Audio EQ Basics - EQ insert for FOH - Stage Left Audio

Музыка

EQ Basics - Part 3 of 3 (EQ as an insert or as an in-line for FOH)
Running an EQ as an insert provides much greater control over FOH sound quality than running it in-line with the FOH output signal. As an insert, the EQ settings and fixed gain level don't change when the FOH fader is moved.
If the EQ is placed as in-line EQ, the gain levels of the EQ will change with the FOH fader movement - the changes can affect the sound quality of FOH. When possible, run an EQ as an insert; if no insert provisions are available on your board, running the EQ as an in-line EQ is your only option.
The trick to good sound...? When correcting/cleaning a FOH mix, always cut frequencies first.

    You are correct with your comment on proper gain structure settings; the issue is with setting (and maintaining) proper levels of the EQ. Running the EQ as an insert or inline becomes a personal choice and can depend on how the sound system is used (i.e. for a single band in a bar or for multiple bands at a festival/bar). The greater amount of gain structure changes before the FOH EQ can equate to further changes with the FOH EQ. The goal is to reduce the potential FOH EQ changes.

    Thanks for the feedback. If you are running a stereo FOH mix, then you would want to run another EQ as an insert from the R FOH insert. The video shows a mono FOH mix. The choice of running FOH in stereo or mono can depend on the event needs/requirements. FOH doesn't need to be run in stereo, mono can work very well.

    Correct. Pan all channels to either L or R depending on preference. However, if you are using subgroups, pan the individual channels as you normally would for assigning to subgroups, then pan all the subgroups to either L or R. When running mono, you can use both sides of a xover (using a Y cable like you mentioned). But, you can also use just one side of the xover (depending if your amps support parallel connections and provide "pass-through". If not, you may need to use both sides).

    Yes, it is common to add small mixers to larger systems to provide sub-mixing. The EQ can be added as an insert to the channel you use for the sub-mixer on the church system. However, make sure the sub-mixer mic levels are kept around 0db and the main output on the sub-mixer shouldn't be above 0db

    Relativity speaking, stereo FOH works well in small venues and when instruments use effects such as 2-channel phasing/flangers, or heavy chorus on vocals. In larger venues, stereo doesn't work too well because what comes out of one side of FOH, the crowd on the other side of the stage may not be able to hear it (and vice/versa). Running mono provides the same signal to both sides of FOH. 99% of all shows I do are mono. Some people run subs in mono and mid/highs in stereo.

    Running FOH eq, inline. On monitors, inserted. Heres why: When mixing FOH, I tend to use my headphones for pfl/soloing/etc. Often times I'll listen to different mixes (balcony fills, etc) and I don't want to hear the eq processing, as generally, how it sounds in my cans, its eq'd to sound the same from the speaker (otherwise, whats the point in having a reference monitor-headphones if it sounds completely different). Doing monitors, generally you use a cue wedge rather than headphones (although handy to have around), and you do want to hear the processing, otherwise your hearing a non processed mix that doesn't sound the same.

    I guess everyone has"their own poison".I 've always had good results using Altec 729A's at the FOH output and on my two monitor mixes.Did a 6piece southern rock band for a loong time with that as a setup.With 24 bands of cut I never had a problem and never really gave a rat's *** for anything on an insert basis except for using some effects a particular band member wanted.with my two Siamesed Altec 1220AC's and a couple of dynacord echocords I was loud n proud.Actually used HeThkit AA-1640's for power! Ran them both sides at 4 with just a small blower on the top of the rack. EQ needs to be done with à very judicious hand.Anything needing more than a 9db cut is a problem somewhere.Move a Mic,different Mic,change the TYPE of mic.You know what I mean.Listen to you system.Play something you are intimately familiar with through it. Currently, i have the Main mixer insert L/R(below the Main Mix Out L/R) connects Tip to the EQ then out to the Compressor then Ring back to the Mixer. Mine doesn't have the "insert" for each channels. Will this make the vocals sound worst?

    Kent Nguyen I'm not sure about Karaoke, we do only live sound. Though, you may want to use the compressor as a "safety net" for large signals spikes. Recorded music is already highly compressed, that you may not want to use a compressor on it.

    Hello, I am so glad I found your channel. I am currently in a dilemma. I am a singer but became an impromptu sound guy in church. I have been getting by for about a year now and learning here and there. We have a pretty large space that can accommodate 600+ persons. Our setup comprises of a 24 channel mixing board, 4 amps, 4 mid range speakers, 2 double subs, 8 side fill speakers, 1 pair of active stage monitor. We have a 2 channel 32 band dbx eq connected to the mains (midrange and sub), 1 cross over, and a compressor we don't use. I often have to deal with my highs (tweets) blowing up. The side fill speakers are connected to Aux 3 & 4, Stage monitors Aux 1, headset mixer Aux 2. What's the best way to connect the EQ. Going by your explanation, the current setup is inline. How can I change this to insert? How do I stop my highs from blowing out. Also my midrange and subs which are connected to the EQ sound terrible. While the side fills sound great.

  • @stageleftaudio

    @stageleftaudio

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you are blowing up the highs, this is due to far too many watts being pushed to those speakers. In a 2/3-way setup, the mid/high speakers should only be powered with amplifiers rated for the continuous wattage of the speakers being used. Burning up highs is very common when too much power is being fed to them. To run the EQ as a FOH insert, there needs to be an "Insert" jack on the mixing console at the main outputs of the console. They should be marked as "Insert". A special "Insert" cable is needed to run outboard gear as an insert. These cables look like " Y " cables, but are wired differently than a " Y " cable. if your board does not have an "insert" jack, you will not be able patch the EQ as in insert. To stop blowing up the highs, only use an amplifier rated at the continuous power of the highs. Make sure the crossover settings are correct for the speakers you are using. A FOH EQ should only be used to correct small issues with the FOH sound, it should never be used as the primary tone control of the sound system. If your midrange and subs sound terrible, it's usually due to how the instrument input channel strip(s) are setup - for example: think of the instruments that would use the subs... check those input channel strips and make sure those are setup correctly. Most all sound related issues are due to incorrect channel settings (gain, EQ, HP filters, etc...), then, incorrect crossover settings, gain structure... There's a lot of variables involved with getting good sound; the EQ is a small part of that.

    Am I correct in assuming that if we were to run our FOH in mono we pan all of the channels on our mixing desk to the left/right depending on which channel we are using? We have exactly the same mixing desk as you so plan to try mono on FOH which is great one less cable to worry about and then at the amp rack we will have a Y split cable taking the single XLR input to our left and right input on our crossover?

  • @TheUltimateDrifters

    Hi in the video you inserted the EQ on one side of the main output only. I assume in a live situation you would use both left and right inserts so you have EQ on left and right? Great videos by the way :-)

  • @stageleftaudio

    @stageleftaudio

    6 жыл бұрын

    Due to all the potential variations in halls, event locations, speaker placements, number of people, type of music played, etc... there is no optimal way of running a FOH EQ. Though, the FOH EQ settings should always start out flat ( -0- ). FOH EQ is to correct minor issues. It is rare to have feedback issues caused by FOH. If FOH feedback occurs, it usually means one or more mics are too hot (to much gain), or the FOH speakers are too far back into the performance area (FOH speakers should always be well forward of the "front line" of the bands. Running the EQ in-line provides for more control and less "issues with gain" down the signal path. An example of a FOH EQ setting would be to lower the frequency of 120hz by about 6db to correct for the 120hz bump that occurs when using a crossover at 120hz.

    +changievangie If your mixer has the word "insert" next to the main inserts, those connections are actual inserts; and not outputs. Some mixers have insert points for their main outputs; others do not. I recommend checking the manual to see what it indicates as those inserts are.

    Same response from the other reply: It's up to you if you want to have multiple external processors; though, they are certainly not needed. Having a lot of processors would require a lot of work to get them tuned for each instrument, and could require a lot of rack space. If you were recording, then maybe you would need that level of control. But for live sound, it's not needed. However, for some digital consoles, you may have to assign compression/gate/EQ to each channel because some digital consoles do not have subgroups.

  • @stageleftaudio

    Do not apply any EQ on the active speakers; they should be set flat. And remember, EQ is primarily used to correct tonal quality issues, meaning, you should apply EQ cuts to frequencies before you apply EQ boosts. When using EQ, start with channel EQ first (cuts or boosts) for whatever vocal/instrument in on that channel, then move to the graphical EQ. The graphic EQ, (if at all) should be the last to set.

    If you are using only 1 mic for the drum kit, you can place an EQ in the "insert" point of that drum mic channel. You will need a special cable designed for "insert" use. Basically, one side of an insert cable is the send, and the other side is the return. Using an insert, you can apply the EQ at the channel. If you are using more than one mic for you drum kit, route all the mics to one of the subgroups (i.e. subgroup 2). Then connect a cable from the subgroup output and route to the input of the EQ. Then, from the output of the EQ back to a channel on the board. This will give you EQ over all the mics; though, the channel you use for the input from your EQ will be your "master" input for the drums. Leave this fader at -0- db when mixing.

    You can connect to either type of channel. Mono channels usually offer better control than stereo channels. It doesn't matter which mono channel you use. However, you can connect to one side of a stereo channel (usually the Left side). Stereo is ok, but may not have the same control as a mono channel.

  • @stageleftaudio

    If you are connecting the EQ as an inline EQ, then yes, you would run an XLR cable from the output of the EQ to the input of the powered speaker(s). The volume level for the powered speaker would still be controlled by the console (and some by the EQ). Placing an EQ between the console and the speakers does work, however, more work is needed to ensure the EQ doesn't get overloaded.

You would have to max out your mixer to clip a good balanced EQ inline. His EQ meter when used as an insert shows way below optimum signal level.

    If the DSP is going to be used as a crossover, it should be placed after the EQ. If the DSP is going to be used to compress or limit signals, it should be placed before the EQ. If your board supports "inserts" on the FOH outputs, place the EQ in one of the inserts (or both if you are running stereo), then you can place the DSP in line with the main FOH outputs. This way, you get the benefit of the EQ and DSP without having the levels of the EQ greatly affecting the DSP.

    With one FOH insert on mono, it doesn't sound like that would extend to the L/R FOH (whole system) outputs. It's probably best to keep the DSP and EQ inline where you have them. If you are using your console for live music, there shouldn't be too much of any FOH EQ being used (except for freq. cuts mostly, and maybe some additions). Sorry, we do not have any videos for the 166XL. Most people, when using the 166XL on FOH, will use the unit as a whole system compressor/limiter. Basically, it's being used to protect the whole system. Depending on your console, you may actually get better use out of the 166XL using it for vocals or for drums.

    On that mixer, I believe the inserts you see are for the sub-groups only. It doesn't appear there are inserts for the FOH outputs. You can try running the EQ in-line with the FOH outputs if you think you need EQ on FOH. You can run the EQ off one of the group inserts, though, this will only provide EQ for whatever the channels are you have assigned to that subgroup.

    wish some musos would watch this... im sick of trying to tell so called sound guys that have been doing it for years who have the damn EQ set like a sine wave at every gig regardless..

    i see if you use the EQ in the Outputline you only alligned a -dB on each Edge Band on the EQ. That provides you from distroying your Speakers and lower the Noise in the Outputway to your PA. (The Noise is coming from your EQ Band Amplifires) The Soundregulation only will be made on the Stagemixer or after this littel Corrections on the Mixer itself but never more on the EQ! Your Soundallignment must be made everytime nearest to the Soundsource (on the Musicans Guitar and/or Amp - don't allow your Musican that he/she alling the Equiment by him/herself!!!!) and now later in the line of your Audiosystem. This saves you from Noise etc.

    Can I insert graphic EQs into vocal channels?

  • @stageleftaudio

    @stageleftaudio

    Yes. However, depending on the EQ and if you are boosting frequencies, an EQ can introduce noise into that channel, of which that noise would then be amplified.

  • @Motorman2112
    @Motorman2112Ай бұрын

    The behaviour of the EQ does not change depending on the signal level passing through it. Please attempt to measure this supposed effect, you will not be able to. There will be some improvement in terms of signal to noise ratio from keeping higher signal levels through the equipment, as with any equipment, but there will be no change in the EQing effect.

    +julito Balongcas Jr. Assuming everything about the speakers is the same, the larger the speaker size, the more air that speaker can move. Basically (and without getting into the math/physics), larger speakers can exhibit better bass response.

    so how do i get good and clear sound using this eq what setting will i use

  • @stageleftaudio

    A good clear sound comes from the instrument and microphone. An EQ is used to correct sound quality issues. There is no single setting that will make the sound good and clear. This is because there's a large variety of different types of mics, speakers, consoles, amplifiers, instruments, etc... not one single setting on an EQ can accommodate all these different things.

    i have active speakers dual equalizer 31 band digital mixer 12 channels is is enough for use in church? do i need crosover? and limiter?

  • @stageleftaudio

    What you have may be enough. There's a lot of variables with determining how large of a sound system is needed. You only need a crossover if you are bi-amp (or tri-amping) your system; from what you indicated you are using, you will not be able to use a crossover. A limiter is only needed to keep the speakers from getting damaged. Your active speakers may already have limiters on them.

    I run my sub rig from an Aux Send on my console. My digital console has 31 band graphic eq's on all Aux Sends, as well as the Master Output. So for my sub's.. I remove all frequencies above 100 hz. That way, nothing but low frequencies go to that rig. I also remove everything below 100 hz from the main rigs.. nothing high in the subs.. nothing low in the mains... no crossover.

    I'm not aware of a method to do that. However, with the routing capabilities on most boards, there's probably a way to route signals around.

    If you run your system properly gain-staged, there will be NO APPRECIABLE DIFFERENCE in the performance of a properly functioning EQ whether it is inserted or in-line. I'm not going to say you're incorrect, but this is very misleading. No....I'm going to say it. You're wrong on this point.
