Australia v Wales - Match Highlights - Rugby World Cup

Спорт

Australia held on to beat Wales, despite playing almost ten minutes of the second half with 13 men, meaning the Wallabies finish top of Pool A.
Australia took a 9-6 lead in the second half, extended by a Foley penalty in the 49th minute before things took a bad turn for the Wallabies. Both Will Genia and Dean Mumm were yellow-carded within three minutes of each other and Wales attacked the line relentlessly, but they could not find a way through as grim Wallaby defence held firm to eventually return to full strength and claim a famous victory.
Wales began the match at a great rate, with their pack exerting huge pressure, winning an early scrum against the head and forcing numerous turnovers in the half, but a penalty from fly-half Dan Biggar and a 3-0 lead was all Wales had to show for their early dominance.

That 8 minute passage of play where the australians were fending of the welsh with only 13 men was utterly enthralling. It was like the battle of alamo. There may have been no points scored but i still think it was one of the highlights of this world cup. You can't help but credit the insane resistance of the men in green and gold. As an englishmen i was willing wales to score but having held out in such circumstances you have to admire the aussie's, they fought like warriors.

Has to be the best defensive performance by the Wallabies in five years. Normally we would have conceded a penalty try or try in that scenario, but the boys showed huge heart.

+Mike Rotchburns It was awesome. I get more excited watching that kind of defence than any try scoring play. Favourite part was where Adam Ashley-Cooper flew up and took man and ball, then Australia with only 13 men still managed to throw two blokes into the resulting ruck to secure the ball. Wonderful stuff, a sight to behold.

I'm surprised that the Welsh haven't got any credit for making it extremely difficult for one of the best teams in the world. The Wallabies played skilled but very dishonest rugby in my opinion. Not to mention the plague of injuries, Wales did very well against The Wallabies with a 2nd a 3rd rotation squad team. Not to mention that both defenses were impenetrable, seeing as no tries were scored this game. Wales did well against a giant team.

As a Welshman I could have punched a hole through my tv when we didn't score when they were down to 13 men, for an international rugby team that is pretty criminal. I remember thinking that if Rhys Webb was playing that we would have got a try. Even though Gareth Davies is a good scrum-half and had a very impressive tournament, Rhys Webb is a more intelligent player and would have lead us over the line for the score, which COULD have won us the game. But you've got to give it up to the Aussies for that amazing defence. They had no right to keep Wales out at that point, so props to them for that. But I also can't help but think it was Wales who also wasted the opportunity as well as Australia denying it.

speaking as a welshman, yeh the aussies deserved to win the game due to their brave defence with two men down.overall all the injuries wales suffered they can be proud of their world cup attempt. only thing tho, i thought they lacked was the welsh flair that was non existent. whats happened to the odd dummy pass, scissors move, sidestep or grubber kick over the top or between players.i never saw any of these. welsh rugby was never great for our power, but flair!

Disappointing but not gutting, we played well, they defended better, don't like to use injuries as an excuse but Cuthbert would surely be on the bench if Leigh Halfpenny, Hallam Amos and Scott Williams were fit, and now Liam Williams looks to be out. Need a proper winger because Cuthbert is really out of sorts. I would be tempted to try Matthew Morgan on the wing and perhaps even Tipuric at outside centre.

So much whinging that the Welsh were too incompetent to score a try with 2 men down for Australia. The Welsh were a quality team that night, they owned about 60 minutes of that game. I watched this game live, and I have watched it a few times. I wouldn't put the Welsh down, it was simply some supernatural, once in a decade, consistent preemptive tackling from the Australians. Quite a few times they broke from their line to shut down a player the moment he had received the ball. Not to mention all of the fortunate positioning that allowed them to hold up tries. Pure luck, really.

NihonH2ppy Yes but back then the squad would tire at around 70 mins. They've been through intense fitness training over the summer and it has showed. You didn't score any tries this time against a depleted team, and with players out of position. That's an improvement in my book.

  • @TuanNguyen-ur2cr

An improvement yes, but at the end of the day a wins a wins a win and improvements dont mean as much unless you win. Same thing with Australia constantly losing to the All Blacks, they're starting to win more now and thats what Wales needs to start doing. And in other news the worlds shittiest ref Joubert countinues to ruin Rugby test matches, this guy needs to be put down. Doesnt matter who is playing Joubert is a garbage ref, numerous wrong decisions in this game both ways yet again as per usual. Maybe Joubert also needs intense training in the rules of Rugby ;)

Oh well, Australia were totally outclassed in the superb pool game (RWC '19) with Wales and conceded 29 points to boot. Good to see them on the ascendancy and uprooting one of the most arrogant teams (justifiably) around. There's been plenty of games where Wales should've won but decisions went againat them. I think Australia will start fearing playing Wales now and this will give us an edge we've been sorely missing.

Australia were also missing Hooper, Horne, some other bloke and Folau wasnt 100% and you could clearly see it as the game went on, Folau usually eats the high ball like no other Rugby player could - fact, no better fullback in Rugby under the high ball than Folau, Rugby League skill sets are overpowered ;) Australia never looked right in this game from the get go and the decision to take the first scrum in their own half instead of going for an easy penalty kick into Wales's territory was the epitome of their night. But good teams do what all good teams do and that is win, an ugly win is still a win. Wouldn't be surprised if Pocock and Folau get rested against Scotland, no disrespect to tScotland but those two dont look right atm

WOW! I've just read the comments. What a very disgusting, biased and utterly nasty lot of and in many regards untrue comments from beaten Welsh people. Making up any excuse to deny praise for a praiseworthy opposition who in the end were just to unbreakable for the Welsh.

Australia defended like their lives depended on it. 13 possessed men on the park instead of 15. To be fair Wales took the game to the Aussies 🏉🏉🏉🏉. Top game!
