I can't believe how much Thom has grown over the years... If you watch the documentary Radiohead made about life on tour in 1998 called Meeting People Is Hard, you can see how much Radiohead, (Thom especially), were completely drained from being in the spotlight and how absolutely miserable he was. This video as well as the other stuff from King of limbs shows Thom completely free to express himself artistically without the fear of rejection or disapproval. I don't know what happened in Thom's life between these two periods of time but whatever it was caused him to be much more at peace with himself and his life ... What a lucky guy.

You are right, I saw him singing with Michael Stipe in a show for Tibet, he was about 30 and looked like a frightened teen... Until he killed the song in the climax ending... Went back to a misery right after he finished singing. It's good for music that he found a way to make peace with life and himself:-)

Fukiko Takase's dancing is just extraordinary. Her movements are stunning, full of seeming perfection in expression, so well defined and choreographed for the song.

It is so odd, everyone has such amazing things to say about the dancing, Usually I love to see Thom dance, he is mesmerizing and I watch Lotus Flower at least once a day, and lose myself in live concerts like Bonnaroo 2006, watching his unashamedly crazy dancing. But this one just completely freaks me out. It is the girl, her movements unsettle me. They are so completely alien and weird. I don't feel the expression, just distinctly uncomfortable and triggered. I have to move to the next song whenever it comes on. So strange, I don't know why I find it so uncomfortable. Am I the only person who does not appreciate her art?

  • @jahazbrooga309

@@JudySam1988 Thom knew her skills and employed Fukiko to be the mirror to his moves. She was asked to diversify at each sequence so he could mirror hers and do likewise. Try to see it as as a live dance expression of ongoing research in a design project or when someone is looking for creative insipration in music by listening to other artists. A bit like a focus group bouncing ideas off each other. Try not to focus on Fukiko, but in the way they interact. I believe they are meant to be the same person, one is a projection of the other. Think of when you dance in a club and get lost in it. You think you are looking like this, but how do other people see you? This is what I interpret from this video and I hope it helps you to engage with it a little more.

This song occupies a very specific corner of my heart. It perfectly encapsulates a very specific time in my life, a very sad memory. The lyrics about people (particularly an Ingenue -- a young and naive woman) getting you into messes and leaving you there, fools rushing into situations, and all the while knowing the danger but being pulled by forces too big for them, being part of someone's collection.. It really really resonates with me. This song is so beautiful but is also sometimes hard to listen to. But there is something cathartic in the tears that come. It all happened near the end of grad school for me. I achieved what I set out to, but it cost so much.

This is one of those songs that give such a unique feeling that only this song manages to convey that I absolutely adore. the bass is insane, makes sense Flea is responsible for it. it gives me such a good tingle whenever i listen to it. the octave jumps are the most standout portions of it. the percussion is incredibly groovy, and moves excellently with the feeling throughout. the water dripping in the back adds to this groove and makes it even more ethereal. Thom's voice as well. Oh my god. Without it this song would be just a really good, idm-esque song. His vocal performance with the lines he delivers are hauntingly beautiful. In contrast to the harsher tones of the bass and drum kit, it really ties a beautiful bow on top of this amazing piece of work. on one hand, this song is so uniquely incredible that it feels like it deserves to be This Song Only, Ingenue. but on the other hand, I would die for more music exactly like this

The way they move in this video is so cool. It's uninhibited movement, and yes, it does look strange but I feel that's part of the appeal. The female dancer really flows across the screen and it's mesmerizing. It came across to me at first as uncoordinated and awkward but even then there was something about it that captivated me, and the more I come back to this video the more I'm able to appreciate that something.

This song hits home I've always had but for a long time I wasn't aware of it and God I am so grateful for this track. It's like the sounds I've heard in mind in my early childhood and finally someone had enough empathy to show them in a song. It seem to me like I would know it since my previous life, even tho didn't even knew what Radiohead was two years ago.

I was extremely impressed with the song and the video but I couldn't get what it was about. I tried to examine it, and here is what I've got. According to my analysis, I may assume that this song depicts the endless process of recreation of the Universe. The word “Ingenue” is translated from Latin as “genuine”. That’s why I think it has nothing to do with a girl or any romantic relationships. As a matter of fact, it might be even a game of syllables “In-ge-nue” - “Ge-nu-ine”. Thus, the author may refer to God, Nature or the Universe. It seems that the lines “You know like the back of your hand your bell jar, your collection” are appealing to the fact that people are like seeds of the dandelion kept in a God’s jar as a collection. Whilst the lines “The seeds of the dandelion you blow away” accentuate that “God” is constantly playing with his creatures. He blows away the seeds, lets them grow into flowers and picks their seeds up into his jar all over again. These lines represent the endless circle of life and death, a constant reproduction. The lines “You got me into this mess, so you get me out” and “Fools rushing in” emphasize the author’s irritation towards the whole process. While other “seeds” want to get into God’s collection, the author wants to get out. He wants to break free from this infinite life circle. The last lines “Gone with a touch of your hand. Move through the moment though it betrays. Transformations. Jackals and flames” may be depicting the process of dying, when a body overcomes certain metamorphoses and where the concept of time and space is being distorted. It may seem rather ironical that in the last moment the narrator feels unready to die and asks God to give him some more time: “Just give me more time. I hope and pray. I mistake all you say”. While dying the author is figuratively divided into two states - “before death” and “after life”. That might be the reason why he uses such an irrational expression “If I knew now what I knew then”. If you watch the clip more carefully, you may notice that this process is being visualized quite prominently. It shows not only a life circle but also the duality of the world represented by the union of opposites - a man and a woman, metaphorical Yin-Yang. Nevertheless, the end of the clip shows that everything comes to its starting point and the process will be inevitably repeated.
