Thanks to Richard for joining us for this video - / rsymonsltd
It’s time for an electric car range test you didn’t realise you needed… Until today!
We’ve got the all new Audi RS e-tron GT going up against the Tesla Model S Long Range as they go head-to-head in a race from Inverness in Scotland to central London - a journey of almost 600 miles!
Now of course, neither car has enough range to complete the journey in one trip, so there will be stop offs involved - and it's going to be oh-so hard to guess how this one may play out!
The Model S Long Range has (in case the name didn't give it away...) superior range, with the ability to last 388 miles on a single charge, while the Audi only has a claimed range of 283 miles. However the Audi has the upper hand when it comes to charging, with the ability to charge at up to 270kWh… If the driver can find a fast enough charger!
So who’s your money on, the all-new e-tron GT, or the Model S? There’s only one way to find out which will be victorious… LET’S RACE!

It's actually like that owning one too. There is a different kind of fun to driving EV's (other than blistering 0-60's which get boring in electric vehicles - Vs Manual ICE's). Especially when the top efficiency scores are almost unattainable - whether on short or long journeys. My wife thinks I've had a lobotomy when I drive the EV as every other second that I breathe, I'm a die hard petrol head! The EV is hers, the V6 supercharge, flat 6 NA and 1000cc sports bike are mine.

First couple of times you go down Below 0% indicated range/charge you get a bit scared. But I have never gone totally out of charge, even though I have done that sort of drives at least 20 times sofar. Just waste of time to stop and charge if you know you will get to a destination with charging capability. I drive it down to 1-5% and then instantly connect the charge cable when I get home. Not always, but when needed. Still has over 95% of battery capacity left. 100.000km driven sofar.

You are kind of right. When I got my first EV in 2014 a 220 mile trip involved an hour of pre-planning and three stops of ~40 minutes each. I’ve just ordered an ID.3 Tour (77kWh) and I know that I need to stop more often than the car does (because I have the bladder of a man in his fifties) so the plan for long journeys now is just to plug it in every time I need to stop. However, the charging infrastructure has always been there since 2014; it’s less reliable than it was seven years ago, and upgrades aren’t rolling out as fast as they could, but as long as you keep a contingency (20% on the ID.3 would be >50 miles) and use ZapMap or Plugshare, you will always find a working charger when you need one.

Also when talking about headroom and how tall people are, it doesn't follow that if your head is nearly touching the headlining at 5 foot 11 inches that someone 6ft tall will have a problem. It's entirely possible that someone with a short torso could be well over 6ft tall but have a short torso/long leg balance and their sitting head height could be lower that a shorter person with a different body vertical balance.

Well can't say this wasn't entertaining, but watching it with some friends we think we worked out why it worked so well. All of us got the feeling of a "normal car" vs "EV" vibe here because the Audi just blends in sooooooo nicely and it *doesn't* feel like an evil EV, which is out to destroy the rest of the cars. Well done Audi. And also well done Richard. The guy deserves some appreciation. Love his calm and smooth delivery.

@@HekateMGO You mean people who don't realize that the emissions of battery production and disposal are minor compared to the massive emissions over the life of an ICE?

Last I checked, the largest environmental disasters were from petroleum related incidents. Exxon Valdez, Deep Water horizon, etc... Caused more environmental damage, lost of animal life, and costs alone then all the mining combined probably.
