I suspect the slightly front heavy 55:45 weight distribution was caused less by the engine’s position, and more because of the steel balls of the driver. What a time for rally. What a time.

If you meet someone say they do, they may be lies personified ;) Amen.
There is something that I have always found to be mortally scary about this car. There's a combination of things. Firstly, there are its looks, with all of that big bodywork on a short wheel base, and the brutality of its gait in the way that you can see the weight being thrown forwards under braking, and then thrust rearwards again under the acceleration of all of that power. Then there's that haunting 5-cylinder wail frequently punctuated by a loud, spinning, scything, piercing whistle. And then there's the fact that it carries the halo of the fearsome reputation of Group B. I find it all to be sinister in a way that can be quite troubling, in exactly the same way that a small child is irrationally afraid of monsters: although I've never seen one of these in action other than on video, the monstrous experience feels very real to me. I would mentally have a problem stepping inside one of these, and yet I hold it up as one of my most hallowed motorsport icons, just for the way that it never fails to make an impression.

Audis (or most/all rally cars) did not have blow off valves. You're hearing compressor surge.
RAC Rally 1985 - I was one of the stage marshals and bore witness to Hannu Mikkola's Sport E2 passing by me within a short distance when its exhaust exploded spitting out flames a good half metre behind. Unforgettable, and my all-time favourite car. 0-60 mp/h in 2.5 seconds............ON GRAVEL........35 years ago! Kinda sums it up really
Awesome to see legendary rally driver Stig Blomqvist in this video! I’m proud to say we are from the same town in Sweden :)
I marshalled at Rally Australia in 95 or 96 (getting old can't remember!) and had Stiq Blomqvist retire near my marshall point. I offered to give him a lift back to the start of the stage. I'd driven to the stage in my nearly new Celica GT-Four Group A Rallye. He and his co-driver were a bit hesitant getting into the car as it had been raining and they had mud all over their shoes. I couldn't have cared less! How often do you get the chance to drive a rally legend around. He was a great bloke.
That 5-cylinder turbo engine is pure perfection. Love it. ❤❤
So so nice to hear that Quattro chirp again, takes me back to the Welsh forest on what was then the Lombard RAC Rally. Epic piece of film Henry. 🎥
I've seen journalists dive the most expensive, fast and rare cars but i never really felt anything, this, however was the first time ive ever been jealous of someone getting to drive such a machine! Thank you for creating this video, modern footage of this majestic beast is hard to come by and we all appreciate the work you guys do!
What a film. Phenomenal amount of work put into this. Just wow. This is TV quality content for free. You guys deserve a pay day for all this work.
"I wouldn't know more than 3 people who could drive that car fast." -W. Röhrl
My highest of regards to the absolute monsters that the Group B era drivers were. I simply cannot imagine what it must've been like to thunder through small roads, dense forests, dust storms and, of course, crazed people lining the stage. To be able to drive one of these mechanical monsters must've been an absolutely surreal experience. God, I get chills when thinking about that era, even if I wasn't born to experience them. Mr. Catchpole, your videos are absolutely stunning, and they are true gems of the automotive world. Also, HUGE props to the Carfection team for shooting such spectacular shots and incorporating beautiful editing. Be it the intro with the TT, Quattro and the S1 E2, or the binaural audio ending for the two five-cylinder engines. I, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this video.
It’s true the 5 cylinder sound is so evocative. I owned a couple of T5 Volvos, the on Boost sound and performance was utterly addictive. The only reason I don’t still have one is running costs! Oh to be a wealthy man... thanks again Henry, nice trip down memory lane.
The four rings stir my soul, a child from the 80’s and now an owner of an A6 quattro.
as someone unfamiliar w the Audi Quattro rally model designations I definitely read this as season one episode 2
I’ve watched this video twice now and with each viewing I felt transported into the car with you. Now that’s what automotive journalism is all about and you sir, absolutely nailed it.
Audi should seriously consider building a Yaris style 1 off for enthusiasts as a branding exercise. 5cylinder obviously.

Thanks for sharing. Excellent production - well done to all involved. I owned an RS2 for 11 years - I made sure it went to a good home. I now drive an original RS3 - only because they made an in-line 5 turbo. It’s great they keep it for their special models too. I don’t think I’ll every get rid of it.
My first memory of a rally was when I was about 5 or 6 with my dad and seeing these cars come through the stage just sparked a life long passion! They all sound a million times better when you are a few feet from the side of the track the noise and smell it's just pure emotion for the senses! I'd give me left kidney for ten minutes in the S1!!
Henry, what a great video, love the fact the camera angles mirror the vintage footage.
Goosebumps all the way through the video. Absolute dream drive.
Fab piece which makes my mind boggle trying to comprehend what the drivers back in the day were putting themselves and the cars through flat out on incredibly challenging rally stages. This truly will never be repeated in competitions.
Thank you Carfection and Henry for giving us this immersive experience of the S1 E2! What a rare opportunity you had to drive this beast, and I will be watching this over and over again in the years to come, I'm sure! The sound of that turbo 5 cylinder has been giving me chills for nearly 40 years!!
Well, that was wonderful. Outstanding Carfection, outstanding Henry, outstanding Charlie.
I never really was an Audi fan.. hated working on them if I had to. But this, this is 80s glory. The Lancia Delta is king, but this one set the standard. Respect!

Carfection films somehow just keep on getting better and better. Amazing production as always. And the way that thing sounds on boost, amazing.
This is why I drive an Audi RS3. The history and that 5 pot sound, nothing on the road today comes anywhere near it and no better sound on a rally car either from the SWB Sport. Love it. Just love it. My all time favourite car and so lucky to have seen them race too.
Henry is living the dream of 80s in 2021. 😁 Please keep going!!
Stunning production (as always) guys!
I remember seeing these at Goodwood in the 90’s, grown men flocked around it, excited, jumping up and down as they warmed it up. Remember my Dads excitement at seeing it, this car is in that bracket (Brm v16, 787b, mclaren senna v12) the bracket that makes grown men shed a tear or run towards it as soon as they hear it fire up. If you know, you know! 😍
"I've driven quite a few rally cars". That's a not very humble brag if ever I've heard one. Awesome video as always. I never realised they pur a PDK in these a nice little history lesson.
The sound, oh man the sound...... so good. Love my Suby 4 pot rumble but this 5 just sounds so sweet.
I just found this channel. I wondered where Henry Catchpole had gone too. One of the great automotive journalists of this era. Knowledgeable and you can FEEL how much he loves cars.
Another gorgeous and awesome video. This is why I love Carfection.

Great video as per usual Henry 👏. Love the seemless shift from the TTRS to SWB Quattro to the S1 Quattro 👌😎👍

After you entered the car, I had to turn the CC on, because of that immense growl this legend produces. Exceptional review .

What an amazing opportunity that must've been! Truly an iconic piece of motorsport history. It blows me away that there's a few people out there who felt the need to dislike this video. Can't find anything to dislike myself!
My dad had a front wheel drive 87 Audi Coupe GT with the manual inline five. I just loved that car. It was so rare in the US. Even the Audi mechanics at the dealer would come to look at it when we went to the shop. People just loved the look and sound. I always wanted a quattro, but I would take that gem back in a heartbeat. He put 230k miles on it. It was a great car.
My god the production value and presenting talent is exceptional.
When Audi were kings... and led by engineers. The sound of this car is unreal. Up there with the best of all time! Thanks for sharing the experience 👍

Oh wow - when I commented below your recent Macca/Porsche/CLK piece that a Group B group test would be awesome, this must have already been in the works... lovely! What an absolute beast - can see the fear in Henry’s eyes when that turbo spools up, he looks like he had a proper wrestling match with this one.
God damn this is brilliant. Thanks Henry and team.

Fantastic video of a rallying icon, the sound of that 5 cyl engine is spine-tingling. I used to love watching rallying in the group B era, it just wasn't the same after they were banned.
This was brilliantly made!
I love that snippet about Rohrl ... I first saw the original in Ireland when he did the Ulster, and left everyone else minutes behind ... standing beside it off the start line was honestly scary, it just exuded power ...

Henry, love the fact you are trying to tame this beast! Was that filmed at Bicester? The sound is 👌🏻
Group B created some incredible and insane creations. This the T16, RS200 etc. But my absolute favourite due to its crazy looks and heavenly engine/exhaust note was definitely the 6R4. What a beast, like a standard Metro had been pumped full of steroids! So many fantastic cars that came from such a short lived series.
