    Statins are the most over prescribe dangerous drug in history - period! What makes them the most dangerous is that they are routinely prescribed as a heart disease prophylactic for anyone over 60 or if your cholesterol is only slightly high. It's been proven they cause short term memory loss for some people which can be permanent. You don't even mention the debilitating fatigue they bring on for many people. While many side effects go away after stopping the treatment, for some they are permanent and even progressive. I can only conclude that you somehow benefit from promotion of this truly evil drug or you are extremely ignorant.

    Check out my Statin Skeptic video. The use of statins in people who are well, like you indicate, is controversial. I personally have tried to take all the different statins for my moderately elevated cholesterol, but couldn't tolerate due to muscle aches. I am left trying to eat right and exercise routinely, which I think you would agree, is probably a better approach anyway. But the fact is, I see patients every day who have had heart attacks and strokes. I see people whose mother or father died of a heart attack at age 40, or they have poorly controlled diabetes, or whatever. What am I supposed to do with them? I encourage them to eat a vegan diet and exercise daily, but that alone will not necessarily be enough. Doctors are left with the practical issue of dealing with actual heart attacks and strokes. Atorvastatin 80 mg per day decreases the chance of that happening by about 50%. While you consider that to be "evil" these patients consider it "life saving." In my experience with thousands of patients, most people tolerate atorvastatin without ill effect. I don't pretend to know all the possible effects of the medication, so I admit to some ignorance. I don't benefit from promoting the medication. I don't think I am promoting it either. It is very useful for some people.

    I had an aunt and a grandma who used LIPITOR. They didn't die of heart attack or stroke. Guess what! They both died of liver cancer, diabetes and some other stuff. My grandma was bedridden for 6 months on oxygen, constant pain, etc until her death. I had 270 cholesterol levels and was given Attorvastatin and guess what! Severe muscle aches, cramps, insomnia, fatigue, lack of stamina, depression. It's common sense to stop it and I did..

    I just had to stop it! I was suffering EXTREME muscle pain and tendonitis in my wrist… I am having difficulty swallowing that was escalating, getting gastrointestinal tests this week… I’m 63yr old female with high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. A heart catheterization showed amazingly clear arteries. After a year on the Atorvastatin my lipids were not better, but actually going the other way? The side effects are not tolerable for me, period. I’m also a breast cancer survivor on aromatase inhibitors which present their own special issues but are crucial in staving off a relapse. I didn’t wait for the dueling doctors’ conclusion oncologist vs. cardiologist, I stopped it at the tendonitis stage, with no doubts about my decision now as it’s out of my system and I feel exponentially better!

    I had a complete blood panel done as part of my complete physical done at the VA and the only abnormal result was an elevated cholesterol level. My primary care physician prescribed 40 mg/day of Atorvastatin and I had no noticeable side effects initially. After about 6 months I had a repeat blood panel done which then showed that I was in stage 2 renal failure. Shortly after that I started having kidney issues, with frequent and odoriferous urination. I immediately stopped the drug, adopted a better diet(bland with no salt and low protein), started drinking more water and getting more exercise. I do feel better now but my kidneys are apparently permanently damaged and I am going to have to be watchful over whatever I eat for the rest of my life. I'm angry that my doctor didn't at least try other less potentially harmful measures in dealing with my elevated cholesterol. I was not even told what my blood lipid levels were at the time the statin was prescribed and so I just went along with what my doctor said, thinking that he must know what he's doing. I don't trust any of the people at the VA healthcare anymore and I will never go back there.I just wish that I could be in a position to mess up their lives the way they've ruined mine. I was a stupid fool for believing and trusting them.

    LDL is only dangerous if it is oxidized. My doctors are so anxious to PPP (pushing pills for profit) they usually don't test LDL for oxidation. I have had high cholesterol for the last 30 years since I was 45. I had had to my LDL tested for oxidation outside my local medical clinic without my doctor's prescription. I was a biostatistician for several major drug companies so I would never take any prescription without a lot of research on my own. As it is I am 75 and don't take any prescription drugs. My doctor is amazed at how healthy I am at my age but she does not connect the dots. The AMA is now "ppp" a ka pushing pills for profit.

    I had a stroke a few months back and was prescribed this at 40 Mg. I’m in my early 40s. Started having headaches shortly after stroke and I think it might be caused by the statin.. I’ve stopped taking almost a week now but still have headaches. My cholesterol and all blood work is much better now 3 months later...I’ve changed my diet quite a bit. I’ve heard red rice yeast is really good substitute for statin

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi J L. I haven’t had any patients get headache from atorvastatin (that I know of anyway). If it were giving you a headache I would expect the headache to go away when you stopped it. I have patients get headache with some blood pressure medications, which sometimes are started around the time of stroke, for example amlodipine or hydrochlorothiazide. Red yeast rice supplementation is like taking about 1 to 2 mg of lovastatin. It is generally an inadequate substitute for atorvastatin for someone who has had a stroke, In my opinion. Eating a whole food plant-based diet would be a means of decreasing your risk substantially. I don’t consider it an alternative to statins, but an additional intervention to decrease risk. You can check out my video plants versus statins here: m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/kW2t3KODZJuzns4.html Best wishes

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Scott, that is a normal thing for the doc to do. It is important to understand what they think caused your TIA. There are quite a few possibilities. Most patients I see with TIA get atorvastatin 80 mg, at least for starters while the neurologist or internal medicine team looks into what caused the problem. While it is true that many people have side effects with the med, most people take atorvastatin without a problem. Taking atorvastatin for primary prevention, when there is no problem, is more controversial than your case, where you are taking it for secondary prevention, meaning you had a problem and you are trying to prevent another one. You can usually help yourself a lot by eating healthy dietary pattern, which in my opinion means eating a lot of whole food plant based stuff. Best wishes

    I kept wondering why I started getting muscle aches after 2 months of being on lipitor. My Dr prescribed this without even checking my cholesterol. She did this bc I had been having leg pain for a long time and then my leg started to have a mottled appearance. I hurt my back 2 yrs ago and was diagnosed with herniated disc which in my case caused leg pain. Ever since starting lipitor, I've had muscle aches in my knees, ankles, and wrists and fingers. Also extreme fatigue and insomnia. I won't take it anymore!

    xxx xxx hi, good question, there is no direct head to head study of atorvastatin vs rosuvastatin that I know of. Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are similar in effect. Rosuvastatin better proven in primary prevention, atorvastatin better proven in secondary prevention.

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    Hi, there are no direct comparison studies of atorvastatin vs rosuvastatin that I know of. Atorvastatin is better proven for people who have already had a blockage, and rosuvastatin is better proven for people who do not yet have a history of blockage. Bottom line is nobody can tell you that one is proven to be better than the other. I consider the medications interchangeable, basically. I usually start with atorvastatin for a given patient, because it has been around longer and is sometimes cheaper for the patient. If person has muscle aches, I switch to rosuvastatin. 40 mg of rosuvastatin = 80 mg of atorvastatin.

    I was also prescribed 40mg of this statin. I took it for one year and lost about 7 kg. I start to realise that this weight lost is due to the lost of muscle mass after taking statin. Statin will not only harm your body organ. It degenerate your body tissue especially your muscles. Once.your body start to lost muscle mass. You will be very prone to many other diseases. I stop taking statin and change my lifestyle. More vagetable and workout 💪 everyday if possible. After one year. My muscle start to come.back slowly. 11.11.2020

    I've been on Atorvastatin for 4 months, taking 20 mgs. once a day, and have had no side effects at all. I was on Predinisone, and I took myself off it, despite my doctor and pharmacy trying to force me to take it, because that had bad side effects. Insomnia, rapid mood swings, mania, depression, and muscle spasms, which is why my doctor then prescribed me cyclobenzaprine that is a good skeletal muscle relaxant, but it caused horrible dry mouth and throat, and moderate sedation, which the 30 mgs. of cyclobenzaprine a day would render me languid and sedated. The Prednisone was prescribed to me for a torn interior wall pectoral muscle, because my doctor said it would heal it faster, which I found no information verifying that to be true, it's a horrible cortical steroid that made my body stop making cortisol while I was on it, and compromised my immune system. The only 2 drugs I ever been prescribed to have little to no side effects were hydrocodone for pain, and atorvastatin still has no side effects on me whatsoever. I make sure everything I eat has little to no cholesterol, and I eat garlic a lot which is a natural way to lower bad LDL cholesterol. My doctor only told me a little, the internet and videos such as your video on KZread told me me a lot more. Also, milk thistle is good to take a few times a month, and the common weed purslane that grows everywhere has vitamins A,C,E, every B vitamin except for B12, and omega 3 fatty acid.

    Hello. Now that a year has passed, do you still have no side effects from Atorvastatin? I have been on Atorvastatin about the same time as you since my doctor switched me from simvastatin, which I was on for over a decade (complete with muscle cramps and aches when first started) and, like you, I had no problems for many months when I started on atorvastatin. Now, for the last five months, I have noticed my muscle build depleting along with an often severe lack of energy and strength. I have been a Type 2 Diabetic since May 2003.

Definitely talk to your doc before trying that. Also, if my patient were having nausea with the med I would check a chemistry blood test that includes liver and kidney values. Hope that helps.

    Very informative video Dr., thank you ! Seems the older I get, the more controversial subjects there are. Last week it was no one agreeing anymore on exactly when to change the oil in their car, now a drug issue some are also blaming the government for.....For what its worth; I'm 75, smoked for 57 years before seeing a cardiologist who scared the living poo out of me. Saint of a man, very concerned about my quitting because my arteries are a mess of restrictions.( he has pictures) He said I could have a stint put in the worst one, but its not absolutely necessary. I thank God every morning I'm alive. I was taking Lipitor for cholesterol before I saw him, and now that it's Atorvastatin, it's at 40MG. After quitting smoking, thanks to my Cardiologist and Alan Carr, I became a gym rat. And thanks to silver sneakers free memberships, I belong to 3 local Gyms, 2 of which have saunas btw. Eating better remains a challenge. Only side effect is muscle pain, that is manageable due, I believe, to the stretching My family Dr. prescribed via a Rehab Center, my routine activity, and exercise. Cardio and Weights are much more meaningful to me now than ever before...... Interesting about stress being blamed on this drug. I can't say I have any more of it because I believe that increases with age and circumstances. But it remains manageable, thank God, because of His gift of Faith :) I'm not sure I could survive without that after Honey do and I have been elected to the ''Renaissance of multi generational supporters'' ( were raising our second litter, and the teen thinks were both 3 years old........)

Had any of the side effects? Not really. Yes I sometimes can't find my keys, sometimes can't remember what I went back into the house for. But knowing you can't remember means it's not dementia. I an getting old. Muscle ache, they come and go, not necessarily due to statin. No sign of diabetes, have yearly diabetic foot scan and retina photoscophy. Still alive, not sure if its due to medication or healthy diet and exercising. I have stable angina and refuse to take an angioscophy, because I don't want to compromise my kidneys, and also I don't want a stent.

    Yes absolutely we give it to people with diabetes all the time, because it decreases chance of stroke and heart attack so much. The Statins only increase the sugar a small amount. For example, the hemoglobin A1c (measure of long term sugar average) might go from 7.3 up to 7.4 due to the statin. It only increases the sugar a tiny bit, but decreases the chance of stroke and heart attack a lot. Please see my videos Atorvastatin 1 and Atorvastatin 2 for more explanation. I hope this helps you understand better, if not, please let me know.

    You people need to know what I went through with a Quack VA doctor. I was overdosed with 80 mg of Atorvastatin and in a few months had full-blown Statin Induced Myopathy. I was on 40 mg for years but with acceptable levels of cholesterol. Why she thought it was necessary to double the dose, I have suspicions. In three months, Both legs and left hand crippled. Took 5 months of patience and care from the wife to overcome. No real treatment or cure, just takes time to go through your system. About 85-90% recovered now. Horrible experience to go through. Partly my fault for not studying the negative effects of the drug, mostly the doctor for not knowing what the hell this stuff can do when wrongly prescribed. I was a healthy retired veteran, I think she was trying to get rid of me to save the FedGov money.

    It is sad to hear you story. Hopefully you will continue make progress. The doc was likely following the guidelines made for doctors which direct us to mostly use 80 mg of atorvastatin. So she was following the cookbook put out by the cardiology trade organizations. But there has never been a direct trial of atorvastatin 40 mg vs Atorvastatin 80 mg. So no one could tell you for a fact that 80 is better than 40. You are so right to point out that more statin is not necessarily better and in your case was harmful. Best wishes for you and thanks for pointing out that statin side effects can occur when the dose is increased.

    Thank you for the reply. I’m trying various natural remedies for cholesterol but am skeptical about them. Since I cannot/ will not try statins again, I’m attacking it from a different approach, keep the veins,arteries cleared of plaque. Ultra sound shows only a tiny trace of plaque. My total cholesterol is 350 now from 200 months ago when I stopped Statin. And of course, weight loss is important. Just so you know, my total lipid was 190 with 100 LDL when told to increase dose to 80 mg from 40. I cannot figure out her logic to increase dose when I should have been off it . I found out many Pharmacists will not release 80 mg prescriptions without a call to doctor for a verbal confirmation of dose. FDA also warns of dangers of 80 mg dose, Feb, 2010 and discourages it.

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you had a great response to the 40 mg dose. It was simvastatin that got the warning on the 80 mg dose back in 2010, but atorvastatin didn’t get a warning on muscle damage for the 80 mg dose. She increased it because textbook says to go down to 70 on the LDL, they rewrote the book in November 2018. Docs are highly encouraged to go to the 80 mg dose of atorvastatin in many many patients. I get pressure from other docs to increase my pts to 80 mg when they are on 40 mg. Sometimes it’s warranted, other times not, in my opinion. It’s great that you only had minimal plaque on your ultrasound. However since your cholesterol is way up there you may want to consider ezetimibe, which is a non statin cholesterol lowering med. there are others but they don’t work very well at. I am starting a study on Brazil Nuts, which were shown in a small study to decrease cholesterol a lot. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3693158/ Thanks for your comments Tomas

    Rarely atorvastatin can cause blurry vision. My medical text lists it as happening in less than 2 percent of people. I have never had a patient who told me they had blurry vision from it. Atorvastatin can raise blood sugar some and this could blur the vision. Otherwise, I don’t know how it affect vision. The only way to know for sure the med is causing the side effect is to stop it and see if the symptom goes away.

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dieter! Yes, as you point out, there are two types of people when dealing with health. People who can do healthy things, and people who cannot. The Framingham Study was a population study, where the scientists observed average associations of cholesterol and other parameters with outcomes. They saw that having a high HDL was associated with lower chance of heart disease. They saw that high LDL was associated with higher chance of heart disease. They saw that triglycerides were not strongly associated with heart disease. However, I have numerous patients with high HDL who actually have heart disease, and many with low LDL with heart disease. We cannot use the cholesterol numbers to accurately predict who will have a problem! An exception to this is people with a very high LDL cholesterol, for example 4.8 mmol/L. these people will have a 50% chance of having heart disease. The "high LDL" cutoff used in the substudy I think you are talking about was 100 mg/dl (2.5 mmol/L). This is actually quite low, and de-emphasizes the effect of high LDL. For example, if they used a high LDL cutoff of 4 mmol/L, then the high LDL would be a stronger predictor of risk than low HDL. Another factor is that high HDL may be associated with good outcome, but not actually the cause of good outcome. For example, exercise increases the HDL some. Exercise is good for your heart health. The higher HDL could be a marker for people who exercise, rather than actually being protective. Interestingly, medications that have been tested for increasing the HDL and trying to decrease risk have failed. the AIM HIGH study looked at this idea with Niacin: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1107579 Also, one alcoholic beverage per day increases HDL a little, and decreases LDL. The alcohol is associated with lower chance of heart attack and death. But no one know if this is because of the effect on the cholesterol levels, or if it is something else entirely. When dealing with risk for heart disease, I focus on trying to identify high risk people who can benefit from statin (decreases chance of stroke and heart attack by 1/2), and importantly benefit from eating a no sugar diet, (I prefer plant based moreso than a keto approach, however I can't prove that plant based is better than keto), and lastly motivate people to be physically active with daily exercise. An example of someone at high risk would be someone with HDL of 30 mg/dl (0.77 mmol/L) and an LDL of 160 (4.1 mmoll/L). Another example would be a 50 year old with a calcium score of 400 Agatston units (see my video kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZH2MvKSMe7y8g9o.html). Another example would be someone with a brother and sister who both died of heart attacks in their 40's. So for high risk people I like to recommend statin (which although it decreases HDL, it decreases risk a lot), eat right, exercise. Some of my patients don't want statin, and that is ok with me, as long as they are very adherent to a whole food plant based diet, and they exercise daily. Remember that the various cholesterol levels are INACCURATE for predicting risk. For people who are not high risk, statin can typically be avoided, and person needs to eat right and exercise, like you indicate. If a person does these things, many health benefits will result. Your goal is not to change your LDL and HDL numbers, but rather eat right and be very active. I kind of rambled there, but I hope this info is of some use to you. Bottom line: even though statin can decrease HDL, statins are proven to decrease chance of stroke and heart attack, especially in people at high risk for this occurring.

    You're welcome Dieter. The first step is understanding your risk. My website has a risk calculator, that is what we use here in USA. www.cardiogauge.com/summary2/ You put in your numbers and it will tell you the percent risk. If the percent risk is more than 20% that is considered high. If a person already has a history of heart attack, stent or stroke, that person is at high risk. Calcium score more than 300 is high risk. Strong family history of heart disease is high risk. High risk people are the people most likely to benefit from statin. So you have to understand your risk to understand how much you need to take the medication. If you take a medicine that has side effects, it is important for you to understand the chance that the medication could help you. Just measuring cholesterol levels does not quantify that.

    Sorry I missed your comment from a couple weeks ago. For my patients with stroke, as long as it wasn't a stroke caused by bleeding into the brain, I recommend atorvastatin. It decreases the chance of having another stroke by about 50%, at the dose of 80 mg per day. The chance of having a liver problem from a statin is low. 1 in 100 people get mild increase in their liver test (AST or ALT). 1 in a million actually have liver failure. So concern about the liver is generally not a good reason to avoid a statin. I have patients who have had Hepatitis C and coronary artery disease, and I use statins in those patients to try to prevent further heart attack. I have patients who are alcoholics and have liver problems, and also have had heart disease. I use statins for them as well, although at lower doses.

    I'm 57 & have been on Lipitor now atorvastatin for 25 years, I've experienced muscle cramps in my shoulders & back mostly when I lift weights or heavy lifting but recently I get a pain in the middle of my back underneath my shoulder blades or close to, being concerned this might be something more than side effects have prompted my research, the dull ache comes on after working some what hard in the yard or when I'm not getting enough rest it can go away with a good nights rest but can come back after I resume heavier activities. It seems that laying down after a event then getting up to a vertical position can bring this on sometimes to the point that that I bend over to try to relieve the pressure I have no other heart attack symptoms. I have a doctor appointment in a couple of months but now wondering if I should move up the date. Is there a distinction between the muscle side effects of this statin and of having a heart issue.

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes there is a distinction between the muscle side effects of a statin and having a heart issue. Statins don't harm the heart muscle, but rather can harm the other muscles of the body, for example arms, shoulders, legs, buttocks, back, etc. It is rare for the statins to cause actual muscle damage (1 in 25,000 people). Rather they commonly cause pain, which goes away when the medication is stopped. Usually, when people are having muscle pain from statins, they feel it more when they are at rest, not doing anything. Also, the pain usually does not change with changes in position. It seems likely that your symptom is not caused by the Lipitor, but something else. I can't give you advice on what to do (all that legal stuff). But, if I had a patient who was experiencing what you are, I would want him or her to report it to me promptly, because back pain with activity can be an indicator of a heart problem, or other important problem. It could just be a pulled muscle, but it could also be something more important.

    Wrong again doc. Statins can harm the heart muscle because it causes a drop in CoQ10 levels in proportion to the drop in cholesterol and the heart is one the biggest users of CoQ10. You can try to supplement with CoQ10 but there is some doubt that it does any good. Let me be unequivocal about this, Long term use of statins can cause a heart attack. Other little mentioned but common side effects include neuropathy, diabetes, memory loss, colitis, dry eyes, fatigue-the list goes on an on - and all of these can be permanent and even progressive after stopping statins.

  • @CardioGauge

    @CardioGauge

    6 жыл бұрын

    When you say "let me be unequivocal" you discredit yourself. According scientific research, statins decrease the chance of heart attack, especially in people who have already had a heart attack. Check out the GREACE study, and the HOPE-3 study. Medical science is like any other science. There are observations and experiments and knowledge gained. I believe most medical studies are not fake, because the results usually support what I obesrve. I acknowledge statins can cause many different side effects. BUT THEY USUALLY DON'T. I don't take a statin, but if i had a heart attack or Stroke I would! A big reason why Statins have a lot of haters: when statins work, nothing happens. They dont make you feel better. A person takes it for years and years, and there is no stroke or heart attack. After taking the medication for a long time with nothing happening the person may think "I took this medicine for all these years, and it never did anything for me." However, if someone gets a side effect, he or she may immediately think "this medication is poison, it is terrible." So no successfully treated people post or talk about how great Statins are, because nothing happened, and people who get side effects are (rightfully) pissed off and very vocal. My reply is too long but i also have to relate an anecdote. I know a woman whose husband had first heart attack at age 29 and died at age 40. The woman has three sons, all of whom have very high cholesterol. They have been receiving Statin since childhood to prevent PREMATURE DEATH. For this MOTHER, the medication is seen as LIFE SAVING for her THREE SONS. It is not right for everyone, but it is a critical tool for improving the health for many people.

I'VE NEVER DRANK ALCOHOL I HAVE AROUND 17YRS AGO HAD VERY RARELY A GLASS OF WHITE WINE IN A PINT GLASS TOPPED TO THE BRIM WITH TONIC WATER SO A WINE SPRITZER BUT ONLY ON A SCHOOL STAFF NIGHT OUT I WASNT A LOVER OF DRINK SO I DIDNT NEED TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE DINK IN AN EVENING BACK THEN. NOTHING SINCE MY DAIRY INTAKE IS I WOULD SAY VERY VERY LOW, CHEESE ONLY IF ADDED TO A MOUSSAKA, OR MEALS WHICH HAD IT IN. MY DIET IS VERY BLAND, BORING & ISNT EVEN SEADONED APART FROM BEETS & TOMATOES TO BRING OUT THE FLAVOURS. ADMITTEDLY WHEN I HAD THESE ALWAYS FRESH I DID HAVE A DOLLOP OF MAYO WITH THEM. BUT THAT WAS MANY YRS AGO NOW IF AND WHEN I DO HAVE (V RARELY) I NOW HAVE WITH GREEK YOGURT AS I STARTED TO TASTE EGG THROUGH THE MAYO! AS SAID IT IS A VERY FUSSY FINIKY FOOD CHOICES MY FAVOURITE ALWAYS PLATES OF STEAMED VEG BUT NOT FOR THE PAST 3YRS ODD AS CARERS DO NOT DO IT HOW I LIKE IT. AND I CANNOT DO IT MYSELF. SO MY VEG IS EITHER STEAMED, ROASTED IN SMALL EXTRA V OLIVE OIL WITH FRENCH BREAD AND GOATS CHEESE MIXED WITH GREEK YOGURT BUT THIS IS A LUXURY VEG DISH TWICE A YEAR. AS STATED IM HAPPY WITH A PLATE OF EVERY TYPE OF VEGETABLE GOING ALWAYS HAVE BEEN AS WERE MY CHILDREN. BUT I ALWAYS WOULD HAVE SAY A DESSERTSPOON OF BUTTER ON MY PLATEFUL OF VEG.& I CAN EAT THIS EVERYDAY . BUT I DO NOT AS WOTH EVERYTHING THINGS ARE HARDER AND ITS QUICKER FOR A CARER TO DO BEANS, SPAGHETTI, TIN TOMATOES ON TOAST OR A JKT POTATO SWEET OR WHITE WITH THE POTATO THE ONLY TOPPING IS BUTTER BUT IT IS NOT SWIMMING IN A SOUP OF BUTTER ON THE PLATE THE POTATOE HAS ABSORBED IT. I MAY HAVE THIS ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK EVERY 3WKS. I KNOW THIS ALL SOUNDS RIDICULOUS BUT IT IS THE WHOLE TRUTH MY DIET DOES NOT DEVIATE WHICH IS WHY IT IS SO EASY TO RECALL. I HAVE 1 CUP OF T A DAY WITH 2 SUGARS NO COFFEE AND THE REST IS SUGAR FREE FLAVOURED WATER ABOUT A LITRE AND MAYBE HALF A DAY. MY FATHER HAD TRIPLE HEART BYPASS 24YRS AGO DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIS HEALTH AS HE NEVER MAINTAINED CONTACT HE JUST KEPT CONTACT WITH MY BROTHER HE WAS AN ALCOHLIC, AND SMOKER. BTW I WAS A SMOKER GAVE UP 3YRS BACK. AFTER I HAD STARTED AGAIN! PRIOR TO ME STARTING AGAIN I HAD GIVEN UP FOR 10YRS. SO NO SMOKING PAST 3YRS. IM ASKING FOR HELP WITH ANYTHING & EVERYTHING I DONT KNOW WHAT TO EAT I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. I HAVE BEEN GETTING MUSCLE PAIN TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO MY SPASTICITY IYS EASY TO TELL THEM APART. WITH THE POST YHROMBOTIC SYNDROME MY CIRCULATION CAUSES PARASTHESIAS OF DIFFERENT SORTS SO NOT SURE IF I WOULD NOTICE THERE. BUT I KNOW IN AMERICA YOU ALL ARE GIVEN YOUR MEDICAL DETAILS AND PAPERS AND UNDERSTAND THINGS BETTER. IN U.K. AS YOU CAN TELL MY G.P DID NOT EVEN TELL ME OF MY CHOLESTEROL LEVELS GOING BACK TO 2015 TO CURRENT DATE WHEN A CARDIOVASCULAR DR RECOMMENDED TO MY G.P ABOUT THE STATINS. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP WITH DIETRY OR ANY ADVICE AT ALL. I HAVE ALREADY STOPPED THE BUTTER IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR AND USE BENECOL SPREAD. PLEASE ANY ADVICE WELCOMED.

    I had a heart attack 2 yrs ago & was put on statins. No prior health issues like diabetes, weight, high blood pressure or irregular heart beat. Statins almost crippled me. I can not nor will I take statins again. I took myself off them & eat antii inflammatory diet. No man made food. No sweeteners, no bread. No oils unless a avocado or olive. I eat meat/fish, plain Greek yogurt, berries, organic cheese, butter, lots of veggies & salads. Tested & I am in normal range for cholesterol. The big jump was HDL went from 38 to 74. That’s the good cholesterol. I feel like I was given my life back. Quality of life was gone on statins. The killers are sugar, bad oils, all preserved food & bad carbohydrates. Wish you well in obtaining better health.

    Is it useful in men and women over 75?

    Yes it is, especially in people who have had a blood vessel problem already, like stroke or heart attack. It decreases the chance of having further heart attack or stroke. It is less understood if it is worth it to take the medicine if the person has not yet had any blood vessel problems. Some doctors will use it in this situation, some will not.

    It sounds like the typical muscle pain from atorvastatin. When my patients have symptoms like this, I will do one of three things: stop the medicine for three weeks and see if the aching goes away; or decrease the medicine to 20 mg and see if the aching goes away; or switch the medicine to rosuvastatin, another statin that is less likely to cause muscle aches. Best wishes

    You should tell your doc about your symptoms, and he or she can check you out. I haven't had any patients with dizziness from the medication, that I can recall. Again, the aching and pains all sound like typical statin side effects.

    Thanks for your comment. I have seen atorvastatin keep people alive that would have died over the 20 years I have been a doctor. It is a great medication for people who have had heart attack or other blood vessel problem. It decreases chance of another heart attack by half. It is of debatable use in people who are healthy. I see people in my office who have had their brother / sister / father / mother / aunts / uncles die of heart attacks at young ages. These people ask me to help them avoid dying of a heart attack. I tell them to eat as healthy as possible, which would be Mediterranean Diet, a LactoVegan Diet, or Vegan Diet, Exercise routinely, Don't Smoke, Get enough sleep, and often, to take atorvastatin. For people who already have blood vessel disease, or for people who have close family members who have suffered heart attack or stroke, taking atorvastatin is usually really a good idea. I believe in science (published studies) and personal experience. Whether or not the studies are true or all lies, I have no proof. However, no one can convince me the medication "does not work" because I have personally observed it to help many many people. That is why I support its use. I acknowledge it is far from being perfect or right for everyone. I don't "sell it."

    Thanks for your comment. But, where should people who have had heart attacks RUN TO? Some herbs? An apple a day? No... They should: Eat right (Vegan, Vegetarian, or Mediterranean). Exercise daily for 45 minutes. And take aspirin and atorvastatin. Heart Attacks are not a pretend agenda item, they are the #1 killer in USA.

    I totally agree with eating right like you say, but don't know if fasting prevents heart attacks, if you have a reference for me to read, I will read it. I have patients who have had heart attack, then they do a great job with diet and exercise, don't take statin, and still have another heart attack. So that is why I give my heart attack patients aspirin and atorvastatin, regardless of how well they eat. Basically, doing a good job with diet after decades of eating crap does not reverse all the damage and the medications can still be helpful, in my opinion and experience...

    Thanks for your comment. It is such an important fact that docs don't tell patients. I agree you are right, most people do not benefit (most being defined as more than 50% of people who take it). I hope that idea comes across in the atorvastatin 2 video. However, this does not mean that it shouldn't be used, here is my explanation: For people who have had a heart attack or stroke, atorvastatin 80 mg per day decreases chance of another stroke or heart attack by half. Their chance is around 50% of this happening again in the 10 years after the heart attack without the medicine. With the medicine that person's chance is now 25% of stroke or heart attack over the next 10 years for a difference of 25%. In other words, each person has a 25% chance of having a benefit over 10 years. Another way of looking at it is to say that 1 in 4 people who take atorvastatin for 10 years will benefit. It "will work" in 1 in 4 people. So, like you say, it won't work in 3 in 4 people. The thing is, would you rather have a 50% chance of stroke or heart attack over 10 years, or a 25% chance? I would rather have a 25% chance. If I had a stroke or heart attack, I would take the medicine. I haven't had that, so I don't take it. Where your comment really hits home is with people who have not had stroke or heart attack who have say an 8% chance of heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years. Docs guidelines say to give this person the medication, but there is only a 1 in 25 chance that the person will have benefit. 4% chance of benefit, 96% chance of not having benefit!! I agree it is hard to take a pill every day for 10 years, when there is a 1 in 25 chance of it accomplishing the goal it is supposed to accomplish!!! For my patients who have had stoke and heart attack, or have a high chance of this happening (very bad family history, extremely high LDL cholesterol > 190 for example), I recommend the med. equally important to med is eating healthy (my mainstay recommendations are Mediterranean Diet or LactoVegan Diet) and routine exercise. Please see my "statin skeptic" video. My goal is to give a balanced, rational viewpoint with these videos.

    Thanks for your comment. I think a lot of people think the same thing you do when they watch my videos. However, I don't work for the drug companies, in fact, I think a lot of drug companies are totally corrupt entities. For example, many are colluding and causing the price of previously dirt cheap generic medications to be much higher, ie atenolol, diltiazem. Pfizer tries to trick people to get expensive Viagra for 40$ a pill, when a generic version at 2$ exists. And on and on. There are companies charging 15,000$ per year for a cholesterol medication. I don't take lunches, education, trips, money, cookies or anything at all from drug companies. Rarely, I will give a sample medication to someone who can't afford it, like Xarelto or Eliquis. That comes from the drug company. I use it to try to help my patients. Atorvastatin is generic and is made by multiple companies (I don't know how many). Atorvastatin is 4$ per month where I live. People spend more on chewing gum than atorvastatin. There is no money to be made plugging atorvastatin. The numbers I quote are not false. Drug companies funded the studies, so there is reason for skepticism, absolutely. But in my 20 yrs working with patients, I observe those who take the medication to do better. My father is a family doctor in Maine, and he has 40 years of experience working with thousands of Mainers. He will tell you unequivocally that atorvastatin has decreased the number of heart attacks and strokes, and that many of his patients live longer as a result. Please see my "statin skeptic" video, where I talk about reasons to be skeptical about statins.
