Audio Technica AT-LP3 playing vinyl using Mobile Fidelity StudioPhono

Музыка

This is a video I made of the Audio Technica AT-LP3 turn table playing a vinyl. The song is Peaches from the In the Valley Below - The Belt album. For this I used a Mobile Fidelity StudioPhono preamp and recorded the song using a Creative SoundBlaster X-FI HD. The audio recording in the video is the actual vinyl recording directly fed from the preamp to the DAC - I also added some clips of it from a Sony RX100 iii for entertainment purposes.

I added a vinyl mat and LP Gear Vessel Microline cart with a Vincent PHO-8 preamp. It sound like any other high end turntable with these upgrades. I did change the plastic feet for a solid aluminum one inch feet with rubber isolators. That really keeps vibrations out along with the vinyl mat (white for my white TT).

Wow! That preamp is about £300 isn’t it? More than the turntable! Did you really notice a difference? And do you guys know what cartridge/stylus this one is? I’m thinking of starting with upgrading that to the Orfono 2M Red but just wondering if there would be much difference. Where did you guys get the feet from? Cheers! :-)

@@mrjaffa1013 I have the LP Gear Vessel A3SV microline cartridge which works oh so well. Someone says it's an entry level, but what does that mean? I has a speed control built in, option to use any phono preamp, and add better feet. It uses an identical headshell to the Denon DP-300, so I ordered the silver one to match the arm on the white model. Although you cannot add an acrylic platter, you can add an acrylic mat (similar effect). It's as cheap or expensive as your sound requirements. You can use virtually any cartridge with it for excellent results.

I'm confused. The RCA inputs on the X-FI HD are dedicated for phono, which will add further RIAA equalization on top of the RIAA added by the StudioPhono. Is there a way to bypass it?

  • @polawo

Ah yes so the X-FI HD has both phono input and normal Line In RCA input. So I plugged the phono preamp into the X-FI HD's Line In instead of its phono input. Hope that helps :-)

Only styluses I know that works on the LP60 are the AT3600L and the LPGear option. If you want to play around with different carts/stylus you need a table with adjustable counterweight and 1/2" mounting hardware. H4 headshell mount is the easiest and most common.

just sold my vintage 1974 direct drive pioneer pl71 TT. getting older, me. as i age was looking for fully automated TT. i was familiar with at91r cartage as i used it on my vintage TT along with at95e. both track at 2 grams. thats kwhere you want to be. tracking at 2 grams. some receivers have good phono stages, some dont. one of units has no phono hookup so i had to go line level into an aux port. so i got phono MM for about 80 dollars. incredible sound. that at91r cartage with bass treble exploded. so i was using the phone stage on my vintage TT. i hooked up another phone preamp, if zen about 120 dollars. wow my at95e cart was singing. go line level with a preamp under 100 dollars. plus at91r is a better cart than at3600 on entry level TT. hope this helps. How much does using an external preamp improve the sound compared to using the turntable's built-in preamp?

  • @polawo

A massive difference! I was using the built in preamp first and it was a little flat and I just was a little disappointed. I then tried with the preamp and it was full of life and very musical. It made a huge difference. However, it will greatly depend on the pre amp. The Mobile Fidelity is a very musical preamp and gives good bang for buck.

Hi, would you explain what characteristics are this LP3 actually sounds like compared to the LP60xBT? Cause I have this LP3 with its original cartridge (AT91R) and it sounds muffled compared to the LP60xBT.. lack detailed and lack clarity. @@polawo No.. my friends use the built-in phono pre-amp from the LP60xBT and connect it directly to active bookshelf speakers. It sounds really clear, detailed and much better than spotify. I also use the built-in pre-amp from the LP3, but the sounds really muffled, deep, really different from the LP60xBT (which has lower price than LP3 😂) So from your thoughts, what external pre-amp do you suggest me to use for the LP3 to make the sound improved a lot? Do you upgrade the cartridge too?

@@christophericgogo Hmmm it is hard to recommend without hearing it. The first things I would ask are: 1. Did you double check you set up the tone arm correctly? For phono preamp, I would get the Rega Fono Mini A2D or the Cambridge Audio Solo.

@@polawo Ahh I see. Thanks for the recommendation for phono pre-amp. Yes, I even set the tone arm for almost 3 times and it still sound the same 😭 even I set it to 3 grams tracking force now to get more detailed sound (i've set to 2 grams and as i listened, I think 3 grams get more better sound). What do you think? And yes, me and my friends got the same bookshelf speakers too (Edifier R1700bt). By the way, have you ever try listen to LP60xBT before? I was thinking that maybe I got the defect product from audio technica? So maybe I should ask audio technica to replace the new one?

  • @polawo

    @polawo

    3 жыл бұрын

@@christophericgogo I used +3.0 for the anti-skate control. However, I wouldn't personally go to 3 grams for the tracking force so you don't damage your vinyl grooves over time. I haven't listened to the LP60xBT. But I do know that the LP3 is a better turntable and with a good phono, it does sound really nice. I reckon you could give the phono a go as you want to avoid the build in phono amps in general.

Just keep thinking it is budget because of price. What HiFi magazine in London gave it a 5 star, and few turntable ever get that score. A turntable must operate properly, and this one does. The weak link is the cartridge, and I'm using a $260 Vessel A3SV line contact cartridge from LP Gear, and it could handle one much more expensive than that.
