Audi A3 e-tron POV Driving (all modes), fuel and battery consumption, city and highway, how to drive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello everyone,
Here's a sequence of POV driving in city and highway in EV, Hybrid Auto, Hybrid Hold, and Hybrid Charge modes. Fuel and battery consumption are shown and advices on which mode to use at the end of the video.
To clarify the ending of the video :
EV : should be use in city or short highway sections
Hybrid auto : should be used more on highways in order to have the best fuel consumption. Can be used in city driving too but fuel won't be really used unless very low battery or high acceleration (kinda not that useful in city driving).
Hybrid Hold (D) : better be used only if battery is necessary to access restricted areas only for EV vehicles
Hybrid Hold (S) better be used only if battery is necessary to access restricted areas only for EV vehicles or if full power of the car is needed/wanted
Hybrid Charge : not to be used because of very high permanent fuel consumption
-----------------------------------
When needed, the ICE will charge the battery. This can happen in every ICE mode.
This will make your engine consume more petrol for a certain time. This time depends on the hybrid mode selected, your driving style and speed.
For example on the highway (100-120 KM/H) :
The best mode is the hybrid auto. The car will switch between EV and ICE with a little battery charging.
Hybrid hold will keep the car on the ICE with some battery charging.
Battery charge will literally empty your fuel tank and will never switch to EV.
Additional details
In summer :
EV : 35-40 KM
In winter :
EV : 25-30
With heating, around 20-25 (i m usually not using the heating, unless extremely cold)
In General :
Hybrid Hold : around 600-650KM and between 5.5 - 6.5 L / 100 KM
Fuel tank : 40L
Battery capacity : 8.8 kWh
Usable battery capacity : around 7.7 kWh (the rest is reserved as battery buffer in order to avoid too much battery degradation)
Home charging price (battery) : around 2.50 CHF
Fuel price : 1.63CHF x 40L = 65 CHF
So it costs around 5-7 cents / KM with in EV mode.
Around 11 cents for the "fuel" mode.
Home charging makes running the car less expensive.
Some malls offer free EV charging so it stays a good deal.
Unfortunately, some private companies offer an extremely high price for charging (with or without subscription), that is as expensive or even more expensive than fuel. So companies a taking advantage of this new market. As a PHEV owner, i can avoid them, which is not really the case for pure EV owners who have sometimes no choice.
Also private companies have all their own system for paying. Using credit card, or smartphone apps, subscription cards, SMS... All this has no sense. There are no fusions, no collaboration, no good prices.
Some take in consideration the duration of the charge, some the kWh consumed, or even both a the same time. I personally avoid all those places.
For example :
This car takes around lets say 120 minutes to charge.
With our Swiss electricity provider in Geneva with public charging spots, it would cost :
Without subscription :
16 CHF (instead of 2.50 CHF at home)
With subscription :
59 CHF per year
+ 0.45 CHF / kWh (3.96 CHF)
If i charge at home, 59 CHF = 944 KM.
So just having the subscription makes me lose that many KMs.
+ of course the 0.45 CHF x 8.8 kWh = 3.96 CHF.
So not only the price of the charge is around 60% higher than at home, but you have to take the 59CHF/year.
It is a complete rip off.
Fortunately all are not the same.
To finish, i find that Toyota HSD is a bit more fuel efficient than Audi for daily city drive.
Actually, both motors seem to work more together and alternate more often in order to achieve good fuel efficiency and battery regen. But Toyota has 20 years of experience so no surprise there. Of course the Yaris HSD is lighter and less powerful, so that helps.
The switching of EV to ICE is also more fluid, but this may be because of the CVT transmission.
If any of you may want a latest Yaris HSD video, i could make it.

Great demonstration of the different drive modes and in which environments they are best suited for. I'm shopping for my first ever PHEV so I really appreciate the work you've done.

Great video and demonstration of the different drive modes! Actually, great series of videos, really fantastic. I watched them in the last 3-4 weeks while I was also researching due to I had the opportunity to buy one exactly same year, color, sport seats, etc. After that, I decided to proceed so I just received it 2 days ago :) I'm absolutely happy and ready to enjoy it, so thank you very very much for the help that you provided in the videos!

Thanks for the videos. I know this is years old. But do you have similar videos with air conditioning? Does the AC work well in EV mode? Or does the ICE need to run to get powerful and cold AC?

Hello, I think I had videos about stationary AC and it s difference of air temperature between in charge or not in charge. But for your specific question, while driving in EV, AC works very well. You do not need the ICE to make it work.

You prefer the Toyota hybrid to this? I've been searching about this Audi and the Lexus ct200h, they drive completely different for what I've been searching, but on the fuel economy, how would you compare both? The Lexus is very similar to the Toyota models with the 1.8L engine and hybrid cvt system

Hello, Indeed, if you make a comparison between this specific A3 and à Yaris HSD, the Yaris is just better because on how the engines work together and alternate to achieve a better fuel efficiency ride. With the new A3 TFSIe it is way better than this one but in my opinion still not as good as the Yaris. I do not know if the reason of such a difference is linked to the technology / mechanic they use or if it s just electronic (how it is programmed for so and so reasons) 🤗

Why did you drive EV-Mode in S gear only? This is counter inutitive to ecological driving on battery. Especially because you are missing an ECO mode on the car ;)

Hello Actichan, It s more of a habit to tell you the truth. It won’t make too much difference in term of regen with city driving but you almost never use the brakes 🤓 so that’s good. It also shows people that this bug I have found is working as some where not sure it would. But I didn’t expect someone to see the S EV mode to tell you the truth. 😂. You got eyes (unless I announced it in the video and I forgot aha ) Yes the eco mode missing in this car is a loss. But it s their first Phev so I forget them 😂

Hello, The battery will not really load (charge) when driving in hybrid / battery hold. It will try to stay the same level but range will still drop slowly. Especially during city driving.

So which mode do i use if my batterie is low (2km left for example) during city drive? Is it better to drive with hold or auto mode during that period?

  • @funcarreviews

    @funcarreviews

    7 ай бұрын

@@alzen9776 Hello, The car will automatically go in battery hold mode. If battery is really low, hold mode or auto might not change how the car behaves in city driving, especially if EV mode is unavailable (EV icon greyed out and crossed). It makes more sense to keep it in battery hold mode. The car will try to behave like a hybrid vehicle when more battery is available. The car will charge the battery bit, then when you accelerate the engine will turn on and when you are at a steady speed, mostly flat, the engine will turn off to glide in EV (if you dont have the EV mode icon disabled on the screen). Using auto mode will only empty the battery faster as soon as you have a bit of battery so I would not use it. This is what I remember after 4 years of driving this car (don’t have it anymore).
