Just as a note, pretty much every anime opening is written for that particular show. There are definitely exceptions but the majority are made with the show in mind.

the "grab a knife" is symbolic in a lot of ways: grabbing a knife to save mikasa, putting on odm gear to save his home, starting the rumbling to save his friends

This song is one of best anime openings of all time without question. Also this captures Eren's character essence so flawlessly. Like the "I swear" screams after every line signifies that he always intended to do the right things in every step of his life, yet also raging at the same time. This OP is the GOAT! Also loved the reaction.

Ending is also a masterpiece you guys should watch that as well, it's very emotional 😭 with lyrics.. "Akuma no ko" 🔥🔥🔥 🔥

7:10 I had the exact same thought process. I thought 'grab the knife' referred to when he saved Mikasa. And they showed that scene a few seconds later in the anime opening. But here they showed the ODM sword in this version, so I thought "hmm, maybe not."

The meaning can have multiple perspectives. The image of mikasa grabbing the knife is a part of her arc but it's also part of the main theme of the show which is humanity's will to live and fight for freedom in a cruel world

This song is a Masterpiece!! The way it goes first all angry, then emotional and then angry again!! Just love it!! especially the ending when the main chorus feels like emotional like sad and then the line comes "I don't want anything I'm just here to...!!" And then it switches to anger again "Bewareeee!!!" just love it!!

I also like this OP, so I'm glad that the two of you enjoyed it. Contrary to Eren's strangely calm appearance for most of the film, this song is very intense. It's like listening to Eren's inner cry. 👣

Easily the best opening in anime for me, not for everyone. But you will have to watch the Ending and read the lyrics to it too another masterpiece included to the show!! Love you guys!😁

Just as a note regarding spoilers: I'm fairly certain that in Japan they don't really care about spoilers like western audiences do. "A spoiled plot isn't a spoiled show" is kinda how it's thought of there.

It's not because they don't care about spoilers. It's because most read the manga so spoilers won't affect them and the visuals are for hyping what people already know will happen from the manga.

By far the best opening. The official music video has a longer version which i enjoy alot and has AOT stuff so its cool to see they wrote it for the show.

most anime openings have many huge spoilers but you would never notice them or understand them until after you watched the show it shows whats going to happen and gives you reason to be hyped to watch

Guys, every song has been written specifically for the show. For example, the first ending with mikasa is an answer wich response you can find in this season ending with Eren. If you like, I can make a short list of songs from the ost tha I consider to be really helpfull with how the story was written. Hiroyuki sawano and kohta yamamoto are true legends, teacher and student, but Hiroyuki sawano has the more lyrics in his songs that are made for the show, world and characters :)

I totally lost my mind when I first heard the full version of this song. I went straight to my playlist & has resided there ever since.

I’m pretty sure the show runners for the anime asked Isayama what music they think Eren would listen to and “The Rumbling” is the result of that! Perfect song for season 4 Eren!

This opening is the only one my parents wouldn't want me to skip when we binged AOT. They liked this one that much, and my parents don't like anime or heavier music, so that's a win!

Not all opening songs were made for anime. This is one of the special times it was. Often the openings are used to promote upcoming albums and stuff. But this one was obviously made for this. They knew from the manga what would happen and had a song made to hype up what was coming.

It should be noted that when the ending of the third season (first half) was made the music video goes deep into detail that not even the manga was at yet. They defiantly go through the story when making these

I think the "never wanted to grab a knife" part is for Mikasa. Eren wanted to kill the kidnappers, he willingly took the knife and called them filthy beasts after killing them, whereas Mikasa never wanted to get involved in the violence, she did it to save Eren's life and activated her Ackerman instincts. Also I'm pretty sure that the middle finger and the index finger is shown as the colossal titan walking, the rumbling, name of the song, LoL.

It's all from Eren's perspective. Both the opening and closing songs are through his eyes and are linked. In the outro the beginning of it shows him as a kid holding a bloody knife.
