August 1962 - Playtown Park, Springfield Township, Delaware County

I don't know much about Playtown Park but my dad shot this in 1962 before I was even born. It looks like a fun place.

I was there in the 1960's - family fun was so easy then.

Oh, many good memories there. I grew up in Springfield roughly 4 1/2 blocks from Playtown Park, walking distance. We'd go there as a family outing in the summer during the 1950's. I hadn't realized it was still there in 1962 - I guess I was too "sophisticated" for it by then as that was the year I graduated from high school. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this! When I was little I used to beg my parents to take us there when we drove out to Collingdale to visit my grandparents. I think I remember the track with the cars on it but otherwise my only real memory is seeing Sally Starr in person at the park.

I never saw Sally Starr there but I do have fond memories of that place and it was kind of a shame they tore it down if you think about it because all these decades later people would still take little kids there if they could

I grew up in Clifton Heights. I remember they had some coin-operated thing where a chicken would come out behind glass and do a trick. Loved this place.

My sister and I grew up a few miles away in Collingdale. Very fond memories of the times we would get to go. We loved Playtown and were very sad to see it go.

There was a kids amusement Park on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park before Macy's Department Stor complex was built in the 1960s. I have photos in my bedroom in a plastic bag. Today in NYC, there is only one in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Yep I have some fond memories there except I hated it when my mom would take me in that spook house... do you remember that ride that went through that dark spook house with the creepy things jumping out ... I think my favorite was the cups and saucers

I remember the miniature golf course at the front entrance the ferris wheel and the big tall statue of the guy in the front. I was just a little kid when I went here and loved this place. I also remember that after the park closed that the golf course and ferris wheel were still open for one last season. It was such a treat to go there for the day.

Wow that's really cool.... I was there later.... do you remember what year it closed ? Do you remember other places in the area... no one in my family remembers this bar that my dad liked to go in that was on Norwinden and Baltimore Pike... sat slightly back from Baltimore Pike . It had a sign with the face of one of those dogs with the big droopy eyes and mouth and it said Wunderhaus .. inside the bar somewhere on the wall being in the doghouse . but it had another name and I can't remember now what it was .... also do you remember the DeVille Diner on Baltimore Pike on the same side as the bazaar but on the other side of Bishop Avenue ? I think it also was called the Fireside Hearth ... it had Stone steps... maybe made out of in laid slate going to the glass doors

I don't remember Rex Morgan but I remember the rest of them.... Wee Willie Webber also on the radio... real friendly guy . Back around maybe the year 2000 ? ... I was at a banquet one evening in the Philadelphia area and I could not believe when I walked by a table and there was my childhood hero Gene London.... I absolutely could not believe it .... I got to chat with him and he was still handsome and kind .

I have great memories of this place. We hung out at the arcade, playing pinball. My brother, Chris was good friends with Ken Wareham, who commented on this video a few months back. Does anyone else remember when local celebrity Sally Star made a personal appearance there?

I actually just got done looking at a bunch of your vids . You said you later moved to Drexel Hill.... the picnics and the outings in the backyard look like Drexel Hill , sort of the area behind Bishop Avenue and Burmont Road... or over near Shadeland Avenue .

it may have in '71, but I think earlier. Before Kohl's it was a Clover store which was a branch of the Strawbridge & Clothier. It went up, and the Strawbridge on 420 went down the same year. I was born in 59, and my friends and I hung-out in the ruins of play town, 71&72
