Atomos Ninja V+ in RAW HDR (what took me so long?)
Ғылым және технология
My first attempt at uploading in HDR. Recording 12bit RAW from the Sony A7Siii on my Atomos Ninja V+ has given me the kick I needed to learn something new. I can only apologise for the time it took to realise what the story is!
There's two deliberate mistakes in this video... if you spot them, well done!
(Please Note: From tests, it looks like KZread can sometimes take 2 days to upload the HDR version)

I have the Ninja V and it is a pretty amazing recording monitor. But, there was a learning curve, the settings are not user-friendly at all and you don’t realize all the accessories you need to buy just in order to use this equipment, because the accessories doesn’t come with the Ninja V. It was extremely frustrating and annoying to get over all the obstacles and the surprises, but if you can get past all that it is a pretty amazing piece of equipment to add to your workflow. I’m sure this ninja plus is a decent upgrade, but I can’t imagine all the headaches that would come along with this piece of equipment that no one would probably realize if they bought that without doing their research first
Thanks for the video. I have a few thoughts after two years spent working with my regular Ninja V. 1000 nits is a bright screen, but not really bright enough in bright sunlight. As someone who shoots a great deal of on location, nature time-lapse, I would like to see Atomos bring forth some screen improvements such as 2,000 nit screen brightness, true 10 bit screen color please (not simulated), actual Ultra HD 4K or DCI 4K resolution screen to help focus with 8K source cameras. Sometimes I need to see the extra detail I'm getting from higher resolution shoots please. The 4 in one switching attachment needs to be capable of Ultra HD 4K, since 4K is considered a broadcast delivery format these days. All in all, I'm very satisfied with my Ninja V. The only advantage I can see justifying the V+ is 8K resolution capture from higher resolution cameras. 8K resolution capture is becoming more and more needful as we progress.

All good points. In many ways, you're sort of describing the large Neon monitor with a recorder on the back! (Not sure the Sumo screen is good enough for what you want?). I'm sure it's doable but it might be a while before it drops to my price point!
Great to have you back Paul! Your channel and personal feedback haas helped me in the past. I agree about the Ninja menu system - it continues to be a little intimidating for a novice like me. I would love you to do a series on effective ways of developing fundamental camera skills if you feel so inclined! I am especially interested in knowing what are the camera functions that are essential when shooting versus the superfluous.

Great intro to the V+ and HDR/RAW I'm looking at the xcast too, I might keep my ninja V for use on the xcast and add a V+ for pro work, it's just a pity the xcast only offers 1080 switching and recording, and only records the final output, whereas the Atem mini pro can record all inputs (although still in 1080)

@@extrashot Thx for your reply. HDR is live now :-)
My problem with HDR is simply the cost of changing everything on the computer side to work with it. Its still not worth it to me. I also find my Ninja V+ cooling fan to be annoyingly loud, so it doesn't get used much anyway. P.S. I always enjoy your videos and definitely noticed you were missing.... and I went looking. I actually wondered if the current KZread algorithm had made you invisible.... it seams to have a habit of doing that to smaller channels at the moment.

Hi Picturedmedia, I must admit that the purchase of an M1 MacBook with XDR screen at the end of last year has sorted the computer problems I was having with HDR. Even so, I still didn't think it was worth the hassle until I started playing with 12bit from the Ninja. Have you updated the software on your Ninja V+? I seem to remember there was an update a few months ago which gave us greater control over the fan speeds. Mine makes a loud noise when I turn it on but settles to pretty much silence after that. Mind you, I wasn't using it over the recent heat wave... might have been different that week !!!
@juliancroot
Жыл бұрын
@@extrashot yeah the M1 MacBook is good solution, I'm just not in a position to make any big purchases and I need to keep my current set up for audio production (which is becoming more of my primary activity anyway). Yeah I updated the v+ firmware a while back... I haven't found a fan speed control but now you've mentioned it I'll look for it. Thanks.
Hi mate, does is record 4k 120fps internally on the Sony A7S3?
I used to get a delay in the shogun inferno and could add a 4 frame delay to the audio within the settings which helped with the lag
@extrashot

I've just noticed that Gerald Undone also suggested a 2 frame delay on the Ninja with a Sony A7something...
I have an A7s 3 with the Ninja V, and I have tried everything, I use exactly this configuration of yours, and yet the file of the camera cards in S-log 3 come out with more dynamic range, more washed, less contrasted and saturated than the files recorded on the SSD inside the Ninja, could someone help me???!
What a great video! I just escribed myself no your Channel. Do you think it’s possible use this Atomos Ninja Plus In my old Sony A7 III ? Like that I can use until I get a new camera with 10bit. Átomos website doesn’t nave that specific information.

Yes you can (at least you can with the non-Plus version). And actually, if you record with the Ninja V, I am 95% certain you can actually record 422 compared to 420 interally. But I'd need to look that up tommorow if you're interested. And I'm still sure it will be still 8 bit unfortunately.

@@extrashot thanks! That is a shame, I do a lot of corporate interviews and use 4 cameras, I would love a set up that compact but be able to get an XML of the edit straight away...like the Atem
Great video. I think the biggest problem with using the ninja is the unbelievable latency on the HDMI out. So it’s really terrible when you are filming someone speaking and the lip synchronization. Very annoying and unusable for client monitoring. I mean of course when you send HDMI looping out of the ninja to another monitor, even wired there’s a delay. You put it on a Hollyland transmitter and it’s even worse.
@extrashot
Жыл бұрын
Hi Will, Good point with the HDMI loop. I get a 3 frame (at 25fps) delay, just on the HDMI output of my FX9... and that's always the same whatever I put on the end of the cable. Presumably, an HDMI loop will add at least another 3 frames, possibly 6 if the second monitor also has the same delay? My Hollyland 400S definitely adds another 3 so at this point, you're right, it would become notable even to clients!
@willvazquez3218
Жыл бұрын
@@extrashot I loved shooting RAW on the Ninja V with my A7SIII because of how much of a RED V-RAPTOR-like image it can render. However, I've had clients complain about the delay when monitoring and I stopped using it and just record internal. That's why I bought a Canon R5c, it has really amazing internal 8K RAW, so HDMI monitoring is acceptable. The only thing is that the R5c doesn't have the class-leading Sony AF, which makes life so much easier. Why must there always be a compromise? Haha.
@JamesChurchill
Жыл бұрын
Every camera adds a few frames of delay after sensor readout and before HDMI output, it's not added by the Ninja. If you're monitoring audio separately or listening live, then the result is absolutely guaranteed to be poor even if you were feeding the camera output direct to a dumb monitor. Providing an audio feed to the Ninja analog input and setting the frame delay correctly will result in a properly synced loop out. Alternatively feeding audio to the camera will ensure that the video and audio are locked together from the start and will remain so. (Of course, you must be monitoring the loop out audio for either approach to work.)
Change from 10bit to 8bit? I think I spotted one of the deliberate errors😄
@extrashot
Жыл бұрын
You did. 🥴
I ONLY shoot prores Raw on my FX3. Couldn't ask for more.
Looks like the video is not applying the SDR tonemap correctly, HDR looks as it should. SDR looks like LOG.
I'm a minimalist in everything in my life and I loathe even having a traditional looking prismed mirrorless, so I only shoot with Sony a6xxxx series. But I can't take the overheating and terrible 300nit screen and 30 minute video limit anymore, but buying another body just to address these issues is not what I want to do in spending $2,000 on a a7c. $500 makes far more sense. Yes a ninja adds size, but it flat and light... more than enough to save me $1500
There's one big caveat you forgot to mention when shooting HDR - it's only effective when shooting static shots.
@Oscarjankesmedia
Жыл бұрын
Why is that?
But you're not recording 12bit raw. The A7Siii can only record up to 10bit. You can wrap it in a 12, 14, 16bit package, but you're still only looking at 10bits of data. It's like saying you have 7 figures in the bank, but you're only adding zeros at the front (e.g. 0,100,00.00 does not equal 1,000,000).
@extrashot
Жыл бұрын
You're right that the A7Siii can only record 10bit... but it outputs 16bit linear RAW thought the HDMI. It's the Ninja V+ that converts this to 12bit for recording. It's actually easier for any camera to output with lower compression because that's less work for the camera to do internally. So I have 111,111,111,111 in the bank instead of 1,111,111,111 😁
