Ойын-сауық

First time reaction to Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 3 "The Door of Hope" or "The Gateway of Hope". This will be a first time watching for both Adam and Andrew. We are both still kind of lost on what is going on so it will be interesting to see us find out a little bit more of the setup for this season.

I think this episode was about showing scenes in a different light. Something I think this show does very well. With a lot of other shows, flashbacks are just used to replay a scene. But in AOT, most flashbacks are replayed multiple times, but with a different context for each. For instance, we saw Ymir eat Marcel 4times or so in this series. The first time was before we knew Ymir was that titan. The second time was when Reiner and Bert realized she ate their friend. The third time was during Ymir's backstory. And now we're seeing the process of what led up to that event. Showing the same flashback but with more information and context available with each one. Similar to the situation with Grisha and the Reiss family. When Rod first tells Eren about what Grisha did, he presents Grisha as this evil, scheming man who did what he did for no reason at all. But as S3 goes on, we learn that the Reiss family actually wanted to trap humanity in their memory loss so Grisha might've done a good thing. And finally during the S3 finale, we see that Grisha didn't just come in and do what he did. He actually tried pleading with the family. Begging them to save everyone. I feel like S4 is just all of that on a grander scale. For the first 3 seasons, we've only had bits and pieces of Reiner's perspective. So it was easier to just say, "Well, I'm following the scouts. Reiner and the others are the enemy". But with Season 4, you start to see what he went through. All the mental trauma they all went through. And why they did what they did.

I don't think this is a spoiler because this episode basically confirmed it. Well anyway... Guys guys guys check that hobo's eye color and listen to his voice again. I think you missed it because of the long gap between this and 4x2. That close up shot at his face in the end was supposed to solidify our suspicions.

@@lvccxs "spoil it" It is so heavily implied that it isn't a spoiler at this point. The fact that that hobo is Eren was supposed to be the "shocker" of this episode. Just check out any other reactor for this episode.

Whether or not there are villains in attack on titan is dependent on what your definition of a villain is and what perspective you are taking. I think most people see a villain as someone who takes life needlessly and/or takes a great number of lives, while simultaneously having significant agency in said decision. Someone who is perhaps unnecessarily cruel or unjust. If that is your definition, than there are absolutely villains in AOT. Point of view also matters, obviously to Marley the warriors activities are not viewed with the same negativity as they are on Paradis. The question is, are the likes of Reiner and the other warriors examples of this? I don't think that they are as many of their most heinous actions are committed when they simply *lacked agency*. Their greatest crime against Paradis was committed as child soldiers, ignorant of who their enemies were, and with their families and their lives on the line. A desperate attack in an attempt to draw out their target. After that act was committed, there was no hope of a peaceful joining and their families and lives were still at stake, they became spies and did their best to find their ticket home. Is this villainy? I don't believe that it is. Also the whole "they are trying to make us feel for the bad guys" is a pretty lame way to look at things because it is clearly from the perspective of Paradis. What they are doing is simply filling in the backstory of characters, and if that makes them more sympathetic, then they were sympathetic all along. You simply were ignorant of their motives and history. Careful your protagonist syndrome doesn't get in the way of following and enjoying the story. These next episodes will be particularly difficult for you in that regard. To be quite honest, from your review I think you two did not understand this episode whatsoever.

Finally you guys are back! I've been waiting for this! And I would say no there are no "REAL VILLAINS" in AOT. Oh and just to let you guys know that there is a credit in episode 4.
