Never get sick of this band or James Reyne. Brilliant singer/songwriter who does his best work acoustically. You will never get sick of the songs he sings...its just something about his enunciation that is just gold.

Doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, the goosebumps just keep coming out, right from the first drum beat. Love it and this band so much and am so grateful to have been alive and partying my tail off to bands like Australian crawl - which, incidentally, is the name of the swim stroke that the rest of the world knows as free style swimming.

After all these years I just found out that Reckless is actually about heroin addiction . Australian Crawl management was the late Glenn Wheatley that took the Little River Band USA made John Farnham an icon and got Delta Goodrem started in the industry . Australian Crawl first album Boys Light Up 1980 was produced by Little River Band’s guitarist David Briggs . Unfortunately Australia Crawl had one album in 1985 that didn’t get the attention of their earlier albums . Australian Crawl broke up 1986 . The singer songwriter James Reyne went on with successful solo career in Australia and strangely enough in Brazil . Brazilian surfers visiting Australia in the 80s loved Australia Crawl so much they took albums back home to Brazil with them and Aussie Crawl music took off there . James Reyne did a Brazilian tour in the 90’s thinking he just performing in small venues a few 100 people but he end performing in stadiums in front of thousands . Sadly most of original key band members have now passed on .

Everything about this song is evocative to your average Aussie. The references to the Manly Ferry, the Antarctic and Burke & Wills (initials in the tree - just Google that and see what you discover!) dig deep into the Aussie Zeitgeist. The slow pace of the dirge, the strained, emotional vocals and the perfect soul-wrenching guitar - everything is PERFECT.

That's awesome Mick great choice mate lol! Oz Crawl was the first live band I ever saw with The Radiators as support band at Moruya Speedway on south coast of NSW when I was 13, I think they wrote a song about it "Oh what a Night". Early 80's probably 82 or 83? Great concert.

Sounds like a quaint little ditty but the lyrics are very deep with Australian historical references and emotional conflict.

Not sure that it is specifically about addiction. I haven't heard that interpretation before but it could well be. I think it is one of those fantastically written songs that means many things to many people. Depending on your own life experiences. Fantastic! A bit like "when the war is over". Is it about Vietnam or is it about marriage breakdown?

It is a song that quintessentially reminds me of Australia in the 80’s, but for me, other than the Australian links to Manly Ferry (the ferry that goes between Sydney to a suburb of Manly) and Burke and Wills, the best part is the guitar on this track, It sounds so so good

Oh my goodness . I remember being holidays with my cousins when this hit it big . Everyone swooned over James Reyne . To me being a baby teen had no idea what they were singing about at the time . It was such a deep song and james himself I think was thought of as sullen . Regardless it’s an emotional song once you understand it. The rhythm of song is slow like a heart beat at rest. He was a sexy as hell. His brother brother david has some hits of his own and became a tv presenter . Xoxox hugs sweety
