I loved Aunt Bee! Her character reminded me of my own great grandmother. The pickles are from an episode where her and a neighbor lady were entering a contest at the fair for best pickles. Aunt Bee's were sooo salty that no one could stand to eat them and the race was on to get rid of all those jars of rotten pickles before the fair. Funny show!

We have been to Siler City, NC. On the show, whenever she went to visit family, she would say she was going to Siler City. The story goes that Andy and Ron Howard went out to her house to visit her after the show ended. She would not let them in. Her house was recently on the market; it had been completely renovated. Andy also died in NC, near the Outer Banks. He was buried I believe the same day. If you go to Mount Airy, NC, it’s like going to Mayberry. Mount Airy is where Andy was born. They have a wonderful museum there about the show. You can tour the city in a police car like on the show. They even have Opie’s candy store.

RFD stood for Rural Farm District. Yes, Frances Bavier was difficult to work with and in contrast to their on-screen chemistry, she and Andy Griffith did not get along when the cameras weren't rolling! She called Andy Griffith not long before her death to reconcile. In the early 1950's she also played the mother of Jerry Lewis in the classic Lewis & Martin film "The Stooge." Also contrary to her wholesome image as Aunt Bee, IRL Bavier was a chain smoker, which undoubtedly contributed to her declining health in her later years. In the 1986 Andy Griffith Show reunion movie "Return to Mayberry" that you referenced, Bavier was not healthy enough to reprise her role as you mentioned, besides being retired from acting, so it was written into the movie that Aunt Bee had passed away, there is a scene in which Andy visits her grave.

I remember her and enjoyed her appearances, but didn't watch the show that much. I DO remember Eve Arden. She was the real deal, an honest to Pete big time Hollywood movie actress, and had roles with the best of them. In later years, when TV became a thing, she was Connie Brooks on Our Miss Brooks, a very popular show. Jeff Chandler was her love interest on that show. He was a HUNK!

Perhaps this will help shed some light on why Frances was the way she was...keep in mind she was born and raised in New York City and was an known actress of stage and screen reduced to taking a job playing the part of a country bumpkin... here in her own words... Bavier confessed in an interview with Bill Ballard for Carolina Camera that "it is very difficult for an actress ... to create a role and to be so identified that you as a person no longer exist and all the recognition you get is for a part that is created on the screen."[7]...she wanted to be recognized for more than just playing Aunt Bee...she was also lonely felt unappreciated and unloved...she died all alone...

hers was a lonely life in the end. some people just aren't people persons. i dare say she probably exhibited some mental disorders towards the latter part, it's just not normal to be a recluse.

I have heard that she probably had some form of dementia or mental disorder in the later years of her life.
