I came back from a 6day visa free vist to Chongqing a week ago Luckily met a Chonqing local returning after her Singapore/Malaysia vacation and she volunteered to spend a few days guiding me to hidden parts of the city and introduction to Alipay and the fantastic Metro system.. Be prepared for lots of stairs and walking to see the hidden places. The people of Chongqing including Police and other public employees were all willing to give assistance when asked. No graffiti or litter and safe even in the back streets. I'll be returning ASAP so much yet to see.

It takes under an hour from Chengdu to chongqing on high speed rail. The Yangtze River cruise starts from Chongqing ends in Yichang, three days.

Chengdu is not situated on the Yangtze River. Minjiang, a tributary of Yangtze River, flows pass the outskirt of Chengdu but is not commercially navigable, i don't think.

I actually don't understand the mindset of Australians or westerners for that matter. I daresay as a someone from SE Asia (specifically Singapore), there's nothing for me to be shocked about. Is it possible maybe that our media (and other SE Asian media as well) showed us a more balanced portrayal of China (both the advanced and unsavoury parts of it) where as western media is broadcasting only all the negative aspects of China, hence the "shock" they get when they see that China does have positive aspects too? Or has the west fallen so much behind in infrastructure development and use of advanced technology that something I as a Singaporean think is nothing special but is something that blows your mind? Also isn't it commonsensical that every country has both good and bad (maybe with the exception of a hermit country like N Korea) and a country can't be only ALL bad, or do westerners (australians in this case) lack the ability to process what's been given to them by the media? Surely when your media show US shootings day in and day out you wouldn't jump to the conclusion everything in US is bad right just based on that? If this is the case, what's so different about China the country (I'm not talking about the Govt) then that it leads you to think of it is bad before you visit? Anyway I find westerners a very amusing species in the way they trust totally what the media tell them.

Not sure about the last comment. I spent many years teaching critical thinking to my Asian students. Blindly following media is more Asian in my experience.

Western media and propagandists try to indoctrinate the western population in to believing China being a unfree hellhole on the brink of collapse full of miserable people so yes lots of videos by westerners coming to China comment on the difference between how China is depicted by western media and propagandists and how it is in real life. This is probably going to keep be a topic in videos from China until it become common knowledge among western population that the western depiction of China are like the depiction of WMD`s in Iraq in 2003 aka pure lies.
