Yamaha big bear 350 was the second to have 4x4 I think the big bear line was probably some of the best atvs ever made they didn’t have any super innovations but they were tough as heck and many are still going strong today same with the Honda fourtrax

This is an excellent historical recollection of how us big red riders got to where we are today You maybe skipped over 1998 when Suzuki put out the 500 4x4 . It was the biggest at the time and I was the second one in Ontario Canada to purchase one . I've owned 3 Suzuki Quads 1994 230cc quadsport 1998 500 quadrunner 2019 750 kingquad Because the lack of attention to detail on the Ontario Suzuki rep side of things I will never own a Suzuki again . I really enjoyed your video and you guys did an excellent job on the history and research. Thanks for your time

Great stuff! Thanks man. I was thinking of being a kid in the 80’s and how much I loved atv’s and how exciting the times were with all the different machines that were comeing out. First sport qaud I saw was the “230 qaud sport” the thing blew me away later on I thought the Yamaha warrior was the coolest looking ride ever! I could go on and on about all of them! Hey Chad thanks for history lesson on ATVS and another great video, I think the Honda four Trax where definitely game changers because it was the origin for reliability for 1 ATV that crossover 3 decades also Chad you heard it hear first Honda will be the first to come out with CRUISE CONTROL on their ATVS starting in 2024 Honda Rubicon 600 or Rancher 450 it will be added to the DCT transmission 10 miles and hour max speed and you won’t have to push the thumb throttle, just hold on and enjoy the ride. I believe you skipped something in the 90's. I feel like the introduction of the Yamaha Grizzly in I believe 97 or 98 was very important. I am sure most people will point to the 660 and 700 versions as being head and shoulders above the original 600 model, and I would mostly agree. However, the 600 was at least one of the early if not the first of the big bore atv's. It had a rougher ride and was not as powerful as future models, but being a solid axle you were able to slide the rear end around like a giant version of a sport atv. In fact I never had trouble keeping up with friends that had sport atv's unless it was a banshee lol. It was the foundation of a legendary atv, and a very fun atv to own.

@@DirtObseXXion Yup. You're right. In the days before indoor plumbing, the ladies refused to go out in the middle of the cold winter night for a pee, so a used honey can (usually sold in one gallon cans) was placed somewhere in the house and emptied in the morning (usually by the adoring husband of course - lol). In today's world, the term "Honey Wagon" is slang for a vehicle used to collect raw sewage from septic tanks. Also known as a septic truck.

Nice video. A mention of Cannondale and the 400EX would have been cool. The EX was the first new sport quad offered after the consent decree expired. Speaking of consent decree, three wheelers were not banned. The manufacturers admitted no guilt. They agreed to stop making them to avoid litigation.

Three wheelers were never banned, as you say in your video. Public opinion about them, pressure from Uncle Sam, and the forth wheel introduced by Suzuki is what ended the 3-wheeler run. To this day, you can still manufacture in the US and sell three wheelers. The only ban related to 3-wheelers was in the 2000s when Honda and Kawasaki lobbied the US to ban the importation of 3-wheelers from China. But this was only because they didn’t want Chine to cut into their 4-wheeler market share.

I belive I said the Consent Decree "essentially" banned them. If nor, that'swhat I meant... But I thought mass production of 3wheelers is banned now, I believe since 2008.. They can be built, but can't be produced in any quantity, so that's why we see the one off builds and trike kits..

  • @SuperWhatever55

Three wheelers were not banned. Public opinion, pressure from Uncle Sam, and Suzuki adding a fourth wheel are what eliminated 3-wheelers. It was not until the 2000s, that importing of 3-wheelers was banned, not the 3-wheeler itself. The reason this importation ban was pushed by Honda and Kawasaki, they did not want China importing 3-wheelers and cutting into their market share. To this day, the manufacturing of 3-wheelers in the USA, and selling them, is not illegal or banned.
