This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

I'm glad the Morphy saga resumed & continues! I kept checking for more videos back in April, & after a few weeks gave up, wondering if the saga/series was done. Then recently found the Morphy saga resumed & continues! I hope will continue until Morphy's last known games. Maybe even a last game that is not very significant, , just what the last ones were. & possibly include briefly what happened in Morphy's life after his last chess game? A brief wrap up biography up to the end of Morphy's life? Did Morphy contribute anything else to chess, such as books, writings, articles, or tutoring/training? Are there any Morphy honors or organizations, like prizes? Just some suggestions or ideas for more info to include about Morphy. Agad, you have done a lot of research that shows in the extra info you have included in the videos & the text descriptions/info. Well done.

Morphy had bigger potential than any other player. He never had a coach, never had book knowledge, never had engine to practice with.. If he had all of that and trained in strict regime it would be imposible to play against him. People say Fischer was great, yes he was because of his ego, but Morphy was on a whole other level. Morphy was natural born genius.

well he did contribute a lot to modern chess so he didn't have the stuff our guys do now right

His chess is great against the opponents of his time yes, if he was up to date with all the knowledge of the modern era I still believe the Kasparovs, Karpovs and Carlsens would pose a far harder challenge.

For absolute raw talent, it is difficult to argue with Morphy and Capablanca as the top 2. Reshevsky can also to be considered but he backed away from full time devotion to chess very early on, so we never found out his full potential.

I don't know, but I do see that pawn take begins to clear the e file for the white rook. In fact white has a nasty discovery by moving the knight with check.

Morphy was truly the best of his time. He was not only a good combinator but also a great strategist as well as a great expert on endings. Fischer said of Mprphy that he is the best player of all time and I agree with him.

#suggestion for your next podcast, agad. It might be that some people have said this, but I wish the podcast could be more fun and relaxed. Just take a look at some podcasts inviting business leaders and CEOs. They might talk about chess, but their conversations are really fun ans relaxed. You might ask nakamura for things outside chess, or ask him to review some funny games/blunders. His stories with other chess players (especially Magnus). I really hope it'll work well and fun!
