Спорт

Aussie marathon runner Liam Adams thought he had secured his place at the Paris Olympics, but due to a new ruling that will see the final 10 out of 80 spots filled with 'universality places', he's missed out on competing.

So sad, he’s had such a hard run throughout his career never getting any sponsors or funding. Deserves to be there more than anyone

More than anyone? How so? Didn’t run under the qualifying time so very fortunate to even be considered for a spot on the starting line.

Olympic spots are given to the fastest runners, NOT to the runner with the most financial problems.

Maybe he should run a bit faster next time. Tough to say.

🤦‍♀🤦‍♀Gosh poor Liam , seems like he's just been facing a never-ending uphill battle for his entire running career, though certainly he's not the only athlete to do so! Fortunately marathoners have a lot of courage to hang in there, though he must be feeling he's about at the end of his tether!! Sending best best wishes Liam!!!🙋‍♀

Interesting! The Swedish olympic committee needs a marathon runner to be top 15 in the world. This means that the runner have to break the Swedish and Europen records just to get a place in the Olympic marathon.

Kind of sad a world class athlete like Liam Adam’s has to juggle his job along with training…

seems like a lot of assumptions were being made, why didn't someone pick up the phone and ask what the ACTUAL process would be. I probably feel more for some of kenyan blokes running way below the qualifying time who won't get to go.

That's what I'm thinking too. In previous years they've expanded the field above 80 so that'll probably happen. They're making a fuss before world atheltics have said anything about the rankings.

He’s ranked 74th in the world. It’s meant to be top 80, therefore he was deserving to go

@@user-gh2jy7yd4w Not quite that simple, there's literally 20 Ethiopian guys who have this year run a quicker time than Liam, his time had him 222nd in the world last year

Why doesn't he get in based on universality? Wouldn't he be the only Australian participating?

no, its from under represented countries through the whole of athletics, the countries without an athlete competing at the Olympics for Athletics can select the top ranking athlete FROM THEIR COUNTRY to either participate in the 100, 800 or marathon irregardless of world ranking. Since Australia has an abundance of athletes competing in Athletics Liam does not qualify as a universality.

So now the worlds premiere sporting event, the Olympic Games has turned into a WOKE FESTIVAL for DEI contestants. Next we will be having men competing against women in women's races........oh hang on a minute.........shameful.

The problem seems to be that he thought he'd made the time required but if he knew, he'd race again and take another crack at the qualifying time. It's a problem for the athlete who's not going to get to the podium that they race for a time to qualify and not blow up going too hard... but in this scenario (that's happened before) you get the feeling that they'd have liked a chance to blow up giving everything. He didn't know until too late. The thing to remember is that he would always have wanted to give his best performance in Paris - not qualifying - and he didn't race again in order to prepare.

@@har234908234 Maybe it was a bit arrogant of him to assume he was on the Olympic team and therefore not run another race to earn the actual qualifying time. By the way, I am NOT on the USA Olympic team for Paris, but I am NOT on KZread whining about it! LOL.
