Aurora loot is not for the faint of heart | The Long Dark

Ойындар

This is what can happen when you take Hinterland up on its offer of loot that's only available during an aurora. This incident happened after Astrid found a nice clothing cache in Desolation Point and a big cache of ammo plus a rifle in Coastal Highway. That potential loot comes with a risk, though -- encounters with supercharged wildlife which no longer fear fire.
Also, take note of when the bear starts to charge, something I failed to do while trying to find the door to the cabin. Does that seem further away than usual? It did in retrospect, but maybe I underestimated just how quickly the bear was closing in. Find the full video here: • Road to 500, Day 261: ... . From the August 12, 2023, stream at / trooperbari .
The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. store.steampowered.com/app/30...

Very fortunate considering that a flare will not scare an Aurora bear. I learned this the hard way.

Agreed. Too many people forget just how bold aurora-fied predators can get. I'm sometimes guilty of it myself. It seemed like the bear started its charge from further out than usual, too, but I might've just been distracted.

@@trooperbari I think what happened is that when you went behind the house, he lost visibility and decided to charge based on that. The AI might've thought you were running away (similar to how in the day you can lose a wolf trail based on scent and sight). They do a yearly AI update to the animals in this game. I think it's their way of keeping us on our toes.

It is spooky how long the aurora effects last, even after death. The fur and eyes continuing to glow still have me suspicious they're playing possum and will jump me the second I turn my back.

Oh, no worries there. Mashing the R button before and after firing the flare gun is a reflex at this point. I've seen too many TLD players forget to reload and suffer the consequences.

Sometimes this can cause problems because even if you have bullets for the flare gun, it automatically closes the cap of the flare gun while it is empty and I think I am reloading it.

@@Agent_265 Thankfully, I've yet to run into that issue. Maybe I've been lucky, maybe my paranoia has kept it from getting past me. Regardless, it's a good reminder to also check the hammer's position before firing (or trying to fire).

Pretty ballsy. If I was playing it would have devolved into the bear chasing me around the cabin in a circle like it was a Benny Hill sketch.

Thanks. There are some TLD players who have the composure to sidestep a charging bear and do a "bear dance". I am not one of them. I've never been able to make a charging bear miss, so either it goes down or I do.

and that's why before doing Signal Void and finding the Transponder Caches I went to Blackrock to get the Ballistic Vest. Saved my life from Aurora predators so many times

That's a solid idea. If you're going to voluntarily put yourself in harm's way, extra protection makes a lot of sense. Of course it involves going to Blackrock, which is its own kettle of fish, but it's about making an investment in your survival, right?

@@trooperbari between the entrance to Blackrock and the Prison where the vest is you're gonna find 2, maybe 3 Timberwolf packs, which is survivable, if you bring enough Marine Flares with you. Besides Signal Void and the caches I'd recommend bringing the BV with you for Bleak Inlet, Blackrock (when you come back to loot it thoroughly) and Zone of Contamination. Timberwolves and Poison Wolves are a pain in the ass too, especially if you play some extra hard Stalker/Interloper hybrid like me

@@reaperluke3518 I've found the vest before -- for me the question is whether the juice is worth the squeeze. That's a lot of weight to manage that could potentially go to other loot and/or sprint capacity. Everything's a trade-off. As long as a strat keeps you alive -- whether it's stand and fight, sneak and hide, or some other third thing -- it's a good'un.

@trooperbari i don't look at the vest as a permanent part of my kit, its just a mini jug-suit for bear/moose hunting that basically removes the risk of dying to a struggle if you pair it with the right clothes. Also makes timberwolves manageable as you only lose condition to bleed

  • @trooperbari

    @trooperbari

    4 ай бұрын

@@jamescr101 That's fair. I tend to be selective in my moose or bear hunts; if there isn't a clear hiding spot or place I can snipe from range, I generally don't engage. That's not always the case, of course, as accidents and bad decisions creep into every playthrough. I just tend to err on the side of greater safety and mobility (and definitely not because I'm already loaded down with hoarded loot).

I literally got mauled to 10% health by wolves and only managed to stagger back indoors at 3% health, for the sake of a single freaking stick the first time I went aurora loot hunting.
