This season also propelled Miss Fame to the height of the fashion industry, as she’s regularly seen on covers/runways and high budget fashion shows since then. Also Jasmine Masters becoming immortalised in memes and gifs that resurface all the time. Kasha hosting a successful drag story time in many libraries for years now. I also wish the rest of the cast got more out if it, but I believe that this season has had a good deal of queens making it into the mainstream, more than all the other following seasons

The way Trix and Katy really have become these huge stars when i remember falling in love with Katya during the seasons airing is such an amazing journey.

I feel like an aspect that hurt Ginger’s win equity is her time in Untucked. She comes off as so pompous and confrontational throughout the season that even me, a Ginger fan, was really soured on her. The final 4 untucked especially. They’re about to end their time filming the show and Ginger spends it dressing down Pearl and Violet for being "inferior" performers. It’s so bad to the point Kennedy is calling her out for her attitude. It ends Untucked on a bitter note and almost Uno Reverses Violet’s villain arc into a hero arc in one episode. Ginger seemed to forget Untucked is “half the story” and she's way more judgmental to the point it doesn’t match her main show southern belle persona at all. Violet was at least more consistent a personality between the two and I could see that helping her eke out the win

rewatching s7, what finally made me understand violet as a winner for me was that untucked. her defending pearl, her opinion on comparing drag styles, and especially her genuine compliments towards kennedy - she really came across to me as a passionate artist who, despite her hoity toity attitude, really just wanted to share her craft with the world

Imo Violet is the only winner option for this season due to the main theme of old school vs new school. She might represent the new school way of drag but she was raised in the pageant scene of Atlanta and has such a clear respect for more old school styles of drag. That’s why she perfectly encapsulates the season for me as she doesn’t really fall into one side of the arguement but instead celebrates both drag forms, whereas someone like Ginger was actively bashing the new school drag style during her time on the season (though I’m sure she’s changed her tune in the years after).

The thing is....Katya should not have been in the bottom 2 in the Hello Kitty challenge in the first place. Her speech was funnier than everyone else...and her look wasnt bad.

I think Katya herself said in Unhhh S7 reacts episode that that costume wasn't finished. And that she mind went blank and she couldn't finish the costume. Although, I am not sure if the judges can tell or not.

it was awful, the last look was just a mess, I don't think Katya would even defend it tbh. Kennedy's look was so much more cohesive and clean. Pearl shouldve been the other btm2 queen

I remember the one notable thing in the midst of all the talking about the season as a whole was that it had some of the most successful/biggest stars of the franchise, and I don't think any of us could have seen how much of a powerhouse the duo of Trixie and Katya would have been until that first UNHhhh video came out

Actually, they did an episode for a WoW webseries before UNHhhh called Besties For Cash. It was their chemistry in that episode that made fans push for WoW to give them their own show, cause many of us didn't know how close they were because it wasn't shown at all in the edit of the show.

Seven was my first time through as well. I adored Katya from the very first episode. My other favorites were Kasha, Ginger, and KENNEDY. I was SO confused by all the hate Kennedy got over the course of the season, especially after Katya went home.

I know people who’ve never watched drag race but love trixie and katya. And it’s so wild to me that they have such a large impact

Seems like s8 overcorrected by having Bob as the winner (and season protagonist). S9 feels to me the last “organic” season where the production hand felt more limited by letting Aja organically go early, Valentina not being saved, and even Sasha winning based on their own plot twist they introduced with the new lip sync for the crown format.

the thing with s9 and s13 is that to me those 2 seasons feel like total opposites. s9 feels like the most fair judged season of drag race ever (in terms of placements) all eliminations are justified. and even if there is production meddling, its so subtle you actually feel like everyone there has a chance to win, while s13 on the other hand is just so blatant with the placement rigging, the manufactured btm2s and queens getting eliminated based on their storylines that its hard to watch even the queens that are supposed to be the main characters. Also love the parallels of s13 having a god awful finale lip syncs and amazing lip syncs back to back in the regular season, and s9 having just meh lip syncs on the season and AMAZING finale lip syncs. (also more parallels, s9 introduced the LSFTC and s13 was the final LSFTC)

The thing that is really bad about season 7 is that it was when the toxic teen fans started going after seasoned queens like Ginger, Jasmine and Kennedy for throwing shade and cutting up, while excusing similar (yet not nearly as funny) behavior from Violet, Pearl and Max (you just have to watch the season if you don't agree, it is very clear).

I dont think thats true, Imo Violet was the one who was shady and arrogant, but it was in terms of just being the drag queen, while Gigner Kennedy and Jasmine were dissmisive and disrespectful to the other styles of drag. Specifically Ginger to Max, Jasmine to Trixie and Kennedy to Pearl.

I think it is because Violet grew as a person throughout the season and was very self aware of her behaviour. Ginger and Kennedy were not, and seemed to look at themselves as saints sometimes.

One of my fav moments in rpdr fandom history is how a solid majority of people who were indifferent to Violet were converted overnight when she came back to crown Bob in that god damned dress. I was one of those people, it was really moving and exciting to be “won over” so instantaneously like that. I’m still fascinated by my own reaction because I saw her entire run in a different light after that. When I rewatched S7 I remember thinking “oh I get it now” and to this day I’m still really happy that she won.

I felt to a degree like Producers were hesitant to crown Ginger BECAUSE Jinkx and Bianca had been so successful. From where I was sitting it seemed like seasons six and seven brought in a much younger, whiter, viewing demographic - so seeing the Producers push younger, trendier “fashion” queens like Pearl, Violet, and to some degree Miss Fame, felt like a conscious effort to present another side of drag, something younger and more aesthetically driven than the campier more classical drag styles of Ginger / Kennedy. ❤

Season 7 was the first one I watched because I’m my art class you were only allowed to talk about Drag Race or American Horror Story, Those were the days…

Even know it’s a pain for the Girls to throw away 2 looks but I really like the runway mini challenge where it’s 2 looks for like Spring / Autumn / whatever. It gives you immediate what each queens style is.

I think it's possible that they wanted Ginger to win at first but definitely switched it for Violet as the show went on. At some point, the Violet villain narrative took a shift for sure. I always feel like Ru is trying to make a statement with the winners, and actually Bianca and Jinx being classic hilarious comedy queen/performers worked against Ginger, because after two winners like that (and especially if you look at the queens that they won against--- Alaska, Detox, Adore etc) there was the need and shift to a younger, different version of drag to keep things fresh. So Violet's win made a lot of sense and her legacy (along with Fame, Max, Pearl's) is very obvious--- you can argue for better or for worse, but I'd say it opened it up to different possibilities. I remember how Marcia x3 said on Trixie's recent video that Max was her favourite contestant. This cast arguably has the biggest number of stars for sure. I think it's really funny you said that S13 is the biggest joke now because Miik came out from that season and Miik and Violet are bffs now. I'll always have a soft spot for S7 because I really could see the shift towards the new type of drag. And I'd say that Violet is hardly just a look queen, I've seen her in performance and she is amazing. I still remember the WoW documentary where Latrice saying something like you can get so angry with Violet because of her tardiness, but when you watch her perform, it is genuinely so moving and amazing.

Judging was insanely frustrating. They had storylines and didn't bother to hide it, actually they didn't try to make it make sense at all. Untucked was so poorly combined to capture as many shady facial expressions as possible. Violet clearly should've been in the bottom at least once, but I guess they had to push her when they realized she's doing something original and Ginger didn't slay that hard. If not those two, I think Katya actually had a chance to win this with generally good performances and runways. Editing in her favor would be possible and we've already seen even more manipulated edits. Kandy Ho got... that and for what. They also missed every chance to eliminate people when it made sense so in the end nothing fell into place. Both times Trixie was eliminated, she did okay. Same with others. They could have easily done a slightly different order.

Given just how much confessional time and her having the 2nd biggest storyline after Fame, im pretty sure production in the latter part of the season had realized how special Katya was. The problem came in that last design challenge where Katya basically imploded, which should have been a challenge that she should have topped/won. In retrospect it was actually good that Katya didn't go further, given all of the "events" that transpired during her post-drag race career.

I still think its insane that once the teaser came out for season 7 and Katya said "I just want to steal stuff", the fandom HATED her calling her a "Willam knockoff" and now shes one of the most beloved queens that ever.

It’s one of the seasons I routinely go back to watch, I think the personalities of the queens is my main motivation but I also remember it for really noticing the heavy production and the rise of the toxic fandom

I love that seasons 7 and 9 are becoming some of the more beloved seasons. Like I've seen so much love for them lately. I know that its because of the casts and not exactly the seasons themselves, but it's still nice to see.

I think Season retrospective videos would be very fun, mainly to hear from your perspective of course. I think the biggest aspect about Season 7 that I look back on a lot is how it REALLY was tailor made for Ginger to win due to the lineup of challenges of that season (and it's kinda insane that she has NEVER won a season). Obviously it's also was a double edge sword due to the lack of variety not fitting a portion of the cast's skills (mainly the look queens) which led to various hits and misses.

The John Waters musical challenge is one of the best ever! I'm so glad they had a musical format, it was hilarious.

I'm dying to hear more about Untucked. I'd already binged several seasons before I was told I was missing out on like, half the show essentially, by not watching it. I don't even think I knew it existed. Now I'm not really interested in going back and trying to remember what was going on and watching it on its own!

Violet Chachki is a legend, she's an icon, and she IS the moment! 🙏

My opinion is that Violet is definitely well deserved winner. Definitely o more deserved than other later seasons. I don think Ginger should have won because there were some challenges that she did not deserve to win. Ginger was just bitter and unlikeable. Violet had it all, Charisma, Uniqueness Nerve and Talent. To this day, she is one of my favorites by far.

I remember somewhere that actually they were looking for a young fashion queen to win from the get go, cause Rupaul said something like that in her podcast. However, it's weird for me that the season wasn't set up to be a fashion focused season with multiple design challenges if that's the case. You have a fashion queen winning a comedy heavy season with a majority of fashion focused cast. Plus, some of the most controversial decision making ever (riggory always happened, but Trixie losing that lip sync against Pearl was a crime and I'm not even a Trixie stan or anything). Season 7 is not even close the worst season for me, I actually think 13, 10 and 11 are a lot worse.

Idc, I think Violet is one of the most important and necessary winners the show have had. Ginger could not have pulled that of.

I just rewatched this season. It feels off because the queens come off like they don’t like each other at all lol. They were also mean to each other in a way that felt mean mean instead of shadey mean like early seasons.

"Flame me in the comments, f*ckers, i live for it" is such an iconic quote. 😂You just earned a new subscriber.

S7 was airing when I first found Drag Race. I remember watching the first few episodes that had been released, getting tired of it (likely cause of the unjust eliminations, riggory and Violet's attitude in the beginning). Then when I found out a month or so later that Violet had won, I was absolutely astounded. I had to go back and watch the full thing, as well as the earlier seasons. Upon reflection, Violet won fair and square and it was Ginger's attitude in Untucked in the Top 4 that lost her the crown, as well as her involvement in the Bitter Old Lady Brigade.

I agree with mostly everything except that Ginger should’ve won. I feel like Violet wasn’t the villain of the season? The queens just didn’t like her because she was full of herself. Ginger (no hate to her ofc) WAS the villain, she stirred the pot in Untucked and talked so much smack about the queens behind their backs. I think crowning 3 comedy queens back to back (5 considering Bob and Alaska won right after S7) would’ve made the show feel really dry.

Show Ginger seems like a complètement different character than Untucked Ginger. And bc Untucked wasn't on WOW, I think that happened coincidentally. I have never thought that Ginger was supposed to win or meant to win. It seemed like Violet was the frontrunner from the very beginning. (She literally won the first challenge.) I also don't think Ru crowned Violet because of how popular she was, because she wasn't. I think it's who she always intended on crowning, same with Aquaria in S10. And Ru could have crowned Ginger in AS6 if she wanted, but again she didn't 😂

S7 also has, in my opinion, the best snatch game of RPDR

This is such a good video, you always kill it when discussing television, but this one is really fun and interesting! It's also a delight hearing more about your drag race opinions/experience, so finding out season 7 was your first season was so cool to learn! My first season was season 2 :]

The season felt like it was made for Ginger, but her attitude towards the end made it easy for production to start making her the villain and give Violet a hero arc. And honestly Violet’s drag and impact makes me feel like the right call was made

I watched RPDR seasons all over the place. Season 12 first, then 6, and then idk. But season 7 has always had a special place for me. It’s fun and different and even the bad challenges were entertaining! Loved this video!

1. So much Violet erasure here. The problem is probably that you began with s7, because if you'd watched from s1 you, might have had a better appreciation of the kind of innovation Violet brought in terms of aesthetics. And it wasn't just stuff she brought from home, unlike the other s7 looks queens, and so many others (ahem, Symone) in later seasons.. Her looks have stood the test of time and so has her career. And she won 3, not 1 challenge. 2. A lot of what you're saying is revisionist because other than Katya, nobody (not Violet, not Trixie, not Ginger) was particularly popular among the fandom. They were all very polarizing. Trixie grew her fanbase almost entirely outside of Drag Race, and WOW didn't put her together with Katya for their show, they did that independently and WOW approached them because they were successful. Ginger Minj was never meant to be the winner, because she was given a villain-y edit from start to end. Even Pearl & Violet got a redemptive arc. Performance-wise, absolutely the right person won s7, and just because you prefer comedy queens doesn't invalidate Violet's win.

@lucasamm she's not underrated by those with taste. But for some reason, Trixie and Katya are considered the breakout stars of the season. I think they're both very talented, but Trixie has never been very good at Drag Race (despite somehow winning AS3). I just don't get the appeal of their friendship, personally.

Season 7 was my first too. I wonder if that shaped how much I care about runway presentation. For a lot of the people I’ve watched drag race with, it seems like the runway look is a fun little bonus that doesn’t really mean anything. But for me it’s an important part of their package that week. Not as important as main challenge, but like at least ~35%. The looks on season 7 were usually so polished, and the biggest thing for me, were a little conceptual or told a story. I think you’re right that this season really changed what’s expected aesthetically.

Ginger would've had the season if it wasn't for the confessional and untucked moments which made most of the fandom dislike her, because it's clear that the season was designed for her to win, with many acting challenges. Another factor that made her lose was that violet was very consistent through out the season, so she won. Max elimination was also unfair, she at least deserved to be at top 5, but of course production pushed Pearl because she was hot out of drag and the fandom liked her. I do like Pearl, but her "redemption" to me wasn't good enough to put her on the top 3...

Max's 'Death becomes her' look still influences my style to this day. (It's how a goth survives hot summers) Yes it's simple but it's iconic and her trademark hair coulour fits _so_ well.

The season just reeks of production meddling unfortunately. The outcome of the “dreaming” lip sync being the most blatant example in the history of the show. It’s easier to enjoy the season now knowing competitive integrity was never their main priority but at the time it was annoying. It’s decent overall but season 7 might still be one of the stinkiest seasons of rpdr

I feel badly for Ginger Minj, because I feel she's been put in two fuckin all stars seasons in which ahe had ZERO chance of winning. All Stars 2 was for Alaska. It was a love letter to Alaska and no-one else had a chance. Season 5 or 6 or whatever was going to Sonique so Ru could put the whole "trains" fiasco to bed. Ginger has never had a real shot.

This is one of my favorite seasons! I started watching rpdr when it started airing on Netflix (like 2013?) the first three or four seasons were up back then.

I am from Europe and one of those people that was a Trixie and Katya fan before having ever seen a single episode of drag race. Started watching UNHhhh around 2018 and only started watching RPDR this year in June lol. Season 7 was the first season I ever watched and my heart is still really fond of it

This wasn’t my first season but the first one I watched live while it was airing so it has such a special place in my heart. I’m pretty sure it was kinda the opposite though, they didn’t want another comedy/campy queen, which is why they had soooo many fashion/look queens and started out the gate with a look based mini challenge. Just my personal feeling though.

I also started to watch RPDR with season 7, and I was amazed with the runways and challenges (a musical Challenge based on John Waters movies.... I don't need something else). Now that I have watched every regular season this is not the best, but its casting is amazing, or simply these are the first group of queens that has a decent social media management.

Never understood why people said this season was bad lol. Maybe any followup of season 6 would be immediately perceived as inferior in comparison to that season (havent watched the video just commenting based on the title lsjdhsk)

Honestly after watching the untucked of this season I really was loving the trio between Katya, Kennedy and ginger. With the occasional pearl Katya ginger sprinkled in. So Katya and Kennedy lip syncing is even sadder than I first thought without context. Also loved how they had this trio but in the finale it was like pearl and violet were a duo even tho pearl and ginger were like besties. Also I think ppl just didn’t appreciate kennedys no nonsense attitude. And I guess violet in the finale was like kinda getting tolerable which was just so weird. It’s like at the end production wanted her to win and suddenly she has some almost congenial moments. I don’t personally like violets attitude, persona or whatever it is (especially in reviewing others looks which is like why is everyone and herself acting as if she has the most say and authority in this?! I mean come we’re talking about the queen that thinks gottmik deserved her win for this trash bag look). Everyone is shady but the queens that are shady but also condescending and not really fun or can’t take a joke as well, it makes you seem like an asshole. I do think however that she at times was talked over and didn’t get the chance to defend herself tho! And that annoyed me for her

im doing a big rewatch of drag race and finished season 7 a couple of weeks ago and i loved it, i left the season thinking 'why do people hate this?'

I was with you until you said the John Waters episode did not need to be a musical. Chacha Heels is one of the best songs to come out of Drag Race and I will die on that hill.

i saw Katya live in Berlin a few years ago. Halfway through the show, she mentioned that she sold merch, and that two of those would be thrown in the public by herself. Nojoke. She eyed me and I went for a leap and rapidly switched to a Katya-T in an instant. Too fat for it today, but sometime soon I will slip into a size S again. Love Katya to bits.

Also think it might be good to also add to the Challenging Challenges segment that Lucian Piane is a wildly incompetent and myopic songwriter whose skill-level reduces everything he has some degree of power over to baseline community college pantomime level. note: he even limited Jinkx's performance which was fairly decent in "Can I get an amen?" and the fact that every season's key song he wrote had to be remixed and produced to shit by a third party to be commercially viable for the shows promos. I know some people want to postulate that his music is intentionally basic to make it accessible for non-musically trained queens which might be fair, but it shouldn't be so basic that it drags everything down into a morass of utterly forgettable mediocrity, that's antithetical to everything else the production team is trying to push.

I love season 7! It was my first season I watch lived on air. I I watched all those before it just after s6 ended.

Season 13 is definitely the new season 7. It was my first season I watched all the way through live, and funny enough season 12 is probably my favorite season (mirrors your s7 and s6 fave)

I feel like Violet was already a QUEEN like yes very good in all departments but I do feel like Ginger was robbed not by Violet obv but by the production crew/writers. It just felt like Octavia Spencer came and SERVED but Elizabeth Olsen still got the award. ya know?

In response to season 13 taking place. I almost always forget about season 10 and 11

I don't wanna be the one, but I'm gonna be the one, just because I have not seen a single videoessay that talks about season 7 and includes this point in an adequate manner: I think the season 7 untucked was probably one of the only seasons (maybe along with season 4's and 10's?) where 'if you are not watching untucked you're only getting half the story'. It was almost as if the edit that they were pushing in the main show was that the fashion girls were cut-throat, ditzy and 'untalented' and that the seasoned queens were professional, old-school (very MIB in that way). Untucked was showing a very different side of things and as more and more fans were catching on with it as it was on KZread (with its peak being the top 4 episode), they were quickly switching 'sides', or at least rooting for whoever seemed like the more mature person in the situation. If anyone only watches the top 4 episode and untucked episode they are basically guaranteed to be rooting for Violet and Pearl, as Ginger came of in a very bad light, being wrong on several facts, dismissive and honestly a bit gaslight-y (not that she is like that in real life, just how she was projected in the narrative). Right before the finale the votes were in and overwhelmingly for Pearl and Violet. The finale songs and outfits (honestly, was Ginger even trying?) sealed the deal and at the end, that's how I believe everyone was rooting for the two fashion girls for the first time - an element that also ended up changing Drag Race and its view on runway looks until today.

Yea to more older seasons and more retrospectives and an untucked episode

Trixie and Katya will forever be the best thing to come out of Drag Race. Ive been watching since season 4 and 7 will forever be my go to just because of them. Theyre fucking Amazing. And make me feel proud to be straight and love them. And I’m pretty sure Katya can turn me not straight.
