Trevor Noah just somehow knows the postive things to say and in that moment. Somehow it is a gift for him. He picks a subject and somehow he trys to give some good advice. He did that on the Daily Show. That is one of the many reasons people like his show.

Very, very true! There are too many people out there who confuse selfish, disrespectful, or just ignorant behavior with authenticity. They forget, as Trevor says, that there are many layers of any person's "self", all of which are "authentic", but the decision which one to show to the outside world depends on the situation and how close other persons present are to you (not physically, I mean in terms of friendship or family relationships or cultural proximity).

Maybe it's up to ones understanding of what authentic is. Me acknowledging your existence is still me being authentic or me being professional is still me unless I am not doing it in a comfortable way or trying to unnecessarily fit in. If I start being careless in the name of authentic then that is not authentic it is selfishness and plain stupidity 😢😢

Depending on what answer you were expecting to hear, might be the reason you didn't find he's explanation satisfying. Being true to oneself is a holistic endeavor, Trevor gave an elementary answer based on a question about being authentic & being consistent. He pretty much said being true to who you are should be contextually based on your surroundings by having emotional intelligence & reading the room, he over-explained it a bit but gave a solid answer!

Sometimes when asked a question, the question itself is flawed and needs as in this case a bit of tweaking to fit the person it is being asked of. Question asking, or interviewing is a true art in itself. Very few people seem to know how to ask a truly good question. Trevor is a master communicator and tweaked it to fit what he felt was the core of what was being asked. In any case, & for what it's worth, This is what I heard. (IMO most people neither know themselves, which comes before knowing how to stay true to that, or a path.
