ATV Log arch skidder

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this DIY video I show how to build a simple log arch for about $60 with salvaged parts you can find easily. It can be pulled by a ATV, tractor or truck.
This arch design keeps the log of the ground so it does not get rocks and dirt stuck in the bark, which is really helpful if you plan on milling the logs into lumber.
It makes the job of moving heavy logs, into a easy task, maybe your gathering firewood, clearing property, or like me hauling logs to a saw mill, It makes all the difference when you have the right tool.

    I watch these videos of folks harvesting logs and milling them into slabs, and folks who make their own diy backhoe or front end loader. I don’t have a yard to do anything like that but it sure would be fun to tinker and build things. Thanks for posting.

    Nice, I have a project down the line a huge old cedar blown down, This is on my secondary list project ;) Ok I wanna see all your cars and trucks I used to have a datsun 510 in the very early 80s, then when I went overseas we had Datsun 710 work trucks RHD, I ended up buying one, And I think I spy an old toyota corolla, a early 90s F250 as well as your sidekick, and KEI trucks. I sure would enjoy seeing a walk around of all your rigs/builds in one place. Thanks Again for all the links, tips, ideas, suggestions and tutorials!

    Hi buddy how are ya? So I made a log arch kinda following you design. It works great, for logs smaller than 24 inches. I’m going to build one that can handle 36 inch logs and pull it with my old Jeep. My sawmill will 36 inch logs. The log arch is so awesome, it keeps the logs cleaner than dragging them like I used to do. Thanks buddy have a good one. Love you channel!!

    Nice built log arch! Looks to be very heavy duty & compact. I modified and old propane tank trailer into a log arch works pretty good just big and gawky. Got video of it on my channel. I liked your setup & good video footage.

    Thanks for sharing that! Do you think extending the upper beam and adding another logg arch would work? I'm thinking it could help if the logg is longer and needs jamming up with the winch.

    Can you add a strap around the log instead of the cable- then hoist it up with winch to the top then add a second strap under the log hooked to your a frame then lower the winch

    Nice build but maybe you might think about using a chain on the back of the log and that would take a load off the wench and cable

    No but that's a good idea! I made the wheel base as wide as the tractor and ATV I have, mostly because I have tight trails on my property and don't want it to hang up on trees as I tow it around. Thanks for watching!

  • @doctorvox
    @doctorvox6 жыл бұрын

    Mike, is there any reason you can think of, for not reducing the height of the rear 'arch'? I need to make one now, as moving 10 foot logs across the width of the tractor is not possible in dense woodland.

    Hi John :) So I built my log arch to match the size of trees on my land and what I can fit onto my mill, This is mostly why I built it this size, and I was also working with the salvaged metal and parts I had on hand. I have been real happy with it. I think the rear height is good to keep higher rather then lower because there's been a few times where I have had a larger 12 foot log hanging off of it and as you tow it over hills and bumps the back of the log can sometimes bump on the grown from time to time, but say if the arch was lower it could become more of a problem and even cause problems if dragging when backing up. One thing I would change is the part under the winch that the log rests on when hoisted ( The part that had the teeth that I ended up capping in because the teeth did not let the log rotate when hoisted) That part is to far forward, I would weld it back 6 more inches or add a second one, because if the log is hoisted and does not touch that part it can and will move to one side or the other of the center bar. One other thing I should mention is I sometimes put two pieces of wood across the bottom two bars to make a platform that I can stack milled lumber on, this is a nice way to move milled lumber around your place with the same arch/ trailer! Hey John how's your mill coming along?

    Thanks for those tips Mike, I've finished the mill but before I could install in the woodland, I had 25+ fir trees come down in a gale, could not even get it near......so that has put my plans back by a few weeks.......months?! How long do you leave trees before milling?

  • @Mikefestiva

    Well sounds like your set for logs once you get your mill in place! I have milled green the day I have cut a tree down, Or have let it sit a year or so and then milled them, Fir cuts fine green or dry, just a little more dusty and maybe a little harder once dry. We have Hemlock trees in the NorthWest and they mill good when green but are a bit harder when dried so I try to mill them when there green if I have a chance to. I have not cut much hard wood but I would think green would be easier then dry? I hope you post a video of your mill once you get it up and milling :) Take care John

    Nearly finished my arch Mike, do you find it necessary to chain the log whilst in place, or just rely on the winch cable around the middle?

  • @Mikefestiva

    @Mikefestiva

    John Wells Good to hear! Depending on how the log is balanced on it, but most of the time I will just rap a ratchet strap around the front end of the log and top bar of the arch, this seems to keep the log nice and solid.

    Ted John thanks for subscribing! If you get time check out some of my other videos, I build a bandsaw mill out of salvaged parts too. The cable winch I used was a 1000LB one, they are real affordable and are used on boat trailers a lot. I used a Ford Festiva real trailing arm for the wheels and hubs, I had it sitting around my place and it looked like it would work good so that’s what I used, I think almost any rear trailing arm from a front wheel drive car would do. After 3 years or so my log arch is still holding up great! Thanks again for checking out my video!

    I cut the logs for my mill to 8' 10' and 12' I do not have to balance them much, it will hoist ether way, but does hoist better with the heavier end out off the back off the arch. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for checking out my videos Russ! Haha yes I installed round head lights on my Festiva a few years ago, I have done lots of mods to that little car, 1.8 DOHC 16 valve escort GT motor, 2.1/4" exhaust, bigger brakes front and back, 14" Miata rims, RX7 steering wheel, GEO storm front seats, rear hatch spoiler fitted from a civic, front strut bar, I'm sure there's other things I have forgot about. And yes I'm on the Festiva forum. do you have a Festiva?

    Hey there Mike. Yup I'm on the forum and I have 4 Festivas. Not any mods to speak of except for a trailer hitch and Aspire struts on one of them. Haha, I just went to the forum and typed in round headlights. Lo and behold I found your posts about the grill/light mod and your bandsaw mill. I actually commented on the saw. Last comment in the bandsaw post. I THOUGHT I remembered both of them from somewhere. Fun getting older...LOL.

    I have found so much info on the Festiva forum over the years, It's a great spot to check out if you own one of these cars. That's funny you found my mill post, I posted that right after building it! I have had a fun time modifying my Festiva over the past 3 years and the car is real fast and fun to drive, but I think It's time to find it a new home :( It's been a great little commuter but I just had a little baby and I guess priorities change, I don't want to drive my baby around in a high performance tunafish can on wheels :) Plus I have a old Datsun 510 wagon I have owned for years and I should finnish it one of these days.
