The saying goes that three is a magic number - yet for Audi, it’s five that holds a special place. This year marks 45 years of the German brand’s iconic five-cylinder engine configuration - and as a celebration to round off the year, we’ve gathered together some of the most famous models to be powered by the legendary five-pot motor. But 2022 also sees another anniversary, because earlier this year the company’s latest and greatest RS 3 landed in the UK, marking the final model in the brand’s history to feature five-cylinder power.
The story started with the Audi 100 C2. The second generation of the brand’s family saloon was the first to get a five-pot motor, producing a grand total of 134bhp from its 2.1-litre fuel-injected engine. However, it wasn’t until a few years later, in 1980, when Audi’s five-cylinder history became really interesting, with a greater focus on performance. This is where our man Sean Carson picks up the story - join him for a blast in the firm’s greatest ever five-cylinder models.

When these came out, we were all still driving Triumphs, Vivas, Avengers, Morris minors, Cortinas, Capris, escorts and minis. The Quattro must of felt like the millennium Falcon compared to what else was on the road at that time.

Agreed, i was one of those stupid 'touchers' who tried to get as close as possible, without dying, to one of those Quattros in the forest, this video brings those memories right back into focus with a giddy intensity. The yowl of the 5 cylinder was intoxicating and addictive.The presenter here has communicated exactly what us spectators thought was going on when we observed the spectacle of a quattro go by i.e a male human trying to tame an rampaging T-Rex Audi fueled by steroids.. with a hot poker up its a55. I have a 1994 Audi UR-S4 Quattro that shares the same engine 2.2T 5 pot engine (230bhp) standard absolute beast. I have a project on going building momentum to 800bhp.
Audi has developed glorious engines over the last 40 years, 5 cylinder, 8 cylinder and 10 cylinder high revving engines and now the era is really coming to an end. I will stick to it and in the future just drive used.
I think the peak of those 5 cylinders were after group B with the insane IMSA series Audis. Absolutely love the 5cyl engines
The heritage E2 here is running around 390/400 PS to prolong the motor for events such as this
Had two C5 RS6s and a B5 RS4.... my god it was the greatest time of my life.
And to think Hannu and Walter had another 150hp for the 85 RAC and 86 Monte.
Seeing an S1 E1 been driven on the edge is something that no one forgets and lets not forget the S1 E1 only rallied a few time's near the back end of 1985 in the WRC events out that none championship rounds like Ireland and the Manx rallies. Only one driver really mastered the incredible Walter Röhrl with his win at that San Remo Rally were he set such a pace that the Peugeot 205 t16 stripped the treads off their tire's trying to keep up. I was lucky to see them at that years Lombard RAC Rally in what was a short event for them both Cars suffering incidents in that years event. Röhrl almost won the Monti Rally but for a crew error putting the wrong spare wheels in the car and then having to do a stage on the wrong tires. then the horrors accident in the following rounds saw Audi pull out of Rallying for 1986 and Group B was gone forever. Audi Quattro's still ran in both the WRC and British rally Championship's with the Big Audi 200 in Group A in the WRC and with the Audi Coupe none Turbo Quattro in the British Championship. But I can honestly say none in Group B sounded like a Quattro this is a car that you could hear coming from a distance with all those bangs and pops echoing through the woods just coming closer and closer until it exploded into view and blasted past you just as quickly and was gone off into the distance again, all the Group B cars were special but out of all of them the Quattro had it all the look the crazy power and that sound. For someone from those 40 years ago now I can not imagine what is is like for some one not born then , but it is also enjoyable that even getting on for half a century passing these cars still impress modern drivers when they get to drive these cars. that was a really enjoyable video thanks.
It was seeing one of these sport quattros with that sound in Kielder forest which made me buy a Quattro in 1988!!.. I had it 30 years and loved it. There isn't a car on the road which sounds as good as a SWB rally quattro. Damn you were lucky to drive that!. Great video,in which you really get the feeling how brutal they were to drive!
Well arent you a lucky lad. Such an iconic car!

Hmmm, not exactly an accurate comparison when stating its power is no more than an Audi Q3: this weighs less than 1300kg, whereas an average modern Q3 is closer to 1800kg....... not far off 50% heavier!!! 😳
I think going forward they should put the 5 cylinder into RS4/5 and possibly even into the RS6/7 with Battery assistance, once the V8 is killed off, just to keep the 5 Cyl alive as perhaps the last engine Audi make

@Quattroowner
Жыл бұрын
The engines differ only slightly in displacement, but the components are extremely different. Also, an S1E2 engine wasn't meant to run hundreds of thousands of miles - like road-going engines can do if you take care of them, the recirculation system in the S1E2 literally ate up parts of the engine, which is why it's disconnected on all original S1E2s today.
When your active traction control goes out on a Haldex AWD system, I bet that old school S1 feels like that. Just raw hp crudely blasted to four wheels spinning, no computer to break the wheels or rear diff that can torque vector. Scary! 😳lol
