The most ominous sound I can currently think of and surprised it wasn't included is a classic, cold war / nuclear air raid siren. It's instinctive to humans to induce utter fear.

If I may try: You have a 'playful' phrase, utilizing 'the full range' of orchestral elements, even if they are simplified... You have the percussive Marimba, the digitized Horns and emulated Strings all at once, as the symbol G is drawn out. (Now pull out your GC and hold the "Z" buttons in various configurations ;) Classic, thanks for bringing it up.

Perhaps my memory is failing me, but sounds of upwards glissandi have been used to depict jumping in cartoons *way* before Mario even existed. I'm pretty sure Nintendo did not invent that. (OMG MUH NOSTALGIA)

It wasn't an "AOL dialup sound" at all. Your modem made that same sound no matter what service or ISP you were connecting to. (If it was recent enough. Earlier, lower-speed modems had simpler handshaking sequences.)

Oh, it was engineered. Just not for "product branding", which was what this video is about per its subtitle. The reason for letting the user hear the sounds was that you would want to hear if you got a busy signal, or a SIT tone, or something else _other than_ the modem protocol handshake.

Hm? Are you saying the modem handshake sounds are an example of skeuomorphism? That's not how I understand the term. An example of skeuomorphism is the "green felt looking" texture that some early PC games and game packages used as a background. Actually having green felt on the top of your real, physical desk is not skeuomorphism.

Filomena Rocca Same, though tbh it still kinda does today. It's mainly cause, in my mind, it's synonymous with the movie Twister. I first saw it at a really young age & that movie is scary enough normally because Tornados are scary af as is, so little 5, or somewhere around there, year old me saw that and was thoroughly *TERRIFIED* and still to this day have slight PTSD with that movie. Oh, Jason X & the live action Resident Evil (first one) but those are different stories for another comment should one wish to inquire.

I think that they missed something pretty obvious in their descriptions: both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 start-up sounds are anticipatory. The "inhalation" for the 360 definitely, but the PS3 has something of a pun too: you literally tune right before you play.

FLUXXEUS Apple has some the best sounds for inducing a thought or mood. Steve Jobs invested a lot of time and money into making the consumer experience satisfying and it shows. These are some of the most recognisable sounds simply because people want to remember them.

So many people use macs and iphones so they hear these sounds everyday constantly.

Good audio design is an extremely overlooked feature in many tech products. Microsoft had the right idea when they hired Brian Eno to compose the Windows 95 startup.

It's triumph, but of mice.

5:50 trully a sound I'll never forget, firstly, the descending tone bringing you into a state of laser focus. When I played the ps1 in my living room at this very moment, everyone in the room would look at the screen, even if for a tenth of a second! then, there it was! With a "heavenly" fade to white, the logo reveals it's "wings" has the tone releases a chord so powerful, yet so peaceful with it's intentions (you were about to play your favorite game after all) accompanied by what resembles the twinkles of stars to further elevate you in a state of another world. Then, in the final moments, the screen turns to black again, a chord of twinkles are played, revealing the Playstation logo, has a mildly mysterious set of notes are played, resembling the potential discovery of something unknown and uncharted, leaving you in a state of wonder, just like a movie would hold you in suspense when you hear the "tun-tun-tuuuuuun".This intro made me feel focused, amazed, intrigued, frightened but determined to discover what this world had to offer me. All of this shown, in the first 10 seconds, as soon as you pressed the "on" button. Truly my favorite tune and one I have ever had the pleasure of earing.

I remember it sounding different when I was really little. Like, the four notes at the end were just played on a marimba or something with no harmonization like there is now. They also added another higher pitched note to the end of the four notes when I was in grade school and that lasted maybe up until 2013 or so. The variant with the high note at the end I'd always hear in Dell ads in the early 2000s during their "Dude, you're getting a Dell" campaign. Those ads have stuck with me for SO many years.

I could highly regognize the Intel sound but i couldn't tell it was Intel

The AOL one is a 56k modem handshake. The 14.4 handshake ends at 21:13-21:14. That last part if I remember right is the 56k part of the handshake. (It's been 20 years since I ran a BBS) Sounds like a US Robotics modem versus a Hayes modem.

This is so fantastic, but I wish they would've talked longer about each sound. In a recording session, my friends and I talked for about an hour about when iPhone added reverb to some of their sounds, and we were discussing how many convolution scenarios you could've approached it with.

This video was a LOT better than the videogame sounds two-parter, these guys had a lot more analysis to talk about and actually broke down the logistics of it rather than the four sound designers in the other two vids that just screwed around a bit. I like these two a lot, I hope they come back!

What about Roblox death sound?

the Skype ringtone is terrible. obviously made by the tech guys in the early days then just kept out of nostalgia.

I've always thought sounds are recognizable because, like smell, they bring memories and nostalgia

Good video, misleading title.

The AOL dial up sound was one of my favorites. Not sure why, but growing up I loved dial up modem noise.

"AOL dialup" Not just AOL, all dial-up as the guy says, and not branding, it's the actual conversation. The blog post and chart that the one guy mentions is fantastic.

this was interesting as hell

I feel like these guys had difficulty separating some of these sounds from the way they've been used.

Jon That’s the point the sounds should be inherently interconnected to their purpose & function otherwise it’d be a forgettable sound effect

The startup leads in good

They should have played the PlayStation commercial outro sound (the weird sounding kid saying "PlayStation"). I've always wanted an explanation/analysis of that.

More of this kinda stuff please

"The psychology"? This is just saying what they remind you of, not how they were designed or *why* they remind you of that thing.

Alexander Marinissen they did tho, they talked about the “breath” in the Xbox and the bubbles of Skype, the back and forth of the iPhone message. They can’t tell you how they were designed because that isn’t psychology nor were they there.

I love the new Dolby Atmos logo sound. I remeber sitting in my first Atmos Movie and the Atmos Intro went off and the whole cinema was dead fucking silent until one person whispert: "Man, THX is dead..." :D

Man, that Playstation start up hit me with fucking nostalgia.

2:13 It's going for 56k. I wonder if it succeeded? Yes, that specific part of the sequence only plays when both the calling and receiving modem report 56k compatibility. The specific way that that part sounds varies wildly depending on the manufacturer.

They did not dedicate 1/8th of the space on the sonic the hedge hog cart to the Sega sound. They were done with the game and had that much space left, and wanted to fill it.

The Sony PS1 sound is perfect.

1:59 I worked for AOL back in those days doing dialup support... I used to write customized AT Command strings (the “talking” the one guy talks about) for different modems... I remember tuning my own dialup to get 7kB/s and thinking how blazingly fast that was, now I have over 10MB/s...

my childhood was reborn at 5:50. the first PlayStation will always be the best in my opinion.

Two of my favorite sounds of all time will always be the Gameboy startup sound and the DS startup sound

So this are all digital sound. I was wondering for years if the sound you hear when you open a can like coke, beer etc. Is designed or just happens to be as it is per „accident“. Cause the sound is immediatly remembered with a nice beverage to enjoy. Cheers

Considering how many analog sounds like car doors are designed in great depth and how the Coke bottles have been meticulously designed as well, I’d expect the sound of opening a can to have been tweaked in some way, too.

No PS2 sound? disappointed. anyway, the ps1 is still amazing even today. better than ps3

This was a very good video. I love hearing their observations and am impressed how they appear to know these consumer electronic and media sounds.

I just love the passion with which sound designers and aural branding experts speak, it's the attention to the smallest detail which is so fascinating...but, I guess that comes with the territory, your job is often to make the greatest impact with the least amount of effort, so I guess attention to detail is key to success.

The windows 95 startup legit gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Along with all the other vintage startup and shutdown sounds before XP, so nostalgic!

My Windows 2000 computer never had working sound. The sound I always associated with it was the noises it made turning on. bwwwwwwuuuuhhhhhHhHHHHHhHH-beeeeaaaaaaabbbbbbbdddudud!Duuurnurnrun bep beep.

I heard the windows 95 start-up and got vaporwave flashbacks

"It's Triumph... but of mice!" I don't know why that made me giggle but it did.

Th in the black on the right analysis the sound really well, where the left one gives feedback in a way "regular" people understand
