Amy Remeikis was by far the most coherent on the DSR (I am not surprised). Reality is the only "risk" in the next 5 years (we don't really have any "threat") is war over Taiwan, and the ADF is of no deterrence to, or consequence in, that event. This is about managing "risks" not "threats", but that is a harder sell when we are "shaping the narrative" (i.e propaganda) as it implies we could be more rational, independent in our own interest. We could be a genuine actor for peace and stability in the region - not a divisive advocate of "strategic competition".

Why are we still treating the South China Sea as if it is just off the coast of Australia? It is 4-5000km from Darwin. I can understand why the PRC is building up its defences; they are much more likely to be the subject of a threat to sea routes than Aus is. BTW, this concept of forward defence is a bit dodgy, leads to unfortunate Australian soldiers, sailors and aviators being killed a long way from home, usually as a minor player in a US or British conflict. Now we are being sold on the idea that 9 nuclear submarines will make the ADF "fit for purpose". Reminds me of the times when we were sold aircraft carriers and long-range bombers (F-111) because these were essential for defence. Honestly, in an age of inter-continental ballistic and nuclear missiles, all of this expense is probably a waste of our limited public resources. BTW, if the USA and UK are such strong allies, will they agree to decommission our nuclear subs and store the radioactive waste when the subs are withdrawn from service?

That's exactly the kind of lateral thought that needs to happen. An increase in defense spending is unavoidable, but what is absolutely avoidable is the waste created by indecision and constantly changing direction. We need ACTION. Some actions smaller and incremental (like you mentioned), along with bigger structural investments in capabilities (including the ability to produce systems domestically). We need oversight on defense contracts, who owns the IP and where the taxes are paid on profits. We need partnerships with our neighbors to build things together (equipment we can't produce alone or in sufficient quantities to be viable). We need to leverage money already spent on existing platforms to expand their capabilities. We need our leaders to use their effing brains and show some courage in leadership and the media to take a genuine interest in our nation, rather than the sound of their own voices and the cha ching of dollars being made by superficial analysis of important issues.

So it’s fine for the US to have a large military force, but not fine for China, now the World’s largest economy to build up by their defenses, in the face of US imperialism, constant war mongering and vile threats to go to war? The US far outspends China in it’s military budget every year by several multiples. Let’s understand when last China was actually involved in a war, then let’s count how many government coups, wars and invasions the US has been involved in over the past 80 years!!! The answer is every single one of them. Such hypocrisy! Australia needs to stop being the US’s flunkie! As an Aussie I’m totally embarrassed about our belligerent right wing geopolitical policies and anti China rhetoric. I'm really far left on almost all topics and have protested against US led wars (particularly Iraq 2) in the past. So not exactly a war hawk or right wing stooge. But just because the US have been badly behaved in the past, and China has largely focussed inward (with the exception of border disputes with India, Japan, Russia and now the South China Sea...... and invading Tibet...), the large build up of their assets in the South China Sea, the threatening rhetoric against Taiwan and their tacit support of Russian's invasion of Ukraine, is a very worrying trajectory! So my advice, don't look at the past 80 years, but look at the last 10. There's a marked change in the Xi era. What really pisses me off is that the right will use this to scare monger and win votes, and as a reflexive response, the left will characterise it as typical right wing hawkishness and racism and not want to do anything. IMO the threat is real, and we should prepare by increasing deterrence, ensuring energy independence (more renewables, fuel and gas reserves), increasing local manufacturing on vital goods and diversify our exports. The majority of these things don't involve the military, but some do.

Firstly it will make available accommodation for Australians living here and put a ceiling on rent. Secondly it will allow the RBA interest hikes to take a more immediate effect on reducing inflation. This is because the relative scarcity of properties will normalise due to less demand. big business are driving the push for more immigrants. This suits their purposes as it reduces their need to pay higher wages which are way overdue due to the previous governments active policy to deny pay rises. I don’t understand why commentators like yourselves are not driving this discussion?
