OLL means Orientation of Last Layer, meaning that you put all of the top/ bottom pieces facing correctly in one step. PLL mean permutation of last layer, meaning that after your OLL step, you put all the pieces on their correct position, thus solving the cube. You can combine OLL and PLL along with your beginner's method. After you do this times can go as low as 40 seconds, and after that learning F2L ( Fridrich's method) can get them as low as 20, or less.

Fridrich is a method for the first two layers, OLL and PLL are optional for it but the optimal method as well. As such they are usually paired with Fridrich.

beginner's method consists of 7 easy steps: 1.- Making a cross on top layer. 2.- Turning your cube for the rest of solve, then make bottom corners. 3.- Make the second layer edges. 4.- Making a cross on the top layer. 5.- Orienting your cross. 6.- Positioning corners. 7.- Orienting corners. OLL and PLL turn steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 into two steps with the use of algorithms. F2L (First two layers) consists of making your bottom corners and second layer edges at the same time, combining steps 2 and 3.

My friend used beginners method until he was averaging around 25 seconds.. then he learnt F2L + 2 look LL(2 look pll and oll). And he averages now around 22 seconds.. It depends, i believe he should go for the f2l and 2 look pll+OLL. Might be tough to start with, but as it goes, it can be beneficial.

he is using Fridrich's method, but I would recommend that you first worked on mastering your beginners method before trying out more advanced methods. i'd say that you should first lower your times to 1.30, then learn OLL and PLL, and when you master those you should move on to Fridrich's.
