Aughra Explained (The Dark Crystal)

Aughra stands at three and a half feet tall, a wizened, ram horned, elderly looking being though in her actions she proves youthful and presents herself as near ageless.
She is ornery, capricious and, maternal.
The most striking feature of the wize aughra is her one eye, which is detachable, and her two blinds.
According to the official encylcopedia, aughra is in fact the embodiment of thra, almost, an avatar, if you will.
Similar to a nature god, she is thra. Inscrutable and gruff, but wise and caring.
The origin of aughra is shrouded in mystery, though she is old enough to know the world of thra prior to the gelfling race and, she is old enough to remember thra prior to the mystics and skeksis becoming separate beings after the great conjunction.
To quote aughra directly.
“Of the race of Aughra, I, Aughra, am alone, the first and last. Born from the need for rocks and trees for an eye to see the world. The wind blew and the blind trees sang and roots twisted in the dark rocks and the roots sang and the rocks cracked and I was Aughra. This is my song. The rocks will me to be their eye; the roots willed me to be their eye. Blind rocks that felt the heartbeat of the World; blind trees swaying in the breathing of the wind made to view for them all the shapes of the World. Slowly, slowly the roots split the rock and I was free. The First Age of Aughra was of innocence and it was long. Then it was Aughra and the race of the Gelfling who shared the World. The Gelfling sang and danced for the joy of their lives, and I was part of their joy.- Aughra”

I remember Aughra freaking me out as a child what with that detachable eye. But the observatory amazed me. It was like an old world meets new world (technologically speaking) design. I like that stuff.
Wow..didn't know she was 3.5 ft tall. That means that all of these great characters were small in stature (especially the gelflings & podlings). Big things do come in small packages!

There is an official series that talks about her son. The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths, Vol. 1 Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal Volume 2: Creation Myths
Aughra is my favorite character from Dark Crystal. I knew that she came from the rock. I remember reading that in the Encyclopedia. I didn't know she had a son. That's pretty cool. I wonder if they will expound on that in the Netflix series. I have a cautious excitement about the series.

Interesting. I would like to see a movie or Netflex get behind a production of when the crystal cracked and the Sketsis appeared.

As I grew up, i noticed a resemblance between her and Oprha. In fact that was how I remembered her name. No malice intended, it was just connective memory name tag. LoL

I'd imagine not, as it's likely set before her time, but, I'm sure if they can, they'll rework something of a similar character in to it. Mainly because it's a stand out creature in most people's minds

There are quite a few fizgigs in the new series, even one with a eye patch like a pirate,
I want to see a StarFox movie from Nintendo and the Henson company. it can be done!
Archaia Comics made a 3 part comic series where tales the time from the birth of the world to Aughra's birth, to the arrival, rule and division of the Urskeks, as well her son. The artwork was done by Brian Froud, the concept artists for the Dark Crystal itself.

Any chance we can see a Mr. H on Warhammer 40K lore? Theres a TON of badass stuff about it and only 2 youtube channels have covered. They don't have that flavor that Mr. H has. There is really cool shit like dudes being cybernetically connected to giant titans and it becomes severally addicting to them. I would love to see this lore!

In the new Netflix series the first episode says that the Skeksis showed up and enticed Aughra with matters of the stars and built her an orrery. So confused, I thought it was the Urskeks?!?

I was told by another video that her son dies in her arms.....yeah that is pretty messed up.
Oh my god I didn't know that? So what was her son name and what did he look like? and was he as but ugly as his mother? also who was his dad? And what happen to him did he just leave his mother or was he killed by someone or something?

Raunip, he was sort of a Loki figure, a trickster. But not evil. He tried to tell the Gelflings not to trist the Skeksis, but they didn't believe Him. He went on some quest, I think. Sorry, I can't Remember more. This is from the comics.
As long as they treat it better than Thundercats Roar, I'll be happy with it.

What does lore mean ? I could find out myself but whoever tells me can forever be in the knowledge that they helped some sad muppet on the other side of the world

Nope, Netflix has done nothing wrong to her or anyone else in lore. They know what to do with a franchise.
