Listen I probably should have put a disclaimer somewhere in here but I'm an online entertainer, a lot of my commentary is pointed for comedic effect and I'm well aware that it's "just a show" lmao. Idk if I came off harsher in this video than normal or what but I am a FAN of the show and I very much appreciate this cast and the fact that they were all willing to come back and entertain us for a few weeks. Jeez lol, it's not that serious and it's not the end of the world if you don't agree with me. The internet is wild sometimes.

One of the most bizarrely unsatisfying aspects of this is that it ended up feeling like almost everyone was ‘robbed’ simultaneously Both Jaida and the Viv were robbed of top-4 spots despite great track records through contrived endgame twists, Shea was robbed of dignity in the finale due to benefitting unfairly from said endgame twists, and Monet was robbed of the win given the purported format despite clearly slaying both of her lip-syncs. Then Jinkx deserved her overall win but was robbed of the opportunity to come out looking victorious after being clearly out-performed in both finale lip-syncs, and Raja had to earn hers on the back of a track record that painted her as a weak link when she was actually consistently excellent throughout. A bit of a mess overall, though at least the winning pair were deserving in the end

So, I'll start off by saying that I really, really enjoyed AS7. It was good to see so many of the queens that I love, and I, too, REALLY enjoyed Yvie this season. It was nice to watch a season where I would've been happy to see ANY of the queens take the crown. Having said that, I've ALWAYS disliked the Lip-Sync for the Crown mechanic. I didn't like it in Season 9 (no offense AT ALL to Sasha Velour... she's an amazing queen), but seeing Shea and Trinity dominate the competition all season only to bow out unceremoniously in the end was a bummer. I really didn't want to see that happen again this season. It would've been a crime for Jinkx to leave without the crown after having won half of the challenges, and delivering virtually the best Snatch Game of the entire series. Making her compete for her win against two queens that outshone her in the Lip-Sync challenge was a bad decision (since it renders the lip sync pointless). Jinkx ALREADY secured her win in the competition. I wish they would just do a big finale where all the queens get to perform purely for entertainment, and crown the queen who's won the most challenges (unless there's a tie). We don't need to be kept in suspense. By the finale, you pretty much KNOW who deserves to win.

  • @marinemanaphy101

Exactly, it’s not a bad thing for an outcome to become clearer/more predictable over the course of a season. Same with any competition. @@ivananarchy17 I enjoyed AS7, but dislike the lip sync for the crown mechanic. I don't like it in ANY season. I have always found the talent show to be one of the most underutilized challenges for the queens. The opportunity to have 60 seconds on stage to do whatever you want is so good and I wish that queens would do more than just try to launch their next single. I also wish that the finale was more like the talent show. The solo performances get close to being decent but the custom songs usually suck or are SO on the nose for the storyline for the queen. Season 12 was great because they just said "do whatever you want and we'll get you rights to a song if you want" and you really got to see the queens excel at what they were good at instead of just having to do a live lip sync for no reason.

  • @alyssagangi5341

    @alyssagangi5341

They needed to have the variety show challenge and a separate lip sync extravaganza challenge. The lip sync challenge should be the girls do a solo act and can pick the song (can be their own song), costumes, set etc. By having a challenge like that, it would help avoid the girls using the variety show as means to highlight their new single. Even using that as the finale mechanic would be better, like in season 7. Maybe they need to exclude lip syncing from the variety show, only live singing.

  • @marinemanaphy101

I think part of the difficulty is that a lot of drag queens necessarily share a pretty similar pool of skills, and a lot of those skills aren’t really the kinds of things that can be performed in 60 seconds so they end up pigeonholed into a pretty limited number of options. Singing, dancing, and lipsyncing can happen in a minute, but many of those drag related skills like makeup or sewing aren’t really one-minute talents - even stuff like standup needs a little more time to really get going. Bumping up the maximum allowable time to 3-5 minutes would do a lot to open up options for queens in the talent show.

getting stars was announced in episode one as the way to determine who would be in the final 4. they then go on to lip-sync for the crown. However they then should have played it straight and not messed around giving free stars away or 3 stars in the final and then people would have said fair enough they are the strongest through out the competition go lip-sync for the crown. Instead because of star system people who were strong didn't get into the top 4, and the person with the most stars and had the strongest lip sync didn't win the crown.

Shae's joke about "the true power of the plunger" actually had me thinking on a cool way to make the lipsync for the crown kinda fun: the playlist. Before filming starts, all queens makes a wishlist of songs they would love to lipsync on the show, the legal team sees if they have clearance for them and they go back and forth for a while until each queen has 1 or 2 plausible songs that they like and that the show could get the rights to, and getting blocked means your song gets added to the roster, or an extra box or something, representing that you were seen as a threat and that you have more incentive to fight harder to get into the top. It could be handled as a half twist, where only the blocked queens know about it and can't tell others (for whatever reason) and maybe even block queens who they think would've pick songs that they themselves could slay in. It does get revealed as everyone is blocked, or maybe in this version, not everyone would find out, but you reveal it to the audience at the start: whoever is blocked is less likely to reach the final fight but gets a sort of say on how it plays out. I mean, obviously my absolute favorite version doesn't involve the plunger, it would be each queen choosing one song and the entire lipsync battles being ones the queens chose, like everyone has a one in eight chance to do their jam. As a producer, it's easy as hell to manipulate which song actually comes out for each case, so you can have Jinkx do Patty LuPone's version of "Ladies Who Lunch" against Monet and make it very easy on the editors to make her undisputed.

Of course they would want Jinkx, the multitalented lovable weirdo from one of the best drag race seasons, as a winner, it was the best and safest choice to make. So why oh why, would they do her, Monet and all the other contestants dirty like that? Having a challenge that in the end wouldn't matter on the overall result just damaged the winner's storyline. Also, I feel bad for Yvie not winning any cash despite being the only one that still knows how to do reveals and when she objectively won the lip syncs Edit: Having done a little rewatch, I just realized that the final lip sync should have been the monologue one. My honest opinion is that the last two episodes aren't enough to ruin this wonderful season. And, yes, you can make an argument about everyone being robbed, including production, your grandma and a tree, I think it was mostly fair. Hell, even the 3-stars wouldn't affect much (aka the top 2 would still happen). And if they wanted Shea so much (not saying it was rigged in her favor), just make it 2-stars, I bet a lot less people would be mad about it (which makes these plot-twists even dumber). The lip sync for the crown tho, yikes. Just let it die already, I thought season 14 was going in that direction but nop! And as a side note, I'd argue that winners don't always equal the best track record, instead who had the best storyline goes more into account. Who was the true "protagonist" of the season tends to win. It just so happens that most of the time the person with the best track record has a good storyline. That's why people like Sasha, Yvie or Willow. They weren't the best track record-wise but are loved as winners. Sometimes the lip-sync for the crown CAN push a certain queen into the spotlight and then the crown but it'll cause more harm than good. This season being a prime example. (I didn't see a lot of people questioning Jinkx's win, just criticizing the finale, but I avoid interacting with the fandom beyond surface level so i might be wrong)

They needed more stars, just generally. There weren't enough in the season for the queens hence why they had the "give a star" episode and the 3 star reward. What they should have done is lipsync winner blocks but loser gives away a star (this maybe swapped around as winning and being loved for giving a star might be a better story line). This would allow alliances to come into play more and make queens back each other or betray other queens.

Jinks won with Judy, for me, so I'm happy with the outcome but I understand why people get upset. What I don't understand is letting out ruin your whole day and death threats. It really is just a reality show at the end of the day. If you're going to blame anyone, blame production and ultimately WOW 🤷‍♀️

The show has become so overproduced, it's madness. I thought it got better this season but in the variety show episode everything was clear. It was planned from the beginning that queens from older seasons win to reintroduce them to a newer audience. And those queens were of course Jinkx for the main win and Raja for the consolidation price. And the narrative for the finale was history repeating. Jinkx against the rest of the world. In season 5 it was Rolaskatox, now it was 3 All Stars winners. Through the 3 star twist and not giving Raja the challange win for this extraordinary performance in the variety show, she conveniently could compete for the 50.000$ price and won it of course. Drag Race should really stop this overproduction. The international spin offs are so much better (i mean those that are not hosted or heavily influenced by Rupaul, especially Drag Race Espana) as the competition develops much more naturally .

Honestly, it's to a point where they are trying too hard to make the international seasons important to the main franchise. We didn't see that with Top Model, American Idol vs the rest, or any of these other shows. I think really only Big Brother and Strictly/ Dancing With the Stars would really compare tbh but even so... I have no idea who won Australia or season three of UK (considering there were two seasons in the same year), or season 2 of Canada. I know who won season 13 but I really don't. I know Willow Pill won last season but even then I don't. I think season 12 was the end of an era (big argument it ended in season 9) and now we just wait to see when Ru retires and they do one or two seasons with either Bob, Alaska, or Bianca as the host before it gets canceled. The days of the best person winning are over with and queens over a certain age either don't apply/ get picked for the show anymore when a lot of them are more established than the social media girls that get picked now a days. You also have so many YT channels with reviews where you know the queens are more qualified than who is being judged as well.

I think the pity stars in the middle weren’t inherently bad - sure, it was clear production wanted to keep everyone in the game and didn’t want anyone to pull ahead too far, but there was an element of strategy to them for the queens who handed them out. The problem imo is that the blocking mechanic was poorly conceptualized - “Block another queen from a star next week, except you don’t know what next week will be” is stupid. There needed to be some way for queens to make an informed decision about how they were blocking people and drag race didn’t give them one. Sure, you could always just block the front runner, but that’s how Jinkx ended up blocked for a design challenge. And I’m certain production did this deliberately - I don’t think that that episode would’ve been a design challenge if Jinkx hadn’t been blocked. The order of the challenges was set on the fly to accommodate/accentuate the blocks. The reason why Mario Party bullshit works for Mario Party is because you know it’s gonna happen. AS7 could’ve avoided that by making it clearer that these mechanics existed. Nobody gets to the end of a game of Mario and is surprised to see bonus stars handed out, it’s one of the staples of the franchise for the winner of a Mario Party game to be determined more by chance than skill. If Ru had told the queens - or even just the audience - what the rules were from the jump I think it would’ve been more enjoyable. A better blocking system would’ve given the queens the ability to rely on strategy rather than divination, and more openness about how stars will be handed out like the pity stars from the jump would’ve made it a lot less gimmicky. Last thing, I promise, but there needed to be more stars earned throughout the season. Allowing everyone to coalesce around 2-4 stars was pretty anticlimactic, and the show would’ve benefitted from stealing more mechanics from party games like Mario Party or Fuzion Frenzy. In those games, when you win a mini game, you don’t just get a W - you get scaling points based on performance. First place in FF gets 6 points, second gets 4, third gets 2, and fourth gets 0. *Especially* for a season where they’re not sending people home and relying *so heavily* on track record, something like this was necessary to reflect that there’s more than two successful queens every week. Let the top two performers still lip sync to block and get the cash, but offer a sliding scale - first place in a single challenge gets 7 stars, second place gets 5, third gets 3, fourth place gets 1, and everyone else gets none. Maybe even allow the lip sync to determine who gets 7 and who gets 5 stars. This gives the queens a *lot* more routes to the finale and makes the overall scoring look way, *way* more exciting because human beings are simple. Big numbers are dramatic to us even if they could be represented the same as a smaller number. In a normal season, 1 winner for a challenge and 2 losers who lip sync makes sense, bc that’s usually a pretty reasonable expectation in terms of average performance for a given challenge. In this season, the queens are all-winners, and so it’s expected that they’ll each have individual strengths and weaknesses but broadly will be all good contestants. A scoring system for this concept, therefore, needs to be a scoring system that doesn’t just measure if you were *good*, but how good you were relative to the other queens. It also means that queens aren’t being snubbed so much, and gives production a lot more wiggle room to keep a queen like Shea or Raja in the running when they were always good but the judges couldn’t justify giving them a top 2 position. I didn’t mean to write an essay, my bad lol. Point is that the format really could’ve been way, way better both for the viewers and the queens with just a few minor tweaks - give the queens more information so that they can act more strategically rather than just taking shots in the dark and allowing production to fill in the blanks, let everyone know in advance that mechanics like pity stars or extra-points rounds exist so they can prepare for them, and implement a better scoring system that does a better job of rewarding queens on a sliding scale that’s more conducive to dramatic twists and turns.

Honestly this is the best idea! Something similar was done on painted with Raven, where you got 3 points for winning, 2 points for being medium, and 1 for losing plus 1 person was getting blocked - that ended up with more well-rounded final 3 who were all good, and would have allowed Raja and Shea to get much closer to the top deservingly, instead of Shea having to be rescued with 3 stars. I mean, I still think Raja should have won 2 more challenges but that's a whole other story :D

As a viewer, who until watching this video knew nothing about how the queens actually felt (according to their tweets) or anything behind the scenes, I immensely enjoyed this season. It’s my favorite All Stars season apart from All Stars 2. The way it was edited made it look as though the queens all had a great time and were excited to be there. It conveyed a very positive atmosphere, which I thought was a nice change of pace compared to regular seasons. These queens all know each other or have worked with each other so it made sense that the rapport seemed more convivial. It sucks to hear that this may not have been the case for the queens, who deserve the world. I do hate lip sync for the crown for the same reasons Kayla cites. Having the individual performances onstage is cool and I like that but not lip sync for the crown. I was rooting for Jinkx from the beginning (shocker) and came to love Raja more as the season went on (that was in part bc she’s fantastic and production highlighting her at the right times). So I’m pleased with the winners, but I agree that they didn’t win their lip syncs. I also didn’t care for how the talent show was worth three stars and thought if they really wanted it to have stakes, it could have been worth two stars. Then it would be a lot closer as to who would go to the finale.

I still don’t understand why people invalidate performance queens who thrive during a lip sync so much. News flash, that’s MOST of a drag queens job. Maybe a lot of the fan base doesn’t actually attend drag shows, but they are not set up like drag race and the Queens keeping people coming to bars are not doing corny acting performances and a roast in most cases. It’s not the easiest thing to perform and hold an audiences attention by dancing your ass off or weaving in a cohesive storyline in 6 minutes or less. So let’s change this narrative that lip sync artists aren’t valid but fashion, comedy, etc. queens are.

Yet people in the fan base more often say that the other Queens are more talented or more relevant which puts comedy over performance. People literally complain about lip sync heavy episodes, but it's not the lip syncing that should be the problem because that IS what drag is about in the real world. The problem should be that not every Queen can manage to do a lip sync well.

I think that production messed up slightly with casting here. Looking at the cast it’s clear that jinkx is the funniest and will win almost every comedy challenge or comedy adjacent challenge (5/6). Production knew this yet chose to cast jinkx with little competition in this area, the Vivienne and raja proved to be strong competition for the top spots but there was no one there truly on jinkx’s level of comedy as this can only be matched by very few queens ( of the winners arguably only bob Alaska and bianca). All of the winners on this season have won comedy challenges in the past but against jinkx they truly stood little chance. This would be okay if the split of challenges was more even however there was only 3/4 performance challenges and 2 look challenges. This meant the rest of the cast was left fighting over the few remaining stars in their expertises. This provided the worst outcome for all-rounder type queens like shea and yvie who won their seasons through consistently doing well in challenges but in a season where certain queens will dominate a category ( jinkx is gonna be the funniest, jaida and trinity will make the best looks, Monet will dance you under the table and write a killer verse doing it) they were left struggling to break through. These queens are great and worked great together, but the balance between the skills of the queens and the challenges was all wrong.

We'd seen her lipsync a grand total of *twice* before this season and kill one (against Detox) and do pretty strong in the other (The Beginning). Sure, she doesn't dance or pull stunts and her camp approach doesn't work for everything (see: Kings and Queens - where she was still better than Trinity just... doing what we've seen Trinity do a million times), but you can tell when she feels and acts a song and I'd rather watch that than expressionless dancing. I think the Judas lipsync is a perfect example and I also think she did well in Swish Swish, well enough to justify a win. Monet was fantastic and sure we can infer that editing may have made out Monet to not be as good but Jinkx was still good.

Nah, you lost me when you started questioning Sasha deserving her crown. If we wanna discuss who had the most challenge wins, then we should perhaps question whether those wins are justified or are the wins going to the production favourite. It was evident that Shea was the production's darling throughout Season 9. The excitement of the lip sync for the crown is that Sasha's performance defied how production probably originally would have been able to create the show and the ultimate winner. It was an episode where the best drag artist won...

Ironically and somewhat hilariously, the problem with this finale was the same problem as as4 with monet and trinity, in that one finalist did better throughout the competition but then clearly lost the lip sync. In this finale they knew they couldn't do again what they did in as4 and have a tie so they clearly just bit the bullet and gave it to the track record winner (which I think they ought to have also done for as4 but that's just me).

This is hit the nail on the head in every way. I love both monet and jinkx. Not gonna lie I was excited for the lipsync for the crown moment solely because it gave a fair chance for monet to win. We’ve seen it so many times where the last lipsync completely throws negates a season. N we as fans are a little salty it didn’t benefit this time around. Every time a finale comes around the debate of lipsync vs track record comes up and people conveniently switch sides for their faves. It would’ve been smarter had they made a lipsync challenge midway in the competition and that winner from that got multiple stars

  • @randomname1924

Honestly, they should’ve done an “old school” coronation for the top 4, the SAHDH or whatever gave enough lip syncs for one episode. If they really wanted to give Raja the extra money (bc Yvie won that lip sync let’s be honest), they could’ve made it a ball challenge or smth instead, which could fill up the episode nicely.

I'm actually shocked that people are pissed off over the finale. The judges made it clear they were taking into account the queen's overall performance in the competition. And honestly, that's how it should be. Why should one lip sync supersede everything that comes before it. Wouldn't it make the competition feel all the more pointless if a queen could win five challenges, dominate the entire competition, and not get the crown because of one singular lip sync? in this case, the fans are totally in the wrong, and it's really the show's fault for fostering this kind of sentiment, after creating such a flawed finale format.

To the people arguing that not "not everyone is mad" at this finale, just install the like/dislike extension and check the VH1 upload of the final lipsync. It has the highest dislike ratio of any lip sync this season even beating out the objectively horrible Kings and Queens one. This is a pretty clear metric that this finale was indeed controversial, which is wild considering that Jinkx was the favorite to win when the cast was announced and pretty much remained the favorite during the entire season.

I am getting into this way too much. It's just a show but. It's something that annoyed me since UK.v.The World. I agree with what you're saying, and I'm also going to point to UK vs The World, where Pangina was voting based on track record (week by week) and she got so much hate like she was causing drama. So yeah, the fact that people don't agree with this win, because Drag Race spent years telling its audience that no matter how well you did, it comes down to a lip sync - makes total sense to me. Drag Race put into play that track record didn't matter. If they had kept the importance of track record throughout all of the seasons maybe we wouldn't have the issuesthey are having now. Jinkx (I love her so much, she is one my favourite Queens from the show) lost that Lip sync. Drag Race drummed into us that that last lip sync determined who won. I'm glad that she won yes, but Drag Race set up this rule and didn't follow it. This bit them in the ass, just as the vote bit them in the ass in UK vs the World.

Jinkx definitely didn't win the lipsync smackdown (I think she dominated Shea in Judas but Monet did do better in Swish Swish) but it wasn't so much of a blowout to where it made up for the lead Jinkx had the entire season, Monet failed in several challenges she was the worst in both the Draguation Speeches and Fairytale Justice, she was at the bottom for both design challenges, literally the only challenges she really succeeded in were verse/dancing challenges. Lipsyncing isn't the only skill a drag queen has and isn't the decision maker on who should win the entire season, the lipsync for the crown being the finale was dumb to begin with and specifically the fact that they chose all songs that were outside of the frontrunners performance style/comfort zone was a mistake by production. Jinkx just slayed the season too hard for anyone else to win, she won before this episode even aired it was just filler to get us to that point
