Australian Speaks Croatian?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey guys, despite Croatian being half my heritage i have not spoken the language in 10 years. So now i try to get back some dusty words and form sentences to speak to you in the lovely language of Croatian, sorry if i am terrible.

I am half Croat also from Sydney like you and I have realised that I understand Croats where croatian is not their first language better then those who live there. I don't even need to read the subtitles to understand you lol, when my family from overseas speak they are just too fast to understand

Your croatian is really great, there are some grammar mistakes of course (you can't know everything, right?). But your pronunciation is really great like for letters č and ž (since usually people can't pronounce those coz it's kinda hard tbh). Those little mistakes aside, your croatian is actually really great, which is impressive. Bravo!

I think you did a great job! You speak about as well as me and I am half croatian. I grew up with my Croatian grandparents so when I was a little girl I was fluent. Now, I have forgotten so much but I understood everything you said. Well done! I love the fact you remember your cultures (Arabic and Croatian) PS you are cute! :)

This was great. Nice and slow and easy to pick up some words. My dad's parents came to Sydney from Croatia and spoke Croatian in the home, but he never passed it on to me. :-( I finally got to visit Croatia last year, aged 48, and now I really want to learn the language. You have inspired me!!

Wow, there are so many words in your language which sound similar to saMskRitam (and hence hindI, urdU bANglA, etc.), yet I never knew it (I noticed the same thing with Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, etc. lol). I don't know how you spell the words, but just by hearing them, they sound very similar, here are a couple I noticed: You use something which sounds like "dan" for day, whereas we use दिन (dina) or दिवस (divasa) You use something which sounds like "ya sam" for I am, whereas we use अस्मि (asmi) for I am, so in saMskRitam I would say यशस्करणोऽस्मि (yashaskaraNo'smi), which under sandhi vichchheda could be separated into यशस्करणः (yashaskaraNaH) and अस्मि (asmi). Also, my name is different in saMskritam than punjAbi, since the punjAbi version (jaskaran) comes from the shauraseni prAkRita form jashakaraNa, which in turn comes from the saMskritA form yashaskaraNa [yashaH/yashas means praise whereas karaNa means doing, participial form of karoti, which means "to do," which is also where the word karma [action] comes from) You used something which sounds like "zivam" for "I live" whereas we use जीवामि (jIvAmi) for "I live," which is the prathamapuruSha, vardamAnakAla (first person, present tense) form of jIvati, which means to live. You used something which sounds like "dvadesetiosem" for 28, whereas we use अष्टविंशति (aShTaviMshati). I think you Croatians probably multiply the ten by the factor in the number, whereas we add numbers to the tens factor. So द्वादशम् (dvAdasham) in saMskritam is 12 whereas in your language the linguistic cognate is probably 20 or something. However, we do multiply when it's not a factor of ten, so त्रिसप्तम् (trisaptam) is tri (3) * saptam (7) or 21, also known as ekaviMshati (eka [1] + viMshati [20]). Another thing weird about saMskritam is that when एक (eka) is added to a word it adds one, whereas when ऊन (Una) is added, it subtracts one, so ऊनविंशति (UnaviMshati, 19, lit. -1+20) = नवदश (navadasha, lit. 9+10). Annoying having multiple words for the same number, right? You used something which sounds like "malo" for little, whereas we use मल (mala) for something which is nasty, dirty or awful (quite a different meaning there, lol) You used something which sounds like "priya" for before, whereas we use प्रिया (priyA) for something which is beloved or a friend and use पूर्वम् (pUrvam) for before You used something which sounds like "more" for sea, whereas we use मीरः (mIraH) [also सागरः (sAgaraH), पयोधिः (payodhiH) and समुद्रः (samudraH)] You used something which sounds like "data" for father, whereas we use पितृ (pitR) or पिता (pitA) when speaking formally or अप्पा (appA) informally; दाता (dAtA) in saMskritam actually means someone who gives (dadAti literally means to give and dAnam means offering), but when it comes to brother you used something which sounds like "brat" whereas we use भ्राता (bhrAtA) or भ्रातृ (bhrAtR) You used something which sounds like "chesht" for six, whereas we use षष् (ShaSh) or षड् (ShaD) You used something which sounds like noch for night, whereas we use नक्तम् (naktam) You used something which sounds like "videmo" for "I will see," whereas we use वेत्स्यामि (vetsyAmi) for "I will find" or "I will see," which in turn comes from विन्दति (vindati) and ultimately from the dhAtu (root) विद् (vid). The dhAtu "vid" could also refer to thinking, much like जानन्ति (jAnanti). The word वेद (veda), which derives from vid, could also refer to knowledge, science, or even truth [like in the mantrapuShpam: Mantra Pushpam - Vedic Hymns] Sorry for going off on a tangent, I just find it interesting when I notice cognates between languages. It's especially cool if they exist 5500 kilometers apart. Then again, I do have what is probably an unnatural obsession with India (especially for a Pakistani Punjabi of Tajik descent) so I just have to blurt stuff out if I see similarities with Ancient and Classical Indian languages like saMskRitam & tamizh, lol.

Helps my pronunciation. It is interesting to see the similarities with Latin, though much of it is different. Both of my children studied Arabic @ uni and visited the Lebanon.

Not similar, they are the same language; they exist in four 'standardised' registers because of politics and history. Bosniak and Croat are written in Gajica were as Serb and Montegrin are in Cirilica Azbuka. Differences are like the British English and American English, socialised/Socialized and how they pounce vowels. It's not like Arabic were the differences are quite substantial despite the common name.

Well I could understand everything you said but its very very very hard to learn Croatian and speak it as a people who live here and were born here. Croatian have 7 cases,( i found translation of "padeži" on google translate, nominativ, genitin, dativ etc. same as latin or german with some exeptions) if you know what I mean :), for example german have 4 cases and I know people that moved in Germany at the age of 20 and still cant speak it correctly, what is not case for someone that move in English speaking countries, even my aunt that move to Geelong, VIC when she was 35 knows English like native :D My gym teacher was Macedonian (they dont have cases aswell) and she still doesnt speak croatian well, she puts everything in nominativ( answers the question Who?What?) like you do :) but after all its important that we understand you dežurni hejteri nemojte me razapet, pokušavam vježbat engleski spamanjem na youtubeu :D

DObar! But I´ll speak English for you to understand easier :) Can you tell me how I could get to Australia? I mean, work and live there? Croatia is really shitty now, a lot of people eat from the garbage, there is no jobs, etc. So, I´d like to work and live in Australia, and I think I´d fit in pretty good since my English skills are pretty good.
