Great review.

It looks great. Sometimes there is no reason to make sweeping design changes. Evolution is just fine here. The R8 is a car they could continue to evolve for a long time and I still be happy with it. That engine just sounds incredible too. This over a 911 Turbo S seems like an easy choice, but when you consider that the McLaren 570 is about the same price, that's a tougher choice. Probably McLaren for me if it has to be just one. McLaren 570 > Huracan > R8 V10 > 911 Turbo S. You can't go wrong with any of them though. It must be great to have that sort of rich guy problem.

Depending on my mood, I might go with the Huracan over the 570. The Huracan is priced about half way between the McLaren 570 and 650. So it's kind of borderline to even include it on the list.

von Richthofen I like the Lamborghini over the Audi for just the opposite reason. Driving a Lamborghini is an event. It makes it seem more special. If you have the money for one of these, you probably have another car to drive when you want to go more incognito. A friend of mine had a Gallardo for a while, it would be annoying to daily drive because of how everyone around you responds to it. If I was choosing one of these to drive as my only car it would be the 911. There are enough 911s on the road that it pretty much just blends in, and it's comfortable enough to daily.

I wasn't too sure about the looks when i first saw it, but now i think it looks great especially the rear end. Can't wait for a 3 way track battle with the 570s and Turbo s.

It would be interesting to compare the Lamborghini Huracan with the Audi ... i suspect they have tuned the chassis and maybe the engines slightly differently. Also, I genuinely believe that these modern super/hyper cars have become too fast to really be enjoyable on the road, with 600bhp you can generally only enjoy 300-350bhp on the road and then you would just be equally thrilled by a Porsche Cayman S/GTS/GT4 or equivalent. It is great to be able to do 0-62 in 3 seconds but that generally means that if you are on the road and not at a standstill, you need above average driving skills within 3-5 seconds you can loose your licence in 3s and that is true pretty much in any country around the world except Germany.

Amazing car, but I prefer the 991.2 Turbo S. The only thing is superb noise which you can't quite get in the 911 obviously.

The original R8 is timeless, it still looks like something from the future, the design is so beautiful and unmatched, an instant classic. No offense, but the R8 is just a reskinned Huracan. Imo. Audi bought Lamborghini to have the engines/chassis and know how from Lamborghini and be able to use it in their own cars. I think it's both good and bad. Audi could have tried to make a V10 of their own instead of putting a V10 that in my opinion should be Lamborghini exclusive into the R8. Alternatively they could have made the V8 even more powerful to keep up with the competition. Look at Mercedes-Benz, they make very powerful V8 and V12 themselves in all the AMG versions of their cars. Imagine them buying Ferrari and putting Ferraris engines into the Mercs.. In my opinion all car makers should stribe to have some authenticity, we kind of miss that when Audi does these kind of things..

+Eric Just did a little more research and it turns out you are right Eric. No wonder one can get confused since all photos of the engine clearly states "Lamborghini" on the motorhead. That along with the quotes of various motorjournalist saying "they put the engine from Lamborghini in the R8". Clearly people could be a bit more precise :) However I don't see that Maserati using Ferraris engines as the same case though. Maseratis are sportscars and kind of always has been. Audis however have always been regular cars with the sporty variants as the exception more than the rule.

Gallardo was released in 2003/2004 with the V10 engine in it (which I now know was "made by Audi") while the R8 with the V10 engine in it was released in 2009. How can a car released 5-6 years prior be a reskin? From wiki; "As Volkswagen Group owns both Audi and Lamborghini (Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.), some of the R8 is shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo, including some of the chassis and floorpan, door handle mechanisms, transmissions, and the revised V10 engine. The R8 is made distinct by its Germanic exterior styling, cabin, smaller V8 engine, magnetic dampers, and pricing". Imo. reskinning is for the lazy; "we can't bother to make something unique ourselves, so let's just base it on something else and tweak it a bit"

Don't know if I could drop six figures on an Audi.

+benzfen Just for your information, Gallardo has been discontinued; there is new series called Huracan which has more hp than Gallardo. And there is Huracan engine on this beauty. And probably price tags should be very close to Lambo, haven`t checked dunno

Yuu Tuub Thank you for informing me, but it wasn't necessary I now that! I wrote OLD as meaning of second hand. I don't give a shit about new Huracan after 500 bhp is pointless to have few more or few less bhp. But you can have Gallardo with manual gearbox - and here is the differences - driving 500+ bhp car with manual is something way different then semi-automatic or DSG! And here is where the skills matter and the trill comes. Regarding prices Audi is way cheaper then Lambo. R8 V10+ starts from £137 000 while Huracan starts from £180 000. There is offers for about £100 000 for Gallardo Spider manual with 1500 miles on the clock. As I said - I'll save my money and take the the old one!

When I saw the new R8 in the auto show, its front grille is extremely ugly in person! Only an idiot would spend this much money on this car.

CharGuitarGirl When I first saw the new R8, I did not like the looks of it at all (especially when compared to the previous model). But, the more I see it, the more I love it! And, as much as I loved the looks of the old R8, I think I now prefer the new one better. And, surprisingly, lots of folks that I communicate with on KZread have indicated that they feel the exact same way as I do regarding the new R8. Most of them stated that they didn't like the design at first. I just think the new model looks more exotic....more modern. I never thought this car would grow on me the way it has. Lol.
