By eliminating the tail rotor, safety in the air and on the ground is significantly increased. Likewise, having no tail rotor enables the contra-rotating rotors to have more power to provide lift.

The down wash is also traveling straight down instead of spiraling. By having rotors spinning in opposite direction it eliminates the swirl component of the downwash, adding to lift.

Also, with contra-rotating blades, retreating blade stall is cancelled out, eliminating the thing that limits the top speed of most helicopters.

Thought they'd folded since then, but glad to see they haven't. Hopefully at some point they'll get the money to build a prototype and see if it works as well as they think it will.

I think that this is just a mockup. The military usually wants to see mockup of the aircraft, then they decide which 2 bids to choose to award prototype funding to, then those two prototypes are tested to see if they meet requirements, and the one that best fulfills requirements is the one that gets chosen for production contract.........in theory.

I hope they are not competing against Lockheed raider X attack helicopter. Side-by-side pilot capabilities is really not In issue to worry about because flight controls can be switched from pilot to pilot even if they’re sitting front and back positions. With the wings that’s probably gonna carry extra fuel and the two prop fans along with that Wide ass whale tail of a tail is going to cause unnecessary air drag that will Limit hi speed capabilities. Lockheed Raider X has a more suitable aerodynamic slipstream airframe for high-speed capabilities. No,I do not like the Raider X wide ass whale tail as well. I still believe that Boeing’s Comanche is a better platform for a dual blade system that has a way better stealth Version of a Attack helicopter concept. This is one time that I really think that Boeing should I put their hat in the game. I really think Lockheed and Boeing should really hook up on this one. Hope you’re listening Penny potluck. @@MasterChief-sl9ro I've been a helicopter mechanic for over a decade. I guess me and all the engineers at Lockheed, Sikorsky, Boeing, Airbus, and every other major manufacturer is dumber than you and your videogame/movie experience. Multirotor drones do work well but only for smaller rotor blades. The way they are controlled are completely different. Drones control thrust by varying the speed of a rotor, on larger systems the inertia of the rotors is too big to overcome. Also, drones fly for a matter of minutes, helos fly for hours. While Multirotor systems are very cool and are promising. They definitely don't beat traditional helicopters when you are trying to fight a war or do real work. Keep playing your video games til you get old enough to try the real thing

I had 2 Apaches hovering 300 yards from me at 100ft AGL last week and didn't know they were there until I looked up. And the loudest rotor system in the military is the mv22 osprey, which is the closest thing to what you describe yet shakes building the farthest away. The f-35 and harrier are even louder but at a much higher tone.

Not the same Kind. The Flettner had 2 Rotorheads side by side with each having 2 Blades contrarotating made them not touch each other. Well seen in the Flettner Fl 265. A great Design because it was not so complex like the one KAMOV was using. Anyway, it limited the Blades per Head to 2. And it wasn't very silent. Some Ultralight Plane/Choppers are still using it Today.
