Don't think Audi will be to anxious to loan Harry another any time soon, but I believe his critique is spot on.
That fake intake grill behind the window ahead of the gas cap is egregious. Screams new edge mustang

@Nickolai Siegfried the "new edge" Mustang (99-04 model years) came from the factory covered in fake vents or whatever you want to call them. Thankfully the current factory Mustangs don't, I would know because I drive a 2015 GT.
@roespeloes
5 жыл бұрын
Nickolai Siegfried you mean fake exhaust tips, probably. Nowadays, almost every sports car has that (e.g. LaFerrari, Aventador SVJ, R8, P1, GT2 RS) and there are construction wise good reasons for that. Not so for fake air intakes.

Agreed. I remember my dad had a 91 camaro with two functionless "power blisters" on the hood. But on audi's 2018 top sports car? What the hell?? N
Love the limp handshake comparison :-) Great stuff as usual! Thank you!

The heck is that "heartbeat" noise?
the first r8 looked so much nicer, especially the headlights. all these fake grills, odd noises, fake exhasts and wierd things manufacturers do these days is really a shame. form seems to be preeceeding function and both seem to loose
@shaft9000

Agreed. The 1st R8 hearkened to a bit of BMW M1 meets Ford GT40 smallblock. This just looks like a somewhat-less-boring lump of Audi.
Harry is right on the money as usual... Oooof! False grilles and 'Heartbeat'? ...GROW UP AUDI!

Agree wholeheartedly - I really don’t like the V10 badging either, as it seems overwrought. The less said about the electric steering, the better. Pretty though.

Current Audi styling is the fallout of Dieselgate. Bland flat surfaces with lots of fake plastic pieces. Audi design has always been about round bold lines. Original Audi 90, Audi TT, Audi R8. Now current fleet of Audis have flat surfaces to save money - flat panels less costly to produce than rounded body panels. More plastic and less metal means reduced cost. Poor Audi! I suspect Audi sales globally will fall, all there cars are looking too generic! This is the beginning of the end for the R8. No one is buying.

I love his taste in cars... so often I'm thinking something and he says exactly what I'm thinking, the grille and the side blade on this car are perfect examples. He also owns most of the cars I drooled over as a kid... The F1, XJ220 and NSX are pretty much the only ones missing... maybe the Alfa SZ too...
"Limp sweaty hand" haha, thanks Harry that was gold. Great review as always.
I am happy Harry calls out designers for fake grills and exhaust tips fake noises etc. It is just unacceptable and cheapens any sporting pretentions of a car. I will not consider a car with any of that fake garbage. Ruins the car.
@K1lostream

ChaosphereIX - I also don't like the fake grilles, fortunately there's no danger of my ever being able to afford one, so its not something I'm going to have to wrangle over when I consider my next car!
My dad owns an 2007 R8 V8 manual, bought about 8 years ago. Great car to drive, reliable, nice feedback (yes a gt3 is better) and comfortable enough to drive long distances. Drove the Stelvio last year, did Munich and Austria this year.
Limp, sweaty hand shake. Great start to a review
I'm shocked! A car manufacturer makes a limited run version with bits removed but actually charges less!
@dleetr
5 жыл бұрын
Fair comment, i'm only making an observation on the concept of it being touted as a limited run. Well given that Harry stated that Audi sells 2000 R8s per year, i'm not certain that we can define 999 models as limited. The social media marketing around this car appears to have been that people longed for a rear while drive version of the R8 to make it 'wilder', or what have you. So the expectation from Audi was that this would pull in some new buyers from other brands. We'll see if the secret spice pitch works or not.

@@RustyPetterson Mate i picked up a bloody FPN in my 3.5ton motorhome for the heinous offence of achieving a mind blowing 36mph in a 30 area.....so with a "weapon" like that V10 i'd end up with a ban in a matter of months! That said i'd recommend anyone getting an FPN now to use the same dodge as Beckham.
“ steering feel like a limp sweaty handshake” 😂
Funny, just as I was thinking that the first-released R8 had the most stunning looks, you went ahead and said the very same thing... VW also regressed aesthetically with the Touareg / Golf... Why do companies have to endless fiddle until nothing is left but soul-less straight-lines a faux-aggression... Knowing when to stop is the secret to great art.

The massive Chinese market demands big front grilles and extravagant styling. The front of this car just looks like a TT to me.
Great review, really speaks to marketing decisions that on paper sound good but in the real world don’t deliver. I was surprised to hear the v8 is related to the v10. I thought the v10 was a pure Lamborghini carry over and not the other way around. Either way the early manual V8’s are the ones to have, more dramatic, dynamic and slower in a good way.
Dear Harry, we are dying for a review on the f355 manual. By the way, thanks for your channel, a true one and greetings from Spain.

I was thinking the same thing. I think it amounts to - if spending over £100K on a car, this may not be your best bet. Having said that, a fantastic screaming V10 - what an engine that is.
Another shirt from the James May Collection...I’d wear one if I could find one...
Give any car to Harry to use for a week and his review is all you need to know about the car. Job done.
Completely agree with your design remarks. Always liked the original one, the first and only truly sympathetic Audi ever, IMHO. Especially since it had such a petite face. They've ruined that now.
The original R8 managed to be curvy and edgy at the same time. It was a fantastic design. This seems a step back in all areas. The white paint and black wheels really dont do it any favours either. Give me the Alpine in the latest review instead.
Auto makers could save a fortune on focus groups and whatnots just by letting Mr. Metcalf drive their car around and report back. THANKS, HARRY!
The title says : "real world review" and i have to say, Mr Harry did not lie :) Thanks and sheers for your great channel Marc from France (Lyon)

I'm another Marc H .... but a Brit en Londres...! And oui, a good review. Will stick to my Mk2 Q3.
I would not be surprised if values of previous models of the R8 (and the Porsche Boxster/Cayman) hold their values as many owners prefer driving them more than current cars.

The first six minutes are a perfect example of what makes Harry's garage as great as it is! Love it. Keep it up, Mr. Metcalfe!
Love your videos Harry. Always honest and detailed, wish I had the chance to drive so many awesome cars, thanks for doing what you do!

Steering feel described as similar to a limp handshake... Thats made my day! Brilliant!
Thank you harry for never saying "quirks"!!!
Thank you ever so much for not sugar-coating this review!
They have listened to you lol. I got a 2021 RS5 Sportback and the steering feels better than what you are describing here. Talk about an awesome car, drove 8hrs straight and no fatigue at all with the nice extension they put on the seats to distribute your weight out. So much space in the sportback, I am taking her camping this year at Virginia International Raceway for the IMSA GT3. Love your videos and thanks for introducing us to Tyrrell's Classic Workshop. He's awesome.
Great review... I think when he says it’s “sanitised” that about sums it up... design and driving experience both dumbed down for the masses and the R8 has now become an audi “sub brand” rather than a pure sports car. No manual option annoys me too, even though the dsg is an undisputedly amazing box. Those fake grilles kill it for me too!
It's like real world car reviewing, isn't that what used to happen in Evo mag, loving it Harry, thanks.
Rear Wheel drive and a naturally aspirated V10. She's a rare beast. Even if the handling is bit stability minded and the steering a bit vague I still think this is the current highlight of the R8 range. Another proper review from a serious petrolhead. Cheers Harry, there's a reason why I still read Evo and Octane (even without you they're still brilliant)
@ianrutherford878

I don't think he said it was vague. At low speeds it is ridiculously annoyingly unbelievably uncomfortably worryingly LIGHT.Once it gets moving it is made heavier.Maybe I missed something.
Keep the great honest reviews coming, Harry. Cheers, mate
Awesome , honest, informative review as always! nice one Harry.
Top quality review we have come accustomed to from Harry!
Thank you Harry for this honest review , I appreciate it very much 👍
Nobody speaks about your shirts , Harry. I love them
4:30 if you can hack into the system and replace that sound piece with "good bye Harry"...now that would nice to have.
Harry's style and knowledge make this a video to greatly enjoy.... if he doesn't like something, you will know!! I am amazed fewer than 200K subs, but this seems to be a watershed number which "hockey-sticks" onwardly.... thank you Harry.
Harry, You are a living legend.. a national treasure!
Thanks for the honest review Harry. Great video as usual.
I am glad that I found you on you tube, I must say I like the road trips.
Like the honest review, but I follow this channel mainly for the cars from the 60's to 90's. Would really love to see a review of a Alfa RZ/SZ, Maserati Ghibli/Bora/Merak, Ferrari BB512 or 412. Or Porsche 968, Merc W126, BMW635CSI.
The only critical car reviewer at this point. The fact he gets tens of thousands, while the scene's celebs get millions of views tells you all you need to know about the greater car enthusiast public. They aren't enthusiasts, and certainly aren't prospective buyers - they just want to be entertained. Harry knows the truth can be entertaining. Keep them coming, Harry!
Amazing review as always Harry, thank you!
Great to see you back, Harry! Missed your video over summer. Agree 100% on looks: original R8 topped this one. The blade made it. German 2nd thoughts are sometimes a mistake e.g. the first generation Mercedes CLS still the best of the 3! Love your grounded reviews. Shrewd analysis not just marque hagiography!
Best start of a video EVER!
Nobody 'gets' cars like this man. Best reviewer out there.Audi always seem to dumb-down their most original designs.
The steering is terrible, he is right but the car can be specced without the trick variable rack and should be. Audi also needs to get the driving position lower, you do feel as if you sit on top of them a bit and even though you get used to it and it therefore isn't a problem, getting back into a GT3 or 570S you really see what it should be like. The biggest issue however is the dealers, most of who have no idea how to look after your typical R8 customer who bare in mind will be comparing them with Porsche service levels not Vauxhall. Then you add in the dealer residuals and that is why they don't sell many new ones....
Pretty good review. I own an RWS. Because you testers typically don't not own one you simply test one there is features that most owners will really like. The front grills would look worse if they made them smaller but they restrict the openings to reduce parasite drag of too much airflow. One of the other features I like is the fixed suspension system because those magnetic ride systems always fail after warranty has expired and cost a lot to repair. Also the light steering feature is simply for low speed driving and parking manoeuvres which I like. I have run this car around tight Calgary freeway cloverleafs at 110 to 120 km/h and felt the understeer oversteer by taking my foot off the throttle and back on and never once did I feel like it was going to break away. To me this car handles like a dream and I could put up with a few little things that I would like to change (aka CC brakes) I give it a 9.5 out of 10 thank you. When doing your reviews you should think the big picture of long term ownership a little more. I picked the RWS from looking at Porsche, Ferrari, Jag, Mercedes and BMW.
Thank you for this very honest review. Quite interesting. Best wishes from Germany!!!
Great review Harry & very fair criticisms. Most of the issues would annoy me too, plus i can't help thinking the current R8 just looks like a large TT. On the plus side there's a nice Merc W124 at 9:02. Looking forward to the next review.
You and James May have similar taste in shirts
Greatly explained Harry! Keep it up!
Brilliant as usual ! I would love to see you review the 991.2 GT3 in stick form
I appreciate your honesty Harry!
The only "gripe" i have with Audis... you can drive a top of the range R8 and it'll have the same virtual cockpit as the bottom of the range Audi A1... There's just something not right about that... great for Audi A1 and A3 drivers! Despite VC being a great technological advancement, audi was the first to introduce that to mass manufacturing, it sort of looks "cheap" on the more expensive cars in my opinion... top of the range cars should have unique features NONE of the lower end cars have.

That is a weird quirky feature hearing the audi advert end sound as you open the door. Annoying after a while I imagine. Good in depth review as always Harry.
The Master reviewer once again delivers a no nonsense review.
Loved the original R8. Silver with the carbon blade, manual with the V8. It looked absolutely stunning. Not a fan of the current R8 exterior. Great channel Harry and greetings from Australia.
Coco, I love the way, as SOON as you give the Audi some beans, the camera view goes from Speedo to your face shot, we know you NEVER exceed 60, apart from motorways/autobahns ect , I know I take the piss out of your cycling pedal position, but you know your stuff on cars AND bikes, and NEVER fail to deliver......
Harry! I hope you know, that your reviews carry a lot of depth and raw truth!
Harry's class is immense
Great video, keep going Harry
0:00 wow! Harry's back in town!
I think that's the most critical I've seen you be of a car yet. If you're dropping 120 grand on a car there is zero excuse for fake plastic grilles. Zero. Great video as always.
Another honest review, a bit different to some vloggers. Great video as always :)
Ooh, that exhaust note. It just makes you smile!
Excellent review Harry.
Good honest review as always .
Not an Audi fan, but it’s Harry, so always worth watching. It’s clear you’d have rather been in the Espada or Countach (and who wouldn’t?!)
Great honest, informative video!
Great review as always!
Great review your information is great i love the classic cars.
We love you, Harry!
Surprised by how Audi thought they could get away with it ! Great review .
well its one of those i guess where audi have tried to compensate for the casual drivers, another great vid!
Thank you for the honest review, I couldn't agree with you more about the first gen. R8's
Well analysed! .... Longing for you to test the TVR
Great Video... Did you ask James May to use one of his shirts? ;)
Love harry been following for years evo
I love new almost neo art deco look with new tt and this one... but when i saw fake intakes ... it is just a shame. They could do it really on a different way. Great video as usual :)

Great review Harry
Over the top critical about nonsense. This car is a homerun . I owe one now for over a year and it is behaves better than the 7 Porsche 911's I owned. Not a penny spend on maintenance. That V 10 sings every single time you start it up so beautifully . So much better than the Maserati/Ferrari and Lamborghini crap you love so much Harry. Nothing breaks down here not on the road and not at the track. I keep this jewel forever. If I would be AUDI you would never been given a car again. They didn't bribe I guess.
Good video as usual. Interesting that these cars are often referred to as drivers cars yet they are not much fun at legal road speeds. The best fun I ever have in cars or on motorcycles is the ones that you have to ring their necks.
Yes there is nothing worse than a wet handshake. Another great true review from Harry 👍
Good review as always Harry, when is the Thema 8.32 review coming ?
10:15 Haha like that. "Very soon gets illegal"
