Just a note about the back panel color: Mine sat with the rear panel facing a window, often in the sun, for over a year. They've since had the chassis manufacturer do a better job of preventing this occurring, though my set-up is unusual.

I totally agree. Very neutral, very detailed, and absolutely black background. Love the Master 9.

Better than Chord Hugo TT2?

I got my Master 9 today and I couldn't be happier. It's paired with an Yggdrasil Analog 2 and I can't imagine upgrading. I had the Schiit Ragnarok 2, but it had a strange hum emanating from the transformer. I'm glad it ended up that way because the Master 9 is far better. I also have an A1 power amp with it.

Clayton M I’m running Focal Utopia. The only issue I’m running into is that it doesn’t sound good with poorly recorded music. Luckily I mostly listen to classical, jazz, and film soundtracks, which tend to be well recorded. I was thinking of getting Meze Empyrean for less optimally recorded music.

My local hardware store has DIY shelves which I use. They have 4 different shelf sizes and numerous pole lengths. Everything is already drilled or tapped so I just re-build the shelves every time I need a different arrangement.

Had any experience with the audio GD dac amps like the NFB 27H or the master 11 are they close to the master 9?

You can ask Audio-gd direct and they'll give you a straight answer. At a guess, since they share some of the power supply, the combo units will be slightly inferior to the separate components. The convenience of one component may outweigh any slight loss in sound quality though.

I've been using NFB1-AMP for 3 years and plan to upgrade to M9. Been wondering how significant the improvement going to be? How bad is the law of diminishing returns in the case of NFB1-AMP & the M9? Thanks.

It depends how good your headphones and source are. The M9 basically sounds more spacious with the music than the NFB1-AMP. Longer warm-up time for optimum listening too though.

Wonder how the Master 19 would compare to the M9. Would love to see Your review of the master 19 sometime in the future :)

I own the M19 and its the best Amp ive ever had ! Its 100% better than a Topping a90, fully different League. Price o 969€ is a Steal. The Sound is very deep, detailed and big, its 3D like. Iam 100% happy with it and for me its the best Sound i can imagine. iam not searching anymore...for other Amps, i dont even think about it. I simply relax (:

@Currawong I'm sorry for commenting 2 years later but i see it just now, at 3:29 the red resistor (aka red rectangular thing) seem melted! i don't think it should look like that.

That's because I experimented with changing the DC server op-amp.

Could you make a comparison between M9 and SPL phonitor XE if possible? It seems that both of them sounds neutral and detailed.

@@zeissiez so what is the selling price? This review gives crazy, detailed review, almost never notes the price. Like a restaurant with no menu prices because they consider their food beyond compare. Just wrong.

I have the Audio GD Master 9 as well and have to agree that warming it up is key. Actually I think this, more than any other solid state amp I've heard, requires a warm up period to really hit the sweet spot of the sound. Which, by the way, is to me basically dead neutral. The best thing is that since there is so much power, it really works with any headphone. I've not really tried it much with IEM's but I don't think there would be a problem there. Anyways, I'm currently using a Chord Hugo 2 as a DAC at my desk but want to get a DAC to leave there. For between 2,000-3,000 US dollars, what would you recommend. I see that the Yggdrasil hasn't moved and you seem to be using that a lot still so I'm leaning that way right now, anything else I should consider? I really want to make a purchase so I can go back to having my Hugo 2 more for travel and not have to hook it up at my desk all the time. Thanks.

If you don't need DSD etc. then the Yggdrasil is good. The other one I'm reviewing at the moment is also good, the iFi Pro iDSD.

They share same amp design and parts, just the power supply is different, so the M19 sound less transparency than Master 9 but not much (about 95/100 kingwa said)

Is it the best headphone amp among their actual stuff? Their products still puzzling me.

That's probably because they have a mix of separate components, as well as combined ones. The HE9 is the very top of the line.

How does this compare to the schiit ragnarok?

That's very hard to accurately evaluate given I couldn't A/B the before and after.. Kingwa said he thinks it makes the sound softer.

Because A: They often change, and B: They vary depending on where in the world you are.

Why review the m9 in 2018 which stopped being produced in 2017, much earlier? Misguided?
