    I remember using this strategy (sort of) on the TurboRisk freeware game until it improved its AI, then someone else was the jerk who held Australia, and taking Australia meant I lost too many troops. So I found other strategies. (There was also That Guy who took over South America.) It's really interesting to hear your thoughts on who has an alliance with whom--with TurboRisk there seemed to be no alliances, though one random player would attack the strongest person. I used a form of turtling and it was neat to see you fill in the details.

    I was in the same boat as the orange player in my last game. The difference was I was very aggressive at keeping the Australian turtle under 12 territories. If he tried to block me out I'd kill all the stacks besides Siam. Making sure to manually attack any stack in China or India and not take the territory. The higher income and not having the majority of my troops blocked meant I was in a better position to react when the other players killed each other.

    I just had a very interesting big finish. I had 4 continents, and 2 more opponents. I channeled them into a bottleneck that resulted in them each having 2 territories. The outer territories each had one guy, and the inner two had an army of 10 guys each. on either side of the bottleneck, i hand armies of 15 guys each. so it was 15 red, 1 orange, 10 orange, 10 yellow, 1 yellow, 15 red. I didn't attack right away, so that i didn't risk crippling my armies, but they couldn't attack due to having one guy in their outer defenses, and their inner defenses being able to only attack each other. naturally, neither player moved their inner forces out, less they risk getting attacked by each other, as combining their cards was the only chance either of them had, and neither wanted to give theirs to the other.

    Depends on who you're playing. Like I keep saying I just played a game where it got down to three of us and we each had around 200 troops. Me and the blue player were fighting it out in Europe, NA etc, while the orange player just turtled in Australia. After about 5 turns of the orange player doing nothing but watching us fight and collecting cards I took my army over to Australia and unblocked the orange player's big army. I gave her "good luck" messages for about 3-4 turns and She still refused to come out of her little hidey-hole so I just stopped fighting the blue player and just let him take over the world. So don't try turtling with me, I'll either attack you or just sit back and let another player win. It's bullshit and makes the game boring when a player just sits there and does nothing, waiting for everyone else to weaken each other so they can swoop in and win.

    I don't understand why eliminating another player is ever a good idea unless they have less than 10 troops left. The most you could possibly get from their cards is 10-12 troops. For example at 16:02 you had 86 troops gaurding Australia, then you eliminated green and ended up with only 74 troops after trading in your new cards. So you netted -12 troops from that conquest and lost all of the gained territory on the next turn.

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    2 жыл бұрын

    This game was played like 2 years ago so my thought process changed a lot since then and I might not necessarily agree with my past myself to what I said or did in that game anymore. But to generally answer your question is that if nobody ever eliminates someone, then the game won't end. Considering you lose only 12 troops in overall to take someone out from a fixed card game that might be a very good deal because you beat an opponent which could have later possibly gotten much stronger and won the whole game. In 5-6 player situations it could be more complicated and you'd have to think twice before taking someone out at the troop loss. But to make the elimination in the 4 player situation and getting to the 3 player situation no matter how weak I'd get I will always be able to survive as long as it doesn't worth to take me out for the cards and as long as I and another opponent have more troops combined than the 3rd player, we will always be able to balance him out as by seeing that he is getting quite stronger we would attack him. That's assuming you play with smart people. If you play with a bunch of inexperienced players who you know would over attack each other and wouldn't really know how to sustain the balance of the game, then of course it could just be the most ideally to hoard your troops and avoid making any attacks in general until you get more troops than all of them combined and at that point just simply take all of them out. Another reason why it could be good for you to take one of the players out in a 4 player situation even at the troop lose, as let's say two of your other opponents are fighting each other, so then if you eliminate that 3rd player who is neutral, then you might highly increase your chances to win, because while 2 other players will be in a war with each other, you will be able to just hoard your troops and wait till the moment in which you have more troops than both of them combined. And another reason if you see that 2 other players are foolishly fighting each other, but the 3rd player in comparison with you could really take the advantage over it and become quite stronger having good expanding possibilities, then you can eliminate one of those fighting players (assuming you and another player after elimination would have more troops combined than the 3rd player), so then you will know that the 3rd player would be balanced out.

    @@Risk4Ever Thanks for the reply, I guess there are some situations like you mentioned where it could be a good move in the long run but it just doesn't seem worth it to me in most situations. I agree that someone needs to be eliminated to progress the game but I notice a lot of people tend to overvalue taking another oponent out. I have seen people loose 30-40 troops taking someone out only to get 10 troops back, if not less. From a purely numbers perspective, that would be like picking a pointless fight with another player and loosing 30 troops. Why not let others scramble to eliminate the player and weaken their army in the process. It almost seems like you are doing the necessary dirty work for the other players. However, if you loose nothing for eliminating a player then I think it is always a good idea. For instance, if eliminating the player will reward you at least the number of troops you lost in battle, then eliminating them will progress the game, neutralize a possible threat, and prevent other players from gaining their cards. Of course there is some wiggle room there but my main point is that if you are playing with experienced players, in most cases you only hurt yourself when you go for eliminations. I very well could be wrong though. Eitehr way I love your videos!

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    @@benjaminjordan2330 I'm glad you enjoy watching my content! :) But before leaving you at that I'd potentially like to try explaining all of that in a bigger picture. Hopefully it will make more sense, but even if you will disagree, you're obviously free to stick to your own opinion to which at certain point I agree but let me explain it more in detail looking from a few of different perspectives: In 5-6 player situations I understand your point is that you're only hurting yourself if you take someone out at a decent amount of troops loss, in that case you could even set up yourself to be eliminated next if you're not wise about that. But in the 4 player situation eliminating someone and getting to the 3 player situation I'd say it becomes very irrelevant how weak or strong you and other players are as long as nobody has too much dominating position and as long as everybody understands how to properly play so to not give away the game for another player. For example in a 4 player situation you could wait till another opponent eliminates someone, then if you become the strongest player in the 3 player situation, then two other players can attack and make you as weak as they are, or you could eliminate someone by yourself, and then you and another player could attack the strongest player to even out the troops number eventually as well. However, there is something to take into account of course. In public lobbies players don't know too well about the balance of the game, then they're also tend to be very emotional and take attacks very personally and could rather suicide than to play to win, then some people want to be very pacifistic or being very afraid of getting suicided on, so they will rather still continue turtling and do nothing even when they would desperately need to help you out to attack the strongest player so he wouldn't end up having more troops than both of you combined. So looking from that perspective it's of course much better to be the strongest player rather than the weakest one. So when it comes to that case I agree that it's better to stay out of action and avoid wasting troops as much as possible. So yeah, generally it would be better for you that the 4th player would be eliminated by someone else rather than you, so unless you see a reason why it would be good to get rid of that specific player, like maybe if you see that another two players really hate each other, or you think that that player's playing style could really hurt you somehow, or maybe that's something related about position. So I agree with you from that perspective, however when it comes to the technical standpoint alone it doesn't too much matter if getting to the 3 player situation as the weakest or strongest player, if assuming you play with decent players who understand the balance of the game to not let someone become too strong and who wouldn't suicide based on emotions. But obviously in the public lobbies you will mostly meet players who are not too smart and act a lot based on emotions, so yeah in public lobbies the most optimal play would be to avoid wasting your troops as much as possible. Playing fixed card games in public lobbies is more about how to avoid getting suicided on and being the player who annoys others the least rather than the actual fundamentals strategy with a bunch of attacks. So you're thinking right here, but I'm just explaining why from a technical standpoint it doesn't really make a significant difference when getting to a 3 player situation. My personal point to eliminate someone is because I hate long stalemating games, so by eliminating someone I progress the game. In high rank public lobbies all players are just turtling, hoarding their troops while not making any attacks other than to capture a territory in order to get a card, so when everyone goes by the logic to not waste any troops unless it's worth for the cards, the game just stalemates, people sitting in a game doing nothing for hours until someone disconnects or suicides out of boredom. Anyway, getting back to the debate, even if our points didn't convince each other, we have the right to agree to disagree with each other. Obviously there is no person who knows absolutely everything, and then some things could be very subjective and influenced by our own experience 👍

    @@Risk4Ever I think you may have a point there, especially with 4 player games. I might just be used to playing with lower-intermediate players where they don't always pay attention to the bigger picture. If everyone is aware of each other then I think you would be right that it would make little difference so long as you don't become too weak. Also, perhaps if you are fairly confident a player will cash in their cards next turn and them attack you with them, it may be better to eliminate them, loosing some armies but replenishing some of them with their cards. I think it may be something to evaluate on a case by case basis.

    Just finished my most stressful game. About 2 and a half hours. Started off ok with mostly N America. One guys quit right away and became bot and was chilling in N Asia. Purple got Australia and S Asia and some of Africa. Yellow got most of Europe. South America was a mix of people. Game goes on as normal with me slowly expanding and getting set back. Everyone was in a state of slow growth. Finally purple and yellow work together her to kill blue bot. We all build huge army’s and yellow slowly shrinks but still has huge army. Purple still has Australia and it slowly getting more troops than me or yellow. Me and yellow switch places and I get most of Africa. Me and purple are in a kinda alliance and small fighting. Here’s where purple makes his first big mistake. Even with my big army close to mouth of Australia he moves his big army away from Australia. I move in right away and keep it. I do make a small mistake and trap my army but it was fine. We are all keeping each other from capturing continents. I’m holding my ground with purple and I’m starting to gain a little more troops then them. Here’s where purple makes the fatal mistake. He kills yellow big army and wipes him out. He does get 4 more cards but I still have more troops. Finally after just a little bit of whittling down his territory’s and Tripp’s I move my troops out of Australia knowing he can’t move in. He had split his big army into 4 and I plotted a course to take him out. He ends up with only 2 territory’s in S America and tries to take away Asia from me but I finally get to my next turn and take him out. GG

    I've pointed out how this strategy only works if you're playing dummies before but I just had someone try it in a game with me. The other player and I were duking it out while the orange player just amassed a huge army at the entrance of Australia. This person was a master too. So after warning her with "good luck" about 50 times and and unblocking her 300 troop army so she could get in the fight she STILL just sat in Australia collecting cards. So I just parked right next to her and did nothing while the other guy took over the world. That's why I mean, you try that turtling stuff on anyone with a brain and they're not going to allow it. I'm not going to fight and wear down another player while the third one sits there getting stronger. If I see someone turtling next to me I either attack or just let them get completely exposed. But yeah, if you're playing novices who don't know anything about the game turtling might be an OK strategy.

    The problem with this strategy is that against more experienced players, they can just continuously stockpile troops in Siam and basically trap you in Australia while they attack other places, assuming that they can't destroy you right then. Which is why it's important to keep Siam to prevent that. If you're lucky, you can assume a non-threatening position and they can, hopefully, ignore you for other players. Hopefully. To be fair though, you didn't really have much of a choice in this game. I do love me some Australian Turtle, though. 😎😈

    The "Turtling" strategy doesn't work in the games I play. As soon as someone has a few turns of doing this everyone else realises and just does the same thing. Do you have any counter to that? The games then get very long, boring and not very enjoyable with everyone just 'waiting out' each other.

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    4 жыл бұрын

    Turtling is common when it comes to high ranked player games. If every player plays correctly the game could go forever. I do not really have anything to advice to counter everyone's turtling I'm afraid. But to get into such situations quite rarer, you could play 4 player fixed card game instead of 5 or 6 players one, play with lower ranked players, if you don't care too much about your rank, or just switch to progressive, in public progressive card games stalemates are almost never happening to me, in progressive card games the most important thing is to focus on taking other players out when it's worth for their cards, so players are constantly looking to take someone out, and the players who just turtle, simply lose the game

    What is the difference between fixed and progressive risk? I'm new to the game.

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    4 жыл бұрын

    In progressive cards the value of sets goes after every traded set, starting with 4 and ending with 60. And in fixed cards, the value of sets are always fixed, 4 troops for infantry, 6 troops for cavalry, 8 troops for artillery, 10 troops for all three. In progressive cards the most important thing is cards. You become stronger by taking opponents after opponents out when it's for their cards. If you cannot take your opponent out, then you should avoid attacking them at any cost, as it will just be a waste of troops. In progressive cards is important to be spread out well enough, so it will be hard to take you out. When the value of sets become high, then continents don't really mean anything, so if you didn't get one in the beginning of the game, then don't waste your troops on any of them, they shouldn't be your main aim in progressive card games, as they mean nothing compared to cards. In fixed cards the most important thing is the balance of the game. Players shouldn't let that someone become way too strong. So your goal should be to help others to attack the strongest player balancing the game. Or differently you should be looking for a way on how to become the strongest player by yourself. The diplomacy is another part of the game, so alliances could help you a lot, but they should never be taken too seriously. There are basically 2 main ways to win at fixed: 1st one is by becoming the strongest player by expanding and successfully holding multiple continents, becoming much more stronger than anybody else; 2nd one is by becoming friends with basically everyone, turtling in your continent, and waiting till everyone destroy themselves too much, waiting the moment then you will have more troops than your opponents combined. But of course, you shouldn't always stay neutral, if you see that someone is becoming too strong, then you should help players to attack the strongest player. 2nd way is the most common way to win playing with low ranked players, since a lot of them try to use the 1st way to become the strongest, so they destroy themselves attacking each other way too much and don't even realize that they give a game for another player. I hope it helps 👍

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    4 жыл бұрын

    The best counter strategy would be to not let them capture and hold these continents, players with smaller continents shouldn't let them capture these. But if others don't attack them, then you probably shouldn't attack them as well... When you play with a bunch of masters then it's the best not to be one of the weakest players, as strong players are looking to eliminate the weakest players out (especially high ranked weak players). When you play with masters when it's better to go for North America, Europe or South America + Africa if possible. So by being one of the strongest players, you will be sure that nobody will afford taking you out, and at the same time you will possibly able to take out one of the weakest players if needed. But if you only got Australia, then just continue turtling and hope for the best I guess, haha 😅

  • @Risk4Ever

    @Risk4Ever

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ninjalife11 Yeah, if you play with like with novices-intermediates (or maybe even experts), then it's probably the safest to have Australia, usually they don't see an opportunity to take you out, so as long as you don't attack them - you should be good. For continents who have 2 or more access points, I would recommend making an alliance with your neighboring players and using turtling strategies, I would build one big army in East Africa if I have Africa, in Peru if I have South America; two big armies for Na and EU: in Northern Europe plus Scandinavia or Great Britain if I have Europe, in Western United States or Easter United States plus Northwest territory if I have North America.

    Personally I do not turtle that much as I prefer a more active playstyle always trying to manipulate others engaging each other. The thing I don’t like about turtling in Australia is that the African turtler always ends up having a surplus of troops. Today I destroyed an Australian Turtle expert player because I ended up having North America and I was expanding in Asia. Unfortunate my true natural ally (South America) destroyed a player in Africa (with no continent) and tried to gain all of Africa and ended up with not enough troops to defend. The Australian turtleplayer took him out (like you did) and bit me hard as my border with south America was undefended. In the next turned I destroyed the Australian turtleplayer because he made clear he wasn’t let me win the game. I ended up fighting an expert player who turtled in Europe all his troops, but ultimately a player who turned into a bot won the game as European turtling expert player and I were even and we totally focussed on eachother while the bot gained continent after continent. In a way my game showed a few similarities with yours, but with a different outcome.

    Flashes by Niviro if you're talking about the song after intro. If you're talking about intro itself, then I don't know what the song is, the intro wasn't created by me

    What are you supposed to do, if the opponents are playing very greedy trying to take big continents in early rounds, but don't prevent each other from doing so? I was in this situation once slowly building an army in Australia to capture it. One player captured North and South America leaving only 1 unit at each territory and the other players didn't even attack one territory to deny the troop bonus. Instead they only cared about themselves, trying to get big continent bonuses early. So I got being in units very fast, even though the other players were playing irrational, greedy and would have been taking it in a "normal" game with intermediate players. I'm talking about a low ranked player game.

    Just let them have these big continents as long as they balance each other, eventually these players should start fighting each other, they won't be happy getting the same number of troops as another one

    Well, these low ranked players doesn't know much about the balance of the game. Once yellow was taking North and South America, I got Australia and red got Europe. Red just didn't care about Yellow getting as many units as us two combined. So yellow went on with his greedy strategy going for Africa. Red kept vamping in Europe. Yellow got stronger and stronger, but before he could kill us two in one move, Red eventually suicided into me. He killed me, but obviously had no chance to win afterwards. I'm not sure, if he thought this was a good move or if he was angry with me for not attacking yellow or if he was just going for 2nd place. Nonetheless its his responsibility to keep Yellow from expanding and he had lots of possibilities to do so. If I had attacked Yellow, one of them would have probably killed me afterwards, without losing to many units. So there wasn't really much I could have done. I guess that's the main flaw with the game mechanics in Risk. It's only about who has more leverage to keep patient and let the others ones do the dirty work. Playing as a grandmaster against intermediates must be hard, because you are the one who needs to win, while they would be happy about second place. So they could just camp until you do the dirty work for them, or until the expanding player just kills both of you. And if everybody plays perfectly strategy-wise, the game always ends up in a stale mate. Then it's about who got more spare time and patience. In many of your games, its basically the same thing. After some time one player wants to end it, pulls a dumb move and you can just finish them of.
