Australian Tidepool Corals of subtropical New South Wales

Check out these subtropical Aussie corals in the tidepools off Minnie Water, NSW Australia.
Spend some time with me as I look for Acropora, Turbinaria, Palythoa and a variety of LPS, at low tide.

I'd love to see more of this stuff! It'd also be great to see more on the conservation side of this and balancing that with being allowed to catch or harvest the animals there!

I’ve thought about doing some videos on collecting marine fishes, but put the idea off, as I do collect by myself. I figured the only way would be by a lot of shaky GoPro footage! Maybe I could strap a GoPro to a lead weight and sit it in a strategic spot!

This was a real treat. I think sometimes as aquarists, over here in the states, we don’t realize the amount of sun light some of these corals are getting. I was blown away to see micromussa and Corallimorpharia in such shallow water. The fact there was acropora growing right off the shore, is just amazing. You have quite the backyard there. Thanks for sharing this video. There’s a lot of great information to be had, by seeing these corals in the wild. 👍🏻

Cheers Dave. The video is a bit cringy, but I was simply trying to show some of the habitat. The Micromussa has me confused, because the only time they do any good in my tanks, is when I push them off to the side, and they get no light. Yet here they are in rockpools, although they do seem to occur next to higher rocks, which would probably cast full shade for much of the day. I think it must just be the turbulent shallow water is constantly bringing them food in the form of detritus and silt

@@australianaquarist I didn’t find this video cringy at all. In fact you come across very genuine and that’s what allows your channel to grow. I follow another YT channel (Reefcraft) someone from Australia, like yourself, and they post short videos of corals in their natural environment. It’s my favorite type of content. Cheers 🍻

So do I It’s an amazing place, especially in the thick of a good dry summer. The water clarity when the swell is cut off is fabulous, and some seasons I have to contain my collection activities, as there can be so many tropical fish to target

this just came up and is awesome, I see the vids from the US and realize how lucky we are although I stay is SA the rockpool life is much the same except the fish like the orange shoulder we do get butterflies, and the convict tangs this side. just a shame I live 600Km from the see.

The baby butterflies are one of my favourites to see when snorkeling . The first tropical fish to “ arrive “ are the Threadfin butterflies ( Chaetodon auriga). Seeing them signifies the start of the new season to me.

Great video! I've been meaning to do a couple of these but the last couple of times I've been out the water clarity wasn't to favourable and then we had covid, it's amazing the amount of marine life we have so close to the coast in our southern areas and we see so many go up north to see it when it's so far off the coast in most hot spots, I have some nice areas around me just have to find the time to get to them, looks like you'll have some interesting content, I'll give you a plug on some of my groups to hopefully get you some more subs 🙂

Yeah, it’s been a terrible few summers for diving! The water clarity in the lagoon was still a bit off, with the wind and swells we’ve had of late. Despite being a flower grower who relies on good rainfall, I’m hoping for a dry summer!!

I can always gauge the seasons collecting and diving by the number of juvenile butterfly fishes, and the presence or absence of juvenile Clown and Orange- shouldered Tangs

@@australianaquarist Last time I went down to Balina for the weekend the night I turned up there was a storm and the same thing happened up this way, I'm hoping for the same, even for the freshwater, last time I went up north to Cairns the weather was the same and in winter so the creeks had mostly bad visibility.
