Many people don't realize that Iverson was an offensive savant. His mastery of the midrange, knowledge of unexpected and unused angles, and ability to read the defense is almost unmatched. He gets called a chucker but in reality hes an extremely high bball IQ player

AI shot 43% from his career which if you put his career in context with the poor teammates and his natural handicap of his height, that % is fairly high. And the avg fg % for sgs is between the 43 to 46 percentile..

This video shows why A.I was and still is the best ball handler ever to touch a ball, cause by his third year within the league he only needed 1 and no more than 2 dribble moves to get pass his defender or zone defenders. Only top defenders playing all time great defense on him, could make A.I need to go to a third move, to then get to the rim or create space. This is my biggest problem I have with Kyrie Irving, cause it seem like he's alway going into a third dribble move or sometime 4th to get pass his defender or defenders. The guy waste to much time dribbling to fucking much and he's in his 6th year within the league. Kyrie should never have to go to his 3rd and especially 4th move to get to the rim or create space at this point within his career. Base on his speed and handle. Which is the reason why Kyrie can't carry a team as the main guy, is seriously injury prone and can't be mention within the same breath as A.I in ball handling or as a NBA players.

One thing I'd like to adding on the hip movement part is that Iverson on more than one occasion stated that defenders always made it too easy for him to get by because they telegraphed their defensive intentions through their body language, positioning and footwork; he claimed he could read it every time. That first cross/hesi was always simply to get feedback data to see what kind of a defensive scheme his defender is applying and to see what kind of defender the guy was. A.I was also extremely gifted in reading body language to so much detail needing only a glance, a talent which extended to outside basketball when he did artwork (he was real good at sketching and sculpting, majored in arts at college)

Devoid what u said is definitely true; I haven't been watching bball for too long (maybe 5 years). I have a friend that used to be so skilled, he often mentioned AI when talking about Bball, moves skills etc

what iverson differs most from current fast players is that for the whole game he runs at full speed with or without the ball. If basketball tracked running distance like soccer, he would have twice running distance than others on the floor, and by doing so basically broke entire team defense by creating space here and there. Thats why sixers worked so well with him even though not talented they all were hard workers who fit his playstyle

just wanna say one thing, at the part where you explained him hesitating instead of crossing over, because the defender was guarding the side where he was going to cross, theirs actually a really helpful 1 on 1 tip if you want to learn how to cross people pretty much every time with any crossover move, if the defenders guarding the ball side and not your shoulder, you should do a crossover, if the defender is guarding your shoulder, the side where the ball isn't, the crossover will never work, so you hesitate instead, so if the ball is in your left hand lets say, if the defenders i leaning his body to the rights side of your body, if you just do a hesitation, you'll beat your defender, if you cross it wont shake them really, or at all, if the defender is guarding the left side of your body, or in the middle, then thats when you would use the crossover with your left.

Been an AI fan since I was 13 (I'm 33 this year) and been playing basketball since 8. A lot of the details that you've laid out was studied by myself painstakenly back in the day move by move. I considered myself mastering AI's crossover back when I was at my peak (just the crossover, no need to flame), and your breakdown was onnn point! The mid-section of the body was the key, the selling point was really he really did move to that direction, then counters it by a hard stop (which kills your knees slowly as time goes on...believe me). Bringing the ball not only close to his feet, but the bounce it towards the right leg (he almost always crossed with his left hand), so it was pretty impossible to swipe the ball from the middle when he crosses it over. Man...all these years, this is the only video I've seen that mentions some of those details. There are good crossovers, and there are great ones. It's the smallest details executed to perfection that makes the move unique. Good on you guys!

This is the one everyone was waiting for. You took your time and were extremely thorough not missing a thing I don't think. The part where AI was so crafty with his forearm is lost on younger generations. These young cats watch players like LeBron drive from the top with full arm extension and think they can do it too because he doesn't get called for it. Also I didn't realize that AI finished solely with his right hand like that. Well done video sir.

This is the secret behind every thing. He hangs the ball by raising his elbow and shoulder along with the ball (while his hand is palm up position and ball behind his back a bit) and see if defender follow he pull the ball forward and snap his fingers to crossover and if defender not follow he does hesitation. While hanging the ball, he can go left, right, forward or pullback depending on defender movement. That's why it seems like he can go anywhere in the court unguardable.

You can sit back and analyze but once ur in it totally different...

with his crossover its so easy to forget about the rest of his game. like its crazy to look at how many moves and shot variations he had. almost every star uses some part of his game.

AI's awareness and use of not only change in speed but differences in speed and momentum in fractions of a second to determine moves is like watching an ace fighter pilot seamlessly fly through a cloud of enemies.

We most remember AI for his crossovers but damn that hesi was nasty!

Anyone that says his crossover was overrated is actually insane. His mentality as a scorer and shot creator is unmatched till this day. They knew he was going to bust it out and still couldn’t guard it. You have to understand he had combos and counters to his crossover and moves this guy was absolutely phenomenal !!🔥🔥🔥

100% true. It looks better, but it's not better basketball. It's the same thing when Kobe was around about how he had better handles than MJ. MJ made quick and decisive moves and wasted no movements or time doing flashy between the legs stuff like you see Kyrie or Harden do all the time.

Rasha Tor There’s a difference between wasting time and just being fast. Allen Iverson was very fast. So all he really had to do was move his BODY. Kyrie who might be a bit slower needs to use the ball for deception. Lets not forget that as time progresses players get better and so will the defense.

I wanna give some comment to the video. I started playing basketball when I was 19 because i've always played soccer in Spain as a goalkeeper in a high level up until that age really. I started balling for fun and I ended up hooked trying to imrpove every time. Right now i'm working in my crossover and my jumpshot and while studying MANY NBA players i found something wierd that nobody seems to notice and I think is very important. If you look closely, you can see how AI (also Derrick Rose and in many ocassions D Wade) use the Split Step in the majority of their crossovers. These two are known for their explosive first step and this is the main reason. I invite anyone to check players like Russel Westbrook, Ja Morant, Donovan Mitchell, Jamal Murray and many more who don't shift their weight brom the rear leg to the front one during the crossover move. They just step and bounce the other way. It is obvious that it works for them but if anyone is trying to get a hang of the AI cross, give it a try and i think it would help a lot. AI and Rose even used it this way while chaining crosses, and adding that regular split step move to your arsenal will also improve your first step explosiveness. Anyway, I wanted to try and help anyone and while at it the faster and the lower that ball crosses the better.

My game is a mix of a.i and m.j my two favorite players of all time I owe it to them for being nice and never giving up when the odds are against me

And if it doesn’t it’s works like a triple threat. If he doesn’t move just hesitate and fake the opposite way. Step 1 gallop hop in the air Step 2 land in a sprinting position with the back foot landing first Step 3 lean with your shoulders and fake your eyes one way and cross the defender Step 4 push of you second step and run for it This does take flexibility and bounce

Tyreke Evans also has a habit of finishing with his right hand similar to Iverson despite finishing with the same hand all the time both players can still get buckets at the rim
