    Guys thanks so much for providing this content with Wlfried, he absolutely took us to school and dropped some interesting science on this topic. I’m eating this enlightening information up which to me is eye or in this case ear opening. I’ve recently reconfigured my setup to Auro 3D specs and wow what a difference. Using the Auro up-mixer on the notoriously bad Atmos mixes really makes a huge difference. I turned off all of my bed layer speakers and tested Aqua man and other movies and was pretty upset at the piss poor performance from the Atmos format. Thank you to Stop the FOMO and Patrick from Grobitv for that demo as well. Once again guys hats off to you for providing us with this type of access with the creator of, IMO, the better of all the formats. Please bring Wilfred back for another session.👍🏾

    Thank you for this very interesting video. I live in Belgium, I have a 13.2 installation with a Denon AVC-X6700 and Monitor Audio Loudspeakers. I've placed the loudspeakers according to the AURO 3D recommandations. I must say it sounds really A-MA-ZING! Auromatic works very well to and I "rediscover" some recordings with Auromatic. It sounds very natural. Congratulations and many thanks to Wilfried

    I have an 7.1.4 setup with front and rear height channels angled at my main mlp but while standing up not sitting. This puts the direct sound above my head. I also have the side surround speakers elevated the same height as my front and rear height speakers but angled directly at my ears while sitting. I run every movie with the Auro 3D upmixer set at 14 and talk about a sound bubble or immersive sound, it’s amazing. I would highly recommend you all trying it.

    Joe, you mentioned (around the 33-minute timestamp) that you're unable to hear "outside your room" when listening to immersive sound. So I understood you saying that your speaker positioning is the limit of the sense of spatial depth. (Please correct me if I misunderstood) Try this experiment: Go to John Wick 3, at the beginning of the Contential Assault sequence, right where they drop the needle on the record...in a system with a great immersive processor and properly setup & calibrated speakers, as the view changes from the weapons vault to the hotel lobby, you can "hear" the space size change *dramatically* . I'd be interested if you'd share your thoughts afterward. Thanks!

    I think this kinda speaks to a cathedral effect . The room grows with the depth of a room reverberations . I’m not sure how well this is accounted for in sound mixing . For instance sound objects in different environments reflect sound differently sound objects in say a submarine may not work as intuitive as in open environments. I guess that would be artist based master; what ever the master is trying to invoke with the sound and characterize with the sound object is correct in nature. From that point it is whether the sound master style is listener appreciated or not.

    hello. very informative stuff. just started watching many videos on youtube regarding auro3D. seems like a good option to improve as has been stated "bad atmos". My question is, if going to a 10.1 set up....where do the rear surround and height speakers go? from all the images i've seen it is a little confusing. Typical 5.1 set up places the side surrounds in the back, several ffet away from MLP, if you have the, then the heghts right above them. However, i have also seen were the sides are about 110-120 degrees behind MLP and heights are above...do the point INTO the room, or towards MLP? So basically means there are NO speakers at all along rear wall? any pointers/tips would be appreciated. thanks for the content.....

    Set your rear surrounds about 5-6 feet apart from each other. Angle the left rear surround towards the right front and right rear towards the left front. Put your front height speakers directly above yours front L and R. Then put in direct line from the right front height to the right rear height and the same with the left. This will cause the dome of sound you’re looking for.

    Did Auromatic come up in the post show? Was disappointed that it did not come up at all during the live stream. I do like Auro-3D but unless something changes soon, it is just not going to be a thing in the states. Where Auro could find some success here is with it’s up-mixing. Would have loved to have had one of my 3 questions re: up-mixers asked during the live stream. Other then that, loved the guest. He made a strong case for his tech.

    Might depend on your receiver. If you also want Atmos to work, Denon and Marantz recievers need the Auro 3D rear heights to be at the rear above where the 7.1 rear speakers would be. Or at least that is how they are mapped. You could always try moving them and comparing

    Did you ever find a definitive answer to this? From what I can tell, it looks like the optimal Auro layout does not involve rear heights. Rather it involves surround heights directly above the surround speakers. In which case, my thought would be that you would be well served to bring your side speakers to ear level and mount speakers directly above them (pointing towards the main listening position). I haven't tried this yet though and its just based on what I have been reading. I would be interested to know what approach you decided to take and how you like it!

    Why does Wilfred say 5 bed layer speakers (9.1) are better than 7 bed layer speakers (11.1 layout). Wouldn’t the 7 bed layer speakers make it more easy for panning the objects in a car chase in the movies? For Atmos setups, I found the it was more immersive with the 7.1 than the 5.1 layout in the bed layer. The car chases appear to start from the front stage to the side surrounds and then to the rear surrounds. Won’t the same principal apply for Auro 3d?

    The reasoning is for undetected spear emersion. At 90 degrees axis, ear is sensitive so sounds right next to it and so side pairs seem to sound obvious. The idea is to keep everything uniform in a dome. He believes delays and distance won't make up for the obvious feel. Surrounds at 100 - 120 degrees feel less obvious

    Welcome Wilfried. Congrats on Auro 3D, I'm completely sold. This is long shot, in case an expert can answer: I'm setting up the Denon 8500 to use Auro 3D 13.1 as well as Atmos. I'll have 7.1 base channels. The amp says I should have the surround/rear heights setup as Rear Heights (because Atmos won't work if they're called Surround Height), but if I were only doing Auro 13.1, Auro would prefer they were called Surround Heights and placed above the Side Surround speakers. So I will call the Rear Heights, because I have to, but where should I put them (for best Auro results)? 1) Above the Rear Speakers (at about 150 degrees from the front centre) because that's what they're called 2) Above the Side Speakers (at about 100/110 degrees) because although I've called them Rear Heights, Auro will still work best if they're placed as Side Surround Heights 3) In between options 1 & 2 (but then not directly above any base channel)

    If you want to run the best Auro3D set-up, they recommend side surrounds heights(directly above your left and right surround) but that will not work with atmos. If you want the universal layout for it to work with both atmos and Auro3D, use rear heights directly above back surrounds. I have the second option, universal layout so my speakers work with any format! Hope that helps.

  • @Triggaaar

    @Triggaaar

    @@CptaiNPogo Thanks for the reply. I've built my room and allowed for switching between rear heights, for multiple options, but right now I've got them directly above the side surrounds. I'm not sure it's right to say it 'will not work with atmos'. The speakers are in line with front L&R, and behind the listeners, just not quite as far back as Atmos would like. I see the pros of the option you chose, but it's not quite as ideal of Auro 3D. Either way is a compromise, but I will do lots of testing before deciding on final positions.

  • @CptaiNPogo

    @@Triggaaar When you are in the amp assign menu, if you have it chosen for LR side surround heights, those speakers will not receive any information from the receiver if you’re watching atmos. It will be completely silent. If you don’t believe me, look at the bottom where it says “support format:” side heights will only be auro3D and DTS:X. All your other speakers will work and play sound with atmos, just not those side height surrounds.

  • @Triggaaar

    @@CptaiNPogo You misunderstand captain - you call the whatever your amp needs them to be called (in my case, rear heights). I've place my rear heights directly above my side surrounds at 110 degrees horizontal angle). Both Auro 3D and Atmos use them. They're exactly where they should be for Auro, and little bit forward and to the side of where Atmos would like them.

  • @CptaiNPogo

    @CptaiNPogo

    @@Triggaaar so you’re designating these speakers as rear heights but you’re going to place them above your side surrounds(essentially side surround heights location). You will get sound on atmos and auro but now the sound will not be 3 dimensionally correct. Instead of a bullet going from front to back, you’ll hear it go front to back sides. If you’re fine with hearing sound not exactly where it’s supposed to go then that set-up works but I don’t see why you wouldn’t put your rear heights where they should, above the back surrounds?

I wonder if screen or screens that have dolby atmos have a baffle wall behind the screen. 38 miles seems like a gamble if it has no baffle wall or even THX it won't draw me to getting on coach. I may as well stay at home. THX professional in my own home, professional THX cinema version.
