After watching the prior videos, a piece of advice ... usually the fatal mistakes were made by Cap. Especially when he disregards Kortana's input or analysis ... or he just goes target wild and abandons self control. In the future, when he gets like that .... the other 2 guys ought to restrain him, lock him in the head, give command to Kortana until the situation resolves, then let him back on the deck if he behaves himself. Kortana in command of her own boat .... would be very dangerous to convoys. ...... also maybe do more defensive sweeps of the scope so you don't get jumped.

Fantastic ideas. I get the impression that there are usually real life time restraints so after a while they go kamikaze to end the video.

@@doemacmonkey So I typically only use my scope in the early stages while we can still safely be on the surface. The observation scope is larger and rises to a fixed height, making it far easier for escorts to spot than the attack scope. Once we start the attack, I have to move to the TDC and do math, so Cap's attack scope becomes our only source of visual information.

The owner of the company I used to work for brought his yacht, a 60' Hatteras, from Lake Michigan to his home in Clearwater Florida down the Mississippi river. He brought different employees along for each leg of the trip. I joined him in New Orleans and went across the Gulf of Mexico to his marina in Clearwater. We all had a contest. Using nothing but dead reckoning we had to chart our position, updated every 30 minutes We each had a laminated chart, grease pencil, stopwatch, the boat's compass and speedometer. That was it. When we arrived, we all compared our charts to the actual GPS route. I was within 900 feet of our course line the entire time. That may not sound very accurate, but it really is. I bet Kortana could have whooped all of us! She just sounds smart

You should be trying to escape as soon as you fire the torpedoes. Don't stay near the surface to admire the explosions. Unless you're performing a night attack in the middle of a convoy when they have no idea where you are you should abandon trying to reload torpedoes for a second attack. It's so frustrating watching cap treat every session like it's a suicide mission. The goal is to survive.

Yeah. Ideally they would plot each leg of the convoy zig zagging and take time getting an overall convoy direction and speed, predict a position at a fixed time and have all boats race there to ambush, but they are rushing things a bit in the name of entertainment, and let’s face it - how fun would it be for us watching if they just went deep immediately after they fired and evaded for a hour?

So, the math I am doing isn't actually required, and wasn't always done IRL. There is a "torpedo attack disc" that can be used (Somewhat similar to the E6B if you are familiar with aviation), which essentially does the math for you and gives you the necessary TDC inputs. The math I'm doing is essentially an "exploit" in the trigonometry to allow us to fire with missing information (or to calculate the information in an extremely precise manner if we have the time to take the measurements required to do so)

So this is a really interesting question. So for your right eye, they do make prescription lenses that can be inserted into most VR headsets, the Reverb G2 included. I suppose the question here is what sort of capabilities do you have with your residual vision in your left eye? If you still have some depth perception with it, then VR might be an interesting option for you. If not, then you would really just be gaining the 1:1 head-tracking function. The prescription inserts aren't nearly as expensive as a headset, so it might almost be worth it to get some and test them out if you are able to borrow a VR rig from a friend. As far as headsets themselves go, the Reverb G2 is a very good one for seated applications (I personally use one for flying in DCS).

  • @KortanaDCS

So, two reason. First, Cap really needs to have primary use of the periscope for video making purposes (and the observation scope has a larger aperture and fixed height, making it far more dangerous to use in an attack). Second, I am the team member most comfortable with the trigonometry we need to use to develop accurate firing solutions at range. While this isn't necessary to operate the TDC, it does help with creatively abusing the design of the mechanical computer to accurately fire torpedoes despite missing normally necessary information (such as speed and angle on bow)😅.

The amount of time you keep your periscope above water makes me cringe and shudder. That's asking for those destroyers to find you. The longer the scope is up the more likely it is. Keep that periscope up as little as possible. Stay at periscope depth tho; it's harder for their active sonar to see you and passive sonar to hear you, as you get lost in the clutter of the waves. Periscope up for 5 to 10 seconds to get convoy bearings. You don't need every ship, just the convoy's general course and speed. Then wait a specific period of time (5 to 15 minutes) using your stopwatch at periscope depth, then periscope back up for another quick set of readings. Then marked on paper (OH! You stay motionless for this ideally, but can do it while moving too) you can see how much their bearing has moved. And by reading your AOB from their perspective you can determine general course. Course and speed is all you need. While sitting underwater, you're relying on passive sonar. Just directional microphones, listening. You'll learn to hear the blades of the ships turning and be able to count the number and RPM of them and thus be able to determine their speed rather accurately. And even basic type of ship ala oiler, cargo, passenger, military, as they all sound quite different and have a different number of blades on their propellers. Even tell range and whether course is toward or away from you as they'll get either louder or quieter. And, knowing how many decibels any given ship's propulsion system creates, you can tell distance pretty well by measuring signal strength when it reaches you, accounting for sea conditions. And you do NOT want to take on destroyers and frigates. Even when attacking a fleet you want to go for the big ships, not the destroyers. You generally only attack them in defense. Plan and time your attacks for them to be as far away as possible; they generally have patrol patterns, particularly on the flanks. Done well you can catch a convoy with their escorts way on the other side from you, virtually giving you free reign to close quite close for more accurate shots. When you play more in the future ... Attacking at dusk with the coming night behind you is the ideal situation, as they're well-outlined by the setting sun while you're far harder to spot as there's darkness behind you. EXCEPT for glints of sun off of things like metal or glass; such as a periscope lens. So what you do is: Once you know their course, you open range from them so you're out of visual sight for them, surface the boat, and run at top speed to get ahead of them and set up an ambush. One of the best spots in a convoy of that size is right in the middle of 'em. Fire off both bow and stern shots, full spreads from every tube, and they'll turn to utter chaos and the destroyers will have a very hard time finding you. You can run directly underneath any of the convoy ships. You get there by getting ahead of them, going to depth -- ideally under the layer so their active sonar bounces away from you (if that's modeled) -- with either your bow or stern directly facing their oncoming course; smaller area for their active sonar to see. Then shut off the engines and go full-silent and just sit and wait for them to start passing over you. Then just come up to periscope depth (timed correctly of course) and fire all tubes as fast as possible. Their gyro angles should be preset, and launch as spreads, not individual. You can also get ahead of them and lurk a bit off to the side, facing their course at nearly a right angle and execute a spread attack that way. But it's easier for the destroyers to track you down that way IMO, as you're outside the chaos of the panicking merchant ships in the convoy. Passive sonar is baffling nigh impossible to read in such chaos, not to mention the explosions you ideally hear (of other ships). Hearing them creak as they sink and break apart is still scary and sad tho, knowing that could be you. Then you race ahead of them and repeat. .... By Kriegsmarine rules you would also radio the convoy in prior to making ANY attack as you speed ahead of them so a full wolfpack can assemble and overwhelm such a huge convoy. That one is TASTY!! Incidentally, that passenger liner was most likely a troop transport. But you BETTER hope it wasn't a hospital ship; those were off limits to everyone. Period. Career-ending, even accidentally.

As a longtime and solid Grim Reaper video fan, I feel qualified to say that this is the most boring and frustrating video you’ve ever released. At the 40-minute mark, I found myself seriously reconsidering my life choices - between yawns. Also, as an aside: Cortana, what are you doing working for this idiot of a Captain? You all need to get back in the air where, at least, Cap’s bad decisions are entertaining.
