I kinda noticed that the sound effects in happy movies were more subdued than action/thriller movies. I didn't think that was intentional. I’m sure the audible level of sound effects in different genres is very intentional. Even in this video you can see that they mixed the sounds at quite different audio levels, and the results sound great, so they know what they’re doing… My hunch is that in action/thriller movies everything is louder (both sound effects and music) to get the viewer into a state of semi-panic, fear, or at least a high degree of alertness.
She has to understand soooo much about objects and sounds, but also empathize and connect with alllll aspects of the scene, and unify the 2. Such a talent!
Even as someone who works in the film industry, foley always still blows me away every time. Easily one of the coolest and most fun aspects of filmmaking - and Joanna is one of the coolest out there doing it!
Without these sound effects action games won't feel as good as we experience them.

I knew foley was a big part of a game or movie but holy crap, the examples here really showed how much of a huge difference it makes. Foley artists are literally acting out…. the world. The entire world. Every sound. Incredible
I can't remember who said it but the quote I'm paraphrasing is "The audience understand what they see, but they feel what they hear". Foley is, right alongside music, such an important part of any visual storytelling medium.
She's really cool! It's a unique talent to be able to pick out all these random objects and associate certain noises and sounds to them.
I've always said that practical effects (makeup, animatronics and such) and foley must be the most fun jobs in the movie industry. Making sounds for video games must be equally as fun and fulfilling.

Doesn't seem that easy to me lol. Not to mention, just a couple of seconds require many sound effects. Imagine that for a whole entire 40+ hour game lol
There are several people in the comments that didn't understand as to why Foley artists are a thing. For one, getting the perfect sound for the scene without any background noise or unevenness is much easier when you just have a Foley artists with a bunch of props on hand. Plus, there are scenes where, honestly, you quite literally can't recreate in real life for sound. And you have to think about the fact that using actual sound may be too loud and play over the voices. With Foley artists, they have an array of props and they have the sound equipment on hand so they can get perfect or near perfect sound effects without interrupting any dialogue or ruining a scene.
This is the coolest job I’ve ever seen or heard about in my life!

This was so cool to watch, really amazing, seems like a nice job for creative people!
Sound & music are sooo important in gaming so it’s nice to a video like this show casing the time and effort that goes into it
So awesome to see that the foley stage is still so heavily used in media after all these decades!
I’ve never considered the time and artistry involved…. I’m thoroughly impressed.
this was beautiful. I love the passion. I now love foley and I didn't even know what it was before -- all because Joanna loves it -- it radiates. Thanks for sharing your light
So passionate about her job and she does it so well.
Weaponized ASMR is a great way to describe this. Love her language, vocally as well as all other ways of her audio design :D

Everything is so random, but so affective! I love it!
The fact that she does this so effortlessly is incredibly impressive, never even realized sound was taken this seriously.
