammad, also not only consider holy scripture (ayat Qauliyah), but also social aspect, fairness, and justice (ayat kauniyah), when he making decision as a leader. nobody in umar bin khattab time, dare to called umar bin khattab as heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel. but in modern era, several of loud muslims, loud muslim scholars, and most of jihadist will immediately call us heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel if we also uses 3 other God Guidance's beside ayat Qauliyah, when we speak, analyze, examining islamic point of view on everything under the sun. how strange is it, if we following completes God Guidance's, then be called as infidel, kuffar, or bid'ah. legalistic approach (fiqh oriented) on Islam has bad impact on advancement of Islamic civilization, and has backward effect on development of its peoples: the Muslims. but yes, in Islamic jurisprudence (ushul fiqh), we also has similar concept with Umar way, but unfortunately has more narrowed approach and clearly far from sufficient to be implemented in modern era, we call them: maslahah mursalah (public good principle) and maqashid syariah (ratio legal over legal specific). if muslims also incorporate social science, biology, technology, history, political science, psychology, etc (as part of rightful interpreter all of God Guidancs/ayatullah), many problem we faced today in many part of Muslim countries, will be addressed in responsible way. Muhammad him self, in his own word (Hadits Bukhari Collection no 6015), said: muslims should follow person with specific expertise on handling matter, so let political scientist handle political matter, health matter should handle by doctors, etc. do not let everything under authority of quranic expert. in general, muslim should treat expert on other ayatullah (scientist as rightful interpreter whole universe and all of His Creations in it, as rightful interpreter human being behavior and it history) equal to expert on holy scripture (al quran). Furthermore, on all wide range of social issues, every new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, should supersede (abrogate) any old interpretation from holy scripture, cos all of new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, are also rightful interpreter of God Guidance (ayatullah). falling to do so, should be interpreted as a disqualified argument/opinion. Many argument/opinion base on fiqh (islamic legal specific), kalam (theology) and falsafah (philosophy), factually in most areas are quite obsolete for addressing social, economic, and political problem in modern era, cos most of them are derived only from ayat Qauliyah (Quranic centric), which is an incomplete way to sorting our problem in modern era. Most of old argument/opinion already supersede/abrogated by new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist. Muslims should back to the complete of God Guidance in balance way on solving problem in Muslims world, not only using holy scripture as final say. and stop kuffar/infidel calling game, cos that game from a complete, genuine, and responsible interpretation of 4 God Guidances, is simply un islamic. and, as an open end conclusion, there is a deeper question: why common muslims and its scholars dare to disregarding 3 other God Guidance's? why muslims and its scholars become legalistic (only focus on 1 ayatullah / 1 God Gudance (ayat Qauliyah) called alquran, as if salvation of a civilization fate can be and must be depend on 1 cause only? as brief answer is: corruption and abuse of power by people in high power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers at that time. all of them, almost single handedly creates and propagate common muslims and its scholars into disregarding 3 other God Guidance's. peoples in power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers push and push relentlessly to narrow interpretation on morals and public interest thru perverted interpretation on the holy scripture. even, they dare to appoint unqualified islamic scholar as qadi for them to uses as fatwa producers in favors to their vested interest. since then, islamic civilization goes down spiral into inevitable decline from it's greatness. many fatwa produced in their regime will makes serious, genuine, and responsible islamic scholar scratching their head and shocked. fatwa on mihnah policy, on banning printing technology, banning radio, tv, google, youtube, etc, are among of perverted interpretation on holy scripture. it lead to tradition/repetition/reinforcement on using narrow interpretation islamic law for beating and punishing dissent and discontent on social injustice in islamic society. furthermore, it lead islamic society to become close minded, anti science, and trapped in textual approach tradition on just 1 god guidance called al quran (ayat Qauliyah) only, with narrow and more narrow interpretation. common muslim today and it scholar today are the real victims of bad fatwa born from dark alliance between high power, it cronies, big business that closed to muslim rulers before them. lets wake them up, by spreading the real genuine of God Guidance's and it's rightful interpreters that we called: sciences. amen.

“ I think truth and freedom are the two sides of same coin.” First he says “I think “ is not certainty so this man is wrong. Truth according to a man and fallen sinful men is not truth so he is wrong a second time. Freedom from what exactly? Freedom from good or evil? Be specific here Mr. Truth is God and freedom is a gift. So, two different things. “ Truth is a battle.” No, it is not. Truth is God. Truth is a battle for men. When they lie for interest, that is just lies and not truth. Stop confusing unclear thinking people. Either accept God as truth or go against him but please don’t burn other sheep. Going against God and questioning his truth is what the devil did and see where that disobedience led him. Absolute devilry this man is doing.

He is champion of freedom. He should have security always--- otherwise a religious fanatic can attack him anytime. I am surprized that there was no adequate security fo him , and a fanatic could attack him. Wish him rapid recivery.

What is the punishment for blasphemy in Islam? There is no punishment in Islam for blasphemy. No such punishment is prescribed in the Holy Quran, or in any of the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad(sa). Islam promotes the need for respect of all religions for the sake of peace in society, but it does not set out any punishment for blasphemy despite the offence it may cause people of faith. We have evidence in the traditions of the Holy Prophet(sa) where Abdullah bin Ubayyee (Chief of the hypocrites) continuously abused the Prophet(sa), and opposed him severely in Madinah. When he passed away, the Prophet(sa) stood to offer his funeral prayers but was asked by one of his companions, “O Allah’s Apostle! Do you offer the prayer for this man although he said so-and-so on such-and-such-a day?” and “that he is a hypocrite!”. The Prophet(sa) ignored his statements and continued to offer the funeral prayers of the dead man. (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 192) The above example shows that the Prophet(sa) never ordered any punishment for anyone who insulted or abused him or God; on the contrary he went to pray for them that they be guided aright. If somebody uses foul language against any holy person or teaching, Islam advises to keep away from such people as The Holy Qur’an says, And when you see those who trifle with our signs then turn thou away from them until then engage in a discourse other than that and if Satan cause thee to forget then sit not, after recollection, with the unjust people. (Ch.6: V.69) A book “ Rushdie Haunted by his unholy ghosts ” is a good read on this subject. This book and other related subjects with original teachings of Islam can be found on website www.alislam.org

@@dynamitebsb4520 That's what has happened with all the major religions of the world that with the passage of the time, people deviate from the core teachings of the Religion. Islam categorically rejects terrorism and prohibits suicide. Have you read Quran. Have you read anywhere in Quran that it tells Muslims to kill Muslims or anyone else for that matter ? The answer is no. In fact Islam says that if anyone kills a human being, it is as if he has killed all the humanity. Please make an effort.

Progressive left is the problem? And no one is speaking about the problematic behavior of the conservative right....I don't get why it's always the left Progressive that's always being criticized, but everyone all of a sudden is oblivious to the conservative right and thier classic and bigotry. Its fine to have differing opinions, and Eve offend others, but when those opinions take foot and start setting up systems to oppress others, get people killed, and set people up in situations that thier targets are more likely to meet tragedy, or those opinions lead to deaths of languages and cultures, who aren't hurting anyone THOSE OPINIONS NEED TO BE CANCELED. It's easy to say all that when you aren't on the receiving end of those "differing opinions" you know, like how believe my people are inferior, less intelligent, prone to violence, no good, destructive, or receiving government handouts, prone to addiction, recieve money every month, are weak, and our culture and traditions are up for sale grabs exploitation, and we sold our lands for liquor, or were to dumb to protect our hone, are savages, bar bargains and heathens, are too strong, big, older than we actually are, demonic when we get angry, our culture is worthless,, and so is our language, or we have no culture, or connection the the lands we were ripped from and all sorts of other bull kaka thrown our way. See those types of "opinions" as you call them have real life consequences. Like children getting shot, kindoms being overthrown and then the subjects and thier descendants being treated as second class citizens in thier own islands, genocide, and so on and so on. So for me, when we see isht like that starting to take root and flourish, it's time to destroy uproot and cancel it. It's easy to be critical when you look European and can walk down the street and you don't have to deal with the thick viscous bigotry we deal with and have to mindfully mentally combat everyday. If you don't know what that's like then stop criticizing as if you understand better than we do. Then what really bugs me is when the isht hits the fan, here the same people come who straddle the fence and trot out old Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. who was a "woke" I would say leftist and progressive activist. So stop straddling a fence but low key trying to defend the indefensible. These people want to control women's bodies, and "make America great again", even though we should be making it better FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST THE PEOPLE WHO LOOK WHITE AND THOSE WHO ALLY WITH WHITE SUPREMACY, they worry about who uses what bathroom and what people do in thier private time, but could care less when a young kid is gunned down by cops because he is Black. He'll these people would rather have guns, while children in general live in a low rumbling fear that one of thier peers is going to have a melt down and shoot them. But for some reason you're worried about us canceling people, and woke culture.....how irritating some so called "educated people are" get out of your books and see what is going on. And all this time we're wasting this country is turning to a second world nation. Even buildings are collapsing. Get it together.
