ATS - Chassis Test Comparison (4x2 vs 6x4 vs 8x6) | American Truck Simulator

Ойындар

American Truck Simulator Chassis Comparison test between 4X2, 6X4, 8X6. Featured with the latest 1.40 update various new chassis have been added as an option for the existing trucks.
In this comparison, I will be testing chassis acceleration, turning radius, and traction on the dirt road as well asphalt on uphill road.
I want to note that Kenworth W900 doesn't have an option for the 4x2 chassis so instead, I included Kenworth T680 with the same engine 600HP and transmission Allison 4700 7 speed same tires and wheels.
Turning Radius 00:25
Acceleration 0-60MPH 01:20
Traction Test Uphill Dirt Road 03:06

About American Truck Simulator
American Truck Simulator is a truck simulator game developed and published by the Czech company SCS Software. It was announced as being in development in September 2013 and unveiled at the E3 2015. It was released on 2 February 2016 for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS. The game is the parallel sequel to Euro Truck Simulator 2, the spiritual successor of 18 Wheels of Steel, and the third installment in the Truck Simulator series. Set in a condensed depiction of the United States, the player can drive one of a choice of American-style conventional trucks, visiting various locations across the U.S., picking up a variety of cargos, and delivering them to its destination. Since its release, the game has sold over 2 million copies on Steam.

    Ok so for the uphill dirt test there are some things that SCS needs to work on. There will be a big difference between an empty trailer and a loaded trailer. It all has something to do with axle weights. An 8x6 with an empty trailer will perform worse than a 4x2 with an empty trailer because there is less weight in each axle, if one axle starts slipping on the 8x6, the rest will follow because its losing momentum. Load it up and the 8x6 can use all his axles in the right way because there's more pressure on each axle. This is one of the many reasons a lot of company's have liftable axles.

  • @herzglass

    @herzglass

    3 жыл бұрын

    But the 4x2 will experience a torque around the powered axle because of the trailer drag. The 6x4 with diff lock will have its rear axle pushed hard into the ground. Am I wrong? Also, liftable axis aren't powered.

  • @21babydew

    @21babydew

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@herzglass yes liftable axles are not powered however due to the location of the 5th wheel which can be adjusted on some trucks if neccessary the 5th wheel is typically almost perfectly in the middle of the drive axles or in the tri axle right on the middle axle / slightly forward to keep weight on the front steer axle which results in almost equal weights on both axles especially in trucks with walking beam suspension and other such heavy duty suspensions which pivot both axles equally unlike air bags in which they float independitly. so on a airbag truck which would never see this type of situation yes the rear axle could see more weight but in a heavy duty truck like a dump truck or heavy haul truck no the weight would be near equal on both drive axles.

    I also really wish they would simulate chassis twist better. The Cascadia in real life has huge amounts of torque twist in lower gears. The Kenworth's I've driven felt a bit more stable with less body roll. But the trucks are definitely too rigid in ATS and ETS. Accelerating at wide open throttle in the game you should see the cab rocking back and forth more between shifting, at least in the lower gears when you're getting the most torque.

    In ETS 2 1.4 we can see 4x2 truck jumping when tries to pull 25+ tons by flat road. Contact area is too small for this task. In this video we can see the same: 8x6 has triple contact area + 4 tons extra weight, 6x4 has double contact area + 2 tons extra weight, 4x2 has smallest contact area, length and weight.

    The empty trailer is only for better contact with surface. 650 HP / 8 tons = 81.25 HP per ton. Usual car have 100 HP / 1 ton = 100 HP per ton. A truck accelerates and decelerates slower usually.

    Tarmac hill test looks right. The only difference was truck mass vs distance. Coefficient of friction doesn’t care about the number of wheels. - Turning circle is a lot less simple. With 10 ton per rear axel the 4x2 will be the same radius all the time. The 6x4 will really try to go in a strait line and the Oshkosh tri-drive is so bad it is 8x8x4 with a rear steer axel. - As a side note a double drive with a lot of weight behind it up a steep incline will lift the front axel of the road and then it doesn’t steer at all :o)

    You should have tested 6x2 too. it has tighter cornering than 6x4, because the pushing axle is closer to the front axle.
