Australian on the German Autobahn (First time Experience from Berlin to Frankfurt)

Buckle up, brace yourselves because we have are going on the German Autobahn...where apparently there are no speed limits as these 2 grandpa drivers watch every German car and motorcycle speed past us at insane speeds...
This marks the start of our German Fairy Tale Road trip as we make our way from Berlin towards the very cute half timbered house town of Quedlinburg.

You can't really see if you are sticking to the right most lane on the Autobahn, but in the only front shot in the video, you were on the middle Lane with no cars in sight in the right lane. In Germany (and most other European countries) outside of city limits only the right lane is for driving and the others are for overtaking only. Rule of thumb is no more than 45 seconds without cars to the right of you, if you are on an overtaking Lane. Not sticking to the right lane results in a 80€ fine and a point in Flensburg (8 Points mean a driving ban in Germany). Also, 120km/h is indeed pretty slow for a non restricted Autobahn section 😁

Jude Lion didn't think about MPH actually, but if they were overtaken by so many people and especially delivery vans, 120km/h is much more realistic. There are not a lot of people on the Autobahn doing more than 150km/h (120mph would be 190km/h)

Flying The Nest If you are to scared to go any faster, why don't you stick to the right lane 🤔 (not to mention that you legally have to stick to the right lane as much as possible, especially because overtaking on the right is strictly forbidden, and fast cars don't expect you on the middle Lane)

Couple of rules for driving on an autobahn: -if the right lane is free: use it -never (and i mean NEVER) overtake on the right side, except for the case when you are in a traffic Jam -you only may drive as fast as you want if their is a sign that sais so (the crossed out speed limit/the grey crossed out sign) -before you switch lanes, look behind you as the people may drive as fast as they wann -The lane on the very very right is only for people who have to stop due to accident or car failure and you are not alllowed to use it -just dont be dick

"before you switch lanes, look behind you" however, on the autobahn, don't do that like you usually would. only turn your head and watch out to the back from the corner of your eye. do not turn your torso as with the speeds involved even a little unintentional jerk to the steering wheel can have disastrous effects.

  • @galier2

    @galier2

    6 жыл бұрын

No. Ich bin ein Berliner can also be said by a Berliner. The sentence is ambiguous but the context makes it clear what is meant. As both senses ar more or less as likely, there's no oddness when hearing someone say it. It is possible to joke about the ambiguity but it has to be constructed. it is not automatic. To give a contrasting example in english. The word ejaculate nowadays always has a nasty meaning so it makes it very odd to read Sherlock Holmes and Watson ejaculating quite often in the books (23 times to be precise, but it only means “to dart or shoot forth; to throw out suddenly and swiftly, eject.” with no sexual connotation). So the oddity of an expression depends on the sense it has the habitually.

Really thin dough with really thin slices of potato, with rosemary and olive oil, and it's a pizza without tomato sauce. It's really yummy! I am craving itnow while thinking of it. One of the best pizzas ever! When you are in Rome (or somewhere else in Italy probably too) try it!

Only the Diesel is a Renault/Dacia Engine. But yes, the Quality Standards have fallen massively at Mercedes and all the things that made them Great, including considering their Customers as intelligent Owners, is gone. It's that way with most new Cars which insults me greatly. You get no information, no Dipstick, no Temperature, no Control and without Special Tools no Access to anything. Working on an W123 and W124 Diesels is just such a pleasure in Comparison. They are built to be accessible for the owner,, supremely simple and straightforward. And given correct Oil Change Intervals and Valve Adjustment, a Million KM aren't even a stretch. Whenever I get in a new Car, and it Bongs and wishes me a Good Day, all I hear is a gentle "Fuck you, you are my Bitch now" while it gently reaches for my Wallet and secretly giggles at the Idiot who bought it. They just creep me out. Car Manufacturers seem to consider their Customers as the worst Stereotype of People. Shallow, Stupid and Morbidly Inept, to the Point that even giving them a Water Temperature Gauge or a Dipstick seems a Waste, and the Oil Pressure and Temperature are gone forever I fear as well. Nope, now everything is hidden under eternally ugly Plastic and all you rely on for Engine Information is a bunch of Failure Prone Electronic Sensors. But us obedient little Consumers are happy with that. We'll keep swallowing and swallowing, and there is no End in Sight, give us something to Swallow and we are happy. Consumerism is such an addictive Disease.

I'm german to and here are my experience with german autobahn: the right lane almost used by big trucks and sometimes busses. they causes deep rins with theire tires and havy weights. so if it's starts to rain, this rins fills up with water and if you drive your car through this, you feel your tires "swimm" and spinning if you triy too speed up! aquaplaning ist the magic key!! and it starts at a speed 100km/h +!!! ceep this in your mind if you drive on the autobahn and you will be save! and don't listen to people saying that it's posible to drive more than 120 if it rains. they're crazy and didn't care of theire and other ones live!! german beer taste different as it will do in other countries because the brewer uses the purity law! I won't say that it is better, but it taste different, thats true! I tryed beers in danmark, netherland and england. and I found out ( this is only my oppinion! ) that it taste delicious too. the only thing that scares me in england, the cut the top of the foamcrown!!! we do you do this??? thats horrible! :-) potatopizza sounds verry delicious and I never get this before! so I think I had to travel to Quadlingburg and try it! ;-) I am glad to see more clips like that from you! please go on! see ya Holger

6:06 "it wasnt bombed in the war, because they not making weapons here, they not making planes here." Well, there are so many towns that were bombed wich didnt produced any waepons. The bombing aim - specally Bomber Harris' doctrince - was to hit every house in Germany, with less difference.Take old Potsdam for example, it was bombed in april 45. The order was to destroy the historic town centre. You can find that in the RAF archieves. Why? Hmm jut because they were able to do it. So this town you visited just had a lot of luck.

People often think you may drive as fast as you want on the Autobahn, but this is only true if there is no speed limit of course. The delivery van and other drivers shouldn't drive that fast but then speeding tickets in Germany, especially out of town are rather cheap as long as you are not grossly over the speed limit (let's say 160 instead of 120...)

Well one might also mention that the speedometers in cars don’t show exactly how fast you’re going, they usually always show a speed that’s a few percent higher than what you’re actually driving. By law speedometers aren’t allowed to show lower speeds than what you’re driving but they can show up to 10% + 4 km/h too much. According to the ADAC on average the manufacturers show 4.7% too much, but it differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, e.g. for AUDI the ADAC measured a difference of 3.1% whereas for Nissan it was 6.2%. As a result if your speedometer says 120 km/h it might actually only be something like 114 km/h. www.google.de/amp/www.sueddeutsche.de/auto/verkehr-jeder-tacho-zeigt-die-geschwindigkeit-zu-hoch-an-1.3675876!amp

You are two really, really nice people, but I hate when people do this and as we drive quite high speeds this can be very dangerous if small cars want to overtake you and have to change from the far right to the far left and back while BMWs are driving 200kmh+ there (Overtaking on the right is forbidden). However, I wish you the best time here in Germany :) And ps look out for the grey circle with stripes (->no speed limits anymore) and have fun :)

God I remember when I was in Europe in 2015 with Top Deck and we were driving from Dresden to Berlin and hearing the BMW’s, Audi’s and Mercedes Benz go past at 180kms/hr + and we were all going WTF, especially all the people who were police officers on our tour! The Top Deck bus driver said the speed limit is 130kms/hr on some Autobahns but most don’t have a general speed limit, you just need to know what sign to look out for so you don’t have the police pulling you over

130 km/h is recommended speed-limit on the autobahn. There are quite large sections of the autobahn with actual speedlimits going from 70 to 120 km/h (normally - sometimes they go down to 50 but that's only at construction sites^^) but if there is nothing else written it's recommended speedlimit of 130 km/h. As the name says, it's recommend ... you can go as fast as the traffic allows. And really it's not much of a speed-limit but rather recommended speed xD At normal traffic on those sections 130/140 km/h in my experience is the speed you can comfortably drive on the autobahn. Like the normal traffic on the autobahn moves around that speed. So it's no wonder that driving 120 km/h you get constantly overtaken, cause general traffic moves at around 140 km/h.

Just imagine the historic Potsdam was bombed on 14th april '45 (yes this late), it had no industry too. The RAF just had the order to destroy German culture. Frankfurt is just a lucky individual case.

What most don't know: It's not just the Autobahn where you can speed. It depends on, how the road is constructed. Basically: EVERY Road, having more than 2 lanes per direction and each direction is separeted by a guardline/wall you are legal to just flat out (for as long there is no limit because of noice reduction near citys or something)! Thats for Autobahn (lettered A) Highways (Bundesstraßen, lettered B) and communal roads (mostly lettered L or K) all the same - so, it depends on the construction of the road..... i love how quick i can get back home from work, here. Btw. nice to see Quedlinburg...i was born there :D.

I had to LMAO as you said the german beer has not that "beery" taste like the beer back home..and I totally understand your perspective...but in fact every german beer is brewed like it was brewed 1000 years ago...because there is a law since then and valid till today called "Reinheitsgebot" (=in english kind a like "Purity-law") which dictates which ingrediants and in which ratios these are allowed to use while brewing for having the right to call it a beer ....so german beer has the - authentic - "beery" taste...what ever your beer in Australia would taste like and no matter if someone like it or not....Well I know Foster´s but that´s it..and I wouldn´t recomment it to a good friend who loves to drink beer..there is nothing else to say from my perspective about Foster´s..and "no offence".. Well Austria and the Czech Rep. (who invented the "Pils" refering to the town "Pilsen" in the Czech Rep. by the way) as well because they´ll also have the same "Reinheitsgebot" because of the period of the medi-eval/dark-aged "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nations" (=a whole bunch of smaller and bigger german duchys from the north sea to middle Italia) where both were a part of it till 1806 as Napoleon came and went berserk through whole Europe and simply destroyed Europe´s old political order...

yes, in Berlin they are called _Pfannkuchen_ (literally translated "pancakes"), and what is called _Pfannkuchen_ almost everywhere else is called _Eierkuchen_ in Berlin (thin _Eierkuchen_ are _Crepes_ :-). Thus everywhere else they are called _"Berliner Pfannkuchen"_ or short _"Berliner"_ . Thus no person from Berlin would be confused about someone saying _"Ich bin ein Berliner"_ ("I'm a Berliner", meaning "I'm one of you" when JFK said that; only stupid people do the stupid joke of confusing JFK with a jelly donut). you also mostly can see what kind of "jam" is used by looking at the coating: powdered sugar is on top of plum jam filled _Pfannkuchen_ (the one that you had), glazed sugar on most others, without additional fruit/items on top for red/mixed jam, and with fruit/items for many other fillings, eg a piece of pineapple, or they have a chocolate coating with or without white stripes, etc. ps: and yes, they are not well suited for cars, not only because of the filling, but also because of the sugar coating, and because they themselves can be a bit dry sometimes so that you want to drink something (preferably a cup of coffee) which is not very well suited for cars either, even less if it's not your own car.

  • @Anson_AKB

dearseall: as far as i *_knew_* Wiener and Frankfurter are very similar but still different and in most places you can select between them, and i was (wrongly) told that there were two exceptions: in Frankfurt all were named Wiener and in Wien all were named Frankfurter. _but that is not entirely true and reality is more difficult :-)_ _when writing this, i looked it up in the German Wikipedia (search for "Frankfurter Würstchen" and "Wiener Würstchen") and learned a lot. this is how i now understand the history:_ the original seems to be the Frankfurter from Frankfurt, first produced before 1800 (except that some Austrians only say "from south Germany"). until 1864 shops (in and around Frankfurt) were only allowed to handle one single type of meat (pork or beef) and thus it was made only from pork. then someone (from Frankfurt?) went to Wien where that restriction did not apply and created Frankfurter there, from a mixture of Pork and Beef with varying amounts of those two types of meat. In Germany, the name "Frankfurter Würstchen" is protected and may only be used for sausages made in that area and they are made from pork. that's probably why most sausages of a similar kind in Germany are called Wiener instead of Frankfurter, meaning that when you buy a Wiener it is made from pork and beef, or maybe it was made only from pork but not in Frankfurt. in addition to this strict naming, there might be "Würstchen Frankfurter Art" ("Art", "á la" or "in a way like", meaning that it's almost the same but doesn't completely match the requirements, similar to "Schnitzel Wiener Art" which is made from pork instead of a real "Wiener Schnitzel" which is made from veal). but outside of Germany the names are more generic and thus not protectable, and thus any of these sausages (that in Germany would have to be named Wiener) may be called Frankfurter when made in Wien or sold in the USA. _and this seems to have been the history why these sausages originated in Frankfurt, are named Wiener, and still became famous worldwide as Frankfurter ..._ _... if your brain now doesn't feel like ground meat (which has different translations in German depending on whether it is pork or beef and how much fat it has :-)_
