'Definitive History'
Definitive history, splinters of foundation,
Weaving of our horrors into pig silks full of glory holes
And fabrics of contrition.
Curtsey to your betters,
Who picked you for a nothing, tried to knock out your stuffing,
Bold in their beers, straw between their ears.
The same smug expression, same false cheer,
Same air of predation -
“Stranger welcome…” just not here, just not here, just not here.
All men are mice, all men are mice, it doesn’t pay to be nice,
Take all before you.
Definitive history.
Pay respect to the common folk, it’s an obligation,
Let common sense commandeer you,
Take up all the hard work,
Steer your thoughts in a circle jerk.
Make abominable children, vicious little animals,
Reared up like pit bull dogs
By the ordinary Australians…
O one for the mother, one for the dad,
One for treasurer, one for the plasma screen, and don’t forget
The developer’s dream,
A tumour for them all in the belly of the sprawl -
Definitive history.
Two young men took a Chinese girl
Early one Thursday morning,
Brick to her head and a cord round her neck,
Hands on her body…
Drowned her in a bathtub, rolled her in a sheet,
Dumped her in the river,
Tragedy crowed the newspaper letters…
“In our own backyard!”
In our own backyard,
Oh how could it be with all we’ve taught them?
O one for the mother, one for the dad,
One for treasurer, one for the plasma screen, and don’t forget
The developer’s dream,
A tumour for them all in the belly of the sprawl
O one for the mother, one for the dad,
One for treasurer, one for the plasma screen, and don’t forget
The developer’s dream,
A plot to bury them all at the edge of the sprawl -
Definitive history.

Such a haunting melody.. Those lyrics are ripe Love it
Lyrics, music & video. This is a masterpiece of beautiful melancholic pop!
Not so far removed from Moo You Bloody Choir. The sacred essence that is Augie March. So bloody glad that you are back from your journey.
So beautiful, guys. Haunting sounds, old-time sounding, poetic, unique.. all the things I love about your art.
Worldly lyrics. Haunting...
welcome back, we missed you
Quite a bleak capture of Melbourne? Quite haunting indeed. Very interesting. Thanks
Glenn you know what you are talking about and so do us few. You will appreciated after your time and it pains me to say. Thanks for the memes.
Awesome, loved it
just shows you can’t keep a good idea (or band) down, this is fucking brilliant, such affection in the arrangement, perversely tender in his observation of the inescapable... (John Williams should slip this into his set and get them to sing along)
So good...
Amazing. Congratulations!
Beautiful
Nice work
Gorgeous!
Thank you for this beautiful song, with deep lyrics, far away from shit songs of today. I tried to translate all lyrics into french but there are a lot of hidden references about society. Is it accurate to think that the words "O one for the mother, dad, treasurer and plasma" is an australian catchword about making children? Then could someone explain to me what they mean by "the developer's dream"? Is it something like architect of society? thank you

about ten years ago our conservative treasurer urged us to have a third child (average families were dropping to below two children ) in essence to support the aging population into the future. The developers dream refers to all the policies aimed at economic growth, development of new housing estates, consume, consume, consume plasma screens, air conditioning systems and the rest while forgetting to create a decent, just and sustainable society. That's my take on it anyway. I love Augie March

I'm currently playing the Haven's Dumb CD and this song just came on. I'm reminded how poignantly beautiful this tune is; so much so that'll be it for another few months before I can listen again.
This song references the 2009 murder of Zhang 'Tina' Yu in Hobart.
