Just installed this on my 2018 Cummins. Figured I would try it as I needed to change my fluid cause it already smelled burned at 22,000 mi. 👎 immediately took a 2000 mi trip. Temps never went above 140° compared to 180° prior. Fuel mileage seemed better at 22.3mpg compared to 21.2 mpg. Average 75 mph Highway driving. Just my experience. I’m happy I made the change. My 1995 ram had a trans cooler no check valve, ran great in all temps -20 to 100° . No reason to worry about this mod in your new truck.

Great Product! Dropped my trans temps from a 168*F average unloaded on my 2017 2500 Ram 6.7L CTD down to 125-135*F average. Maybe my 68RFE will survive past 150K miles now! Thank You ATS!

@kixforrest2358 I find it confusing why a person who designed a transmission replied back to you with great to hear! You really need to check and see what temperature your trans fluid was designed to operate at, Colder is definitely not always better! Why do you think most transmission lines connect to your radiator before entering the cooler, It is to help get your transmission fluid up to operating temperatures! Transmissions have a whole lot of tiny passageways, lines, valves, bearings and more, Your fluid needs to be at the proper operating temperature to lubricate and function properly! Don’t take my advice just call which ever companies fluid you have in your transmission, Or I’m sure you can find the technical data sheet for your particular fluid! Good luck

I purchased one a few weeks ago, because it was recommended by a friend. Since my transmission was reaching upwards of 200°. Tried to install it today just to realize I dont have the thermal valve. Now I need to find out how to cool my transmission another way. I have a 2011 Ram 3500 6.7 Cummins 4x4

2012 and older, the bypass is located on the driver side of the engine block and under the fuel filter housing. You also will have the screw in transmission line and not the clip on. You just have to get a hold of ATS for the 4 screw on fittings.

Does no one have an answer on what year 68 has the TBV. I've seen 10 and up 11 and up now 12 and up and I've also seen 13 and up

Great informative video. SO my trans temp never goes over 168f when not towing. Never over 180-190f when towing. Is this really needed then?

Just ordered mine today I'm going to try it pick up my trucks got 97,000 miles and I've noticed she is running a lot harder especially when I'm carrying a load it's a 5500 dump

all in the name of emissions, and fuel economy.

Whats the purpose of the oem block why have a thermostat on the transmission? Would non thermostat blockt be better in cold climate or worse ?

Can someone answer me this. What year 6.7 cummins with 68rfe has the TBV and which years do not? I've heard multiple different years all starting in the 2010-13 range and up. I have a 12 if that helps. Never had an overheating issue on the trans besides winter time my trans normally sit and ambient temp times 2 plus 20 degrees. So if it's 70 my trans temp is 160

Im in Az so not to worried about cold temps but is there a temp that would have the trans running to cold, thus having a negative affect and this would not be recommended? I've always been told you want trans temp above 100 degrees (considered warmed up temp) before you get on it. Thanks

Marc Sundberg great question! The pump will generate enough heat to keep the temps up even just at idle. We can assure you that in AZ you will never have to worry about your temps being too low, northern parts of AK possibly :)

Wondering if I'll have issues if I'm running this when it gets to -40*c also, will the transmission fluid level always look under full on dipstick now that it will never reach "operating temp"?

I want and looked up the order for the years needed. It says 2010-2018. Wish I could post the picture of the screenshot I took. Basically, my 68rfe doesn’t have one.

Mine does fine.

Another emission part that can cost thousands in transmission repairs! I would like it if the EPA would pay for these back downs if its so important to run cooler bypass system in these transmissions.

Live in vermont. We have temperatures in the negatives in winter. My truck runs 168 to 170 loaded and unloaded. Do you recommend to still do this bypass? I tow a fifth wheel during the summer.

@jimmybuttonjr6452 I would most certainly not install a block that does not have a thermal bypass! He sounds a little shady to me, He is trying to use the scare tactic on people! Those valves usually fail because people do not service their vehicles as recommended by the manufacturer, If you’re not abusing your vehicle and you change your fluids and filters either before or when recommended you will be fine! Transmission fluid will not start to deteriorate until it gets well over 200°F, The best thing for you to do is find out what type of fluid you are using and then contact the manufacturer and see what temperature you’re particular fluid should be! Living in Vermont you need that thermal bypass valve to help keep your trans fluid within The recommended range! Also do not listen to the other comment 125 to 150 is not the recommended range for trans temp!

Can't you just eliminate the block and connect the lines?

You said in the video it's for 2011 and newer but on your website it's for 2013 and up. So will this work on 2011 and 12 or not?

That's what I'm wondering because I can't find one for my 2012, I've looked at videos and all 4 lines on mine have collars that screw into my oem thermo block.

Yea did have one in my 2011 to delete. Transmission still gets hot in hot weather or while off road. On it hot day it can heat up to 215°, and while off road had it heat up to 289° surprisingly after letting it cool it still shifted gears well

Yes your part number is part# 68rfe-tc-tbu-2, google it , its $79.00 at Rudys Diesel. Located near the fuel and water separator on the truck.

I do not think CAFE standards motivated FCA engineers to install this bypass valve. CAFE standards are more forgiving for large trucks. I believer it's origin lies in problems FCA had with the old A604 transaxle in extremely cold temperatures. Without the bypass, the fluid would get so cold as it circulated through the cooler, it impeded fluid flow significantly and damaged the transmission. I was told by FCA engineers that if you eliminate the bypass valve on a 68RFE, you run the risk of transmission damage in extremely cold ambient temperatures. If you disagree, I can reach out to my sources in Auburn Hills and ask again.

We see enough burn up trans units from valves stuck in the closed position that alone is reason enough for the switch. If someone is in severe subzero temperatures all the time, this may not be the best solution for them. Ford has a similar part as well, FCA is not the first to do this.

They make auxiliary coolers with bypasses in them, it would make sense to me to put the bypass after the radiator before the auxillary cooler...then as the engine coolant warms up it'll heat the trans fluid?

so are you saying the manufacturer made the block to fail with a valve in it weird

We see them doing a lot of goofy stuff trying to hit certain standards for things not related to reliability.

This upgrade bypass is ONLY for the 2011 and later models???

What is the reasoning behind the valve? It's more expensive than a machined piece of aluminum. There has to be a reason.
