First of all. I find this to be amazing. When I was a kid I never thought I'd live to see real-time raytracing anytime in my life-time. Second, As a software engineer I was looking for artifacts/evidence that offers clues as to how the system works, and if you look closely at 2:36, check out the florescent lights hanging from the ceiling. Basically, what it appears that they are doing is rendering as many rays as they can handle in a short time period, then, with an incomplete, raytraced image (like if you went into blender and stopped rendering part way through), they're connecting the dots to fill in the gaps (the denoising step). At 2:36 you can see the noise artifacts flicker in the florescent light reflections as the card struggles to compute enough rays to make the scene smooth and perfect, resulting in random selection of samples. If you're contemplating buying a 2060 vs 2080, note that the number of rays that can be calculated per frame is going to vary among the cards. Also note that in future generations of this technology, this is certainly an area that they'll be striving to improve. Last, I would like to point out that you can actually run some of Microsoft's DXR demos on a non-RTX GPU and get 30fps at 1080p on a 1080ti (I've done this). However, they're promising 5-6x performance on an RTX GPU. The DXR demos, while showing amazing potential, and still pretty cool, are super simple.

I think this is difference between Ray Tracing and Path Tracing. Many people often use those terms lightly but in reality, those are two different rendering algorithms. Ray Tracing uses very low rays (compared to path tracing) emitted from light source and averages the light bounce (de noise) to create an image (basically Photoshop content aware fill but automatic and real time). Where as Path tracing is literally calculating each ray of light and filling the pixel with color which create more crisp and realistic light interaction in virtual world. Also I don't think Pre-baking is going away anytime soon. Ray tracing is like a helping tool, developers can't rely on ray tracing completely, at least not yet.

AAAH! I can't wait! That is beautiful! Can't wait for gameplay! Just a little request, can the game have a demo so I know if I like the gameplay before I spend money on it? I'm sure I will, but I'd like to be sure. Money is tight right now.

…yet dropped the amazing feature displayed in this clip, without ‘communicating’ a word about that to said ‘people’… The game’s amazing, don’t get me wrong - but I can’t help thinking it could shine to ‘Masterpiece’ level (which it’s beautifully-designed environments so properly deserve)

My machine is trying to burst into flame just watching this footage. Let alone trying to render it. Incredible tech! Can't wait to see it firsthand... After a dozen or so paychecks.

Explains ray tracing so well.

This can revolutionise the way we play fps. Looking for reflections across the walls for suspicious activity, enemies becoming aware of they spot something in the environment and reacting accordingly. Just imagine the way it will change AI and gameplay. Let's hope that the processing costs become low enough to be applied in mainstream

I can hear your computer catching fire

You never see the player character in the reflections. I wonder if that's intentional, like it would reveal too much of the story.

I wonder what gpu and cpu your going to need for this in 4k with ray tracing maxed?. I bet it's going to be the next new gen cards the 4090 might just do it but why didnt they put it all in when this game came out as the 4090 already exists. Unless even that card isn't ready for it with ambient occlusion ray-traced shadows, and reflections in its 4k maxed out. but still you could just turn them all off or switch some of them on if the settings allowed you do to that. but it does look fantastic see this i just wish i have the pc to play it looking at its very best maybe next year of gpu can do it
