    I was detained and assaulted by two officers last month in Brisbane city after walking past and seeing they were fining two kids for riding scooters without helmets, I kept walking and saw two kids across the road hopping on a scooter as well, so I yelled across the road to tell them to wear helmets because cops were just down the road fining people, and out of nowhere they pulled up in an unmarked car, immediately told me I was “under arrest” without telling me what for. The first overweight officer tried to tackle me and despite being in shock and taken by surprise, I easily evaded him as he tripped over trying to grab me. The second one grabbed me from behind and proceed to shove my head into the ground whilst telling me I was under arrest for “raising my voice.” They fined both me and my girlfriend $413 for making other people aware of the law. It’s pretty obvious what they were doing and why they issued us both fines double the typical amount for “public disturbance.” You cannot convince me that the little good these people do when they can actually be bothered to do their job correctly is worth all of the corruption, the revenue raising, the bad tempers, the assaults, the gaslighting and the out right illegal activities the police involve themselves in is worth it in the end.

    A friend of mine was stalked for a year by her creepy uni lecturer. She called the police on multiple occasions. They said they couldn’t do anything unless he attacked her and that being parked outside of her house for hours several days a week wasn’t illegal. So she had to take matters into her own hands and called his wife and filled her in on what her husband was up to. He stopped stalking her after that, but the police weren’t going to do anything until she was attacked or murdered. I suppose the biggest difference between my friend and Barilaro is she’s not mates with the police minister...Pork Barilaro? Let’s call him what it really is Electoral Bribery Barilaro, and last time I tried to pay off a cop to skip the speeding fine I learned that any form of bribery is illegal...ipso facto John Barilaro is a corrupt member of the NSW parliament...

    @@jafrost1328 it’s a very interesting discussion indeed!! However, it is somewhat simplified by Mr Barilaro’s job as deputy premier. The job of a local member is to get funding for the needs of their electorate, which is their job. However, Mr Barilaro is also responsible for the entire state and all its electorates equally based on need within the state framework. By only selectively funding seats electorally important to the LNP he is failing his sworn oath to serve the state of NSW. Imagine if the chief of the Australian Medical Association was a Catholic and only espoused treatment for Catholics but no one else even though their job requires them to be impartial to all patient groups. What it means is Mr Barilaro is actively putting his party political interests before the welfare of the state, which is the opposite of his job description. And in regards to the other comment above, if we followed the deniers we’d likely have around 30,000 deaths vs our current 1,000. I don’t personally know how anyone who could willingly let 29,000 people die when it’s preventable. Part of the reason of having agencies separate was to have them bureaucratically in competition with each other, and for them to have partial oversight over each other - a circlejerk of who watches the watchers. Now with home affairs corruption, privileged behaviour and ultimately fascism will take root and spread as what were apolitical entities designed for national security determine that the party is the state and must be protected.

We're also deep in it but hopefully more Aussies will wake up before we end up with the government telling fakebook and twatter what to do then claiming they're a private company so they aren't involved and what they're doing isn't therefor a problem. Part of recognising Fascism is seeing the profitable merger of big business and government, when you look at that and top it off with the US 2020 election we're all in huge trouble. People always forget that "intelligence" agency workers aren't elected and they persist through administrations, if they become corrupted we're in a deep dark hole.

    This "illusion" is as impactful as stripping public education and Medicare of funding, actively hindering anti-bushfire efforts by the NSW Park Rangers by doing the same, and tanking the economy under the Liberal Party vs pretty much the opposite under Labor. Even if Labor is corrupt as you claim, and I will not deny the possibility, it is still working far, far more towards the public interest than the Liberal party does.

    @@Knowbody42I meant the public interest as I see it, not as a loosely defined thing that can be paid lip service to. I'm saying that Labor have consistently done more for the average Australian than the Liberal party have. I don't think you're wrong about limiting government reach, but I can't rightfully fully agree with it either. Yeah, the more power a position has, the more it attracts people that want to abuse it for their own gain. Unfortunately, making government too small would just shift the power elsewhere - probably to large corporations and billionaires that already have too much influence anyway, and then we'd wind up like America, working overblown hours for a pittance while our rights get eroded. I don't know what the answer is, and I don't enjoy that feeling at all. But giving Labor the reins again is an achievable first step - then I'll see if my assessment was accurate and figure things out from there.

  • @Knowbody42

    @Knowbody42

    It's always more difficult to take power away from government than to give government more power. And once government does have more power, even if the reason is ostensibly good and is used for good at first, it always seems to morph into something else and become corrupt, bureaucratic and more inefficient over time. So with that in mind, if I'm given the choice between a government that is useless and does nothing and a government that wants more power, I tend to go with the useless government. At least a useless government tends to leave us alone. But then, a useless government doesn't stop the slow march of increased government power. It only delays it, so that future generations will have to do the hard work of reigning in that power when they go too far. And it is inevitable that they will.

  • @DarthVella

    @DarthVella

    @@Knowbody42 Again, while I agree with your principle, I disagree that the ones currently in power are less guilty of it than the other choice. "A useless government tends to leave us alone" - that makes the Liberal government, who have cut public benefits and awarded overblown contracts and bailouts to their friends and donors, wasting your money and mine, worse than useless. The way I see it, a government is supposed to be a group made of members of the community, in charge of spending the community's money (in the form of taxes) in a way that best benefits the community. That's what guides my vote - whichever individual or party best adheres to that. Even though, as both of us have said, a body that powerful does present a tempting target for corruption and misuse of power.

    Because the Labor party always ends up supporting this bullshit. Labor and Liberals want the same thing they just disagree which colour tie should be in control. But don't take my words for it let's have a gander at good old Kev's proposal from 07: The first step in ensuring a clear focus on these issues and a genuine whole of government response is the creation of a Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Maintaining the integrity of maritime and national borders, as well as protecting Australians at home is an increasingly demanding responsibility of national government. New threats have emerged that demand a rethink of our nation’s strategic and tactical response. The Federal Government saw the importance of combining critical security agencies under one command in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics, yet it has avoided the difficult decisions in restructuring its own departments to provide a similar single structure for homeland security. The Howard Government’s continuing insistence on splitting these functions over a number of departments invites overlap, wastage, confusion and missed opportunities. The logic of those who argue that civilian security should be administered in separate departments responsible to various ministers is reminiscent of those who argued forty years ago, that Australia should maintain separate Ministers for Army, Navy, Air Force and Supply. No one today would disagree with the decision in the early 1970’s to create a Defence Department with a single Minister for Defence. The same clear sighted vision for non military security agencies is required today. Interdepartmental committees are not a substitute for a single minister with clear responsibility for a Department of Homeland Security providing a whole of government response to these challenges. Labor’s Department of Homeland Security will encompass the key responsibilities of responding to terrorism, intelligence gathering, border security, a national coastguard, transport security, federal policing, critical infrastructure protection, as well as incident response and recovery capability. The following agencies would form the basis of Labor’s Department of Homeland Security: The Coastguard - including the Border Protection Command Office of Transport Security Customs Australian Federal Police and Protective Services (AFPPS) Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) AUSTRAC CRIMTRAC AUSCHECK Australian Crime Commission (ACC) The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) The Criminology Research Council (CRC) Emergency Management Australia (EMA) Protective Security Coordination Centre (PSCC)

It says POLICE on it. That is the Police Station. I like the Police, says Peter. They help you. Yes, says Jane. The Police help you. Without wishing to denigrate the institutions of the police and education, it is clear from the perspectives of class and ethnicity that the police and schools may have very different meanings for, say, Aboriginal children, black South Africans, African-Americans, or black Britons living in inner-city areas, where the police, for example, may not be seen so simply as ‘good’ but as agents supporting the dominant white middle class."

You do know that all this information, if it’s true only damages our minds and makes us worry a lot more! Judge me for being ignorant but I was happier before college/university kids started educating the world with their knowledge. It’s their programming to begin with. Facebook - University created Algorithm in search engines - University created Invasion of privacy doesn’t exist anymore, no privacy means no invasion. Vegans - need I say more? Everyone’s a professional until proven wrong. Do you know why we have a lost history and we have to dig up the past to unlock its secrets? Because our ancestors knew to hide it so the world can be happier. Dragging the past with us don’t make us better, it mentally destroys any hope or imagination of a better world. And now we hide froM reality in our music our choice of movies, and now we pick the faults in movies and say that’s wouldn’t happen that way, you’re missing the point of why a movie is made, to entertain not inform. Now look at all the crap, and we say 1984 is happening, it only happens when we accept it into our lives. To be honest, the scared people are the ones doing the damage.

    What about the enforced isolation, its called seclusion when someone is locked in a room (medi-hotel) and cannot leave. You get to stay until you are cleared by the PSI test & may even be there over a false positive. An ankle monitor & home detention is the humane response if you are going down that path. Isolation cell time much?

    Repurpose “V For Vendetta” movie theme and do another one like this. The movie is perfect material to contrast and parallel against this.
